RUMOR: BLADE Reboot Dead At Marvel Studios; Marhershala Ali Will Debut As The Daywalker In MIDNIGHT SONS

It seems Marvel Studios may have finally decided to pull the plug on the long-awaited Blade reboot, but we're hearing that Marhershala Ali will still get to play the character in Midnight Sons...

It's been seven years since Marvel Studios announced that Mahershala Ali was set to star as the titular vampire slayer in a new MCU Blade movie, and after numerous delays and setbacks, it seems the studio has given up on trying to bring the reboot to the screen.

We got the disappointing news that the project had been removed from Marvel's slate in 2024, but a report that the movie was only on indefinite hold followed, and we were led to believe that Blade had simply been delayed (again) and would eventually move forward.

However, during this week's episode of The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider said he's heard that the Blade reboot is now "dead," but the plan is for Ali to make his MCU debut as the character in the Midnight Sons movie.

Ali was asked about the status of the film while being interviewed on the red carpet of last year's Jurassic World Rebirth premiere, and while he made it clear that he is still more than willing to suit-up as the Daywalker, the ball is very much in the studio's court.

"Call Marvel," the actor said to Variety. "I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready."

Ali had a little more to say to THR: “I would love for Blade to happen; we’ll see, I don’t know where Marvel is at right now. I’m just looking for the next great part, I really am.”

Last we heard, the latest draft by Eric Pearson - who is the sixth writer to have been assigned to the project after Michael Green, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Beau DeMayo and Nic Pizzolatto - had "finally satisfied everyone involved," but clearly this wasn't the case.

Apparently, the real reason Blade was pushed back again is because Marvel is prioritizing Multiversal stories in the build-up to Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. So, it may not be a case of the studio struggling to "get Blade right," and simply bad timing for Ali's Daywalker to make his MCU debut.

There have also been rumors that the positive response to Wesley Snipes' appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine may have led to the studio switching gears and deciding to make the reboot a Multiverse story that could feature both takes on the Daywalker.

Whatever the case may be, Feige assured fans that Marvel is "committed" to seeing Blade to fruition shortly after the most recent delay.

“We are committed to Blade. We love the character. We love Mahershala’s take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You’re all up to date on what’s happening. But I can tell you that the character will indeed make it to the MCU."

It sounds like Feige will make good on his promise to bring Ali's Blade to the MCU, at least, and there's always a possibility that the character will eventually get his own solo movie after Midnight Sons.

@AgentofSH1ELD - Honest question; So, then should there never be another actor cast as Blade? EVER??
Ironically, some of the same folks protesting for T'Challa to be recast, because you know, the character is larger than the actor, don't seem to have that same energy for Blade. Puzzling.

@Empowered1 - Snipes is still around and Wolverine and Deadpool showed he can still do the job. If Snipes passed or quit, it'd be a different story.

@AgentofSH1ELD - Watched it at the theater and thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, Snipes appearance was not the surprise for me that it was for others due to the fact that he was rumored to be appearing months before the movie was released. But I digress, it doesn't remotely answer my question, which was, should the character of Blade NEVER be recast? Since people seem to think no one else should play him. Obviously, Snipes is still around and popular, but he's also in his 60's. The purpose of recasting Blade is so that the character can be around for another 10-15 years in the MCU. Love Wesley, but I don't want to see a 70yr old Blade on screen. And if YOU watched DP&W you can clearly tell that his age is showing NOW. IJS

@HashTagSwagg - I honestly get the "he's still around" part, it's just that the purpose of recasting the character now is so that he will be able to portray him for the next 10+ years in the MCU. He's 63 TODAY, and it shows, he looked scrawny in DP&W. By the time he would shoot a new Blade movie he's likely to be 65+. He himself gave Mahershala his blessing on getting the role. Sometimes, it's ok to move on.

Blade and Ghost Rider are among many characters that I absolutely love in a crossover but have zero interest in seeing solo. This is fine if true.

@SummersEssex - Ghost Rider absolutely deserves a solo outing. He has way more lore and villains to work with than Blade.

@SummersEssex - Same. I think we got some good solo material from Cage and Snipes, but I don’t really want to see a rebooted solo outing for them.

If we are gonna stick with Hugh Jackman, why tf can’t we keep the GOAT Wesley Snipes? 😡

Honestly , I wouldn’t be surprised if this is indeed the case and think it might be for the best…

You wouldn’t have try to do something different & fresh to an extent since it wouldn’t be another Blade movie but just a team up film in which Blade could be assembling a team to deal with a threat that he can’t do so alone.

Hell , it would make a natural continuation imo from the Eternals post credits scene where he recruits Dane in that perhaps his Ebony Blade is tied to Dracula who has returned and wants his weapon back to rule the world & such.

Anyway regardless if its Blade or Midnight Sons , I just hope we finally see Mahershala Ali in the role since he’s a great choice for the character!!.

I’m not so sure of the legitimacy of this rumor. You can’t get a Blade movie off the ground but an ensemble cast movie with vastly different main characters is all but “greenlit”?
The easiest thing to do regarding Blade is to just hold off until the inevitable MCU reboot. Keep Snipes Blade in Secret Wars(if the character is in the script) and raise the stakes on the heroes. He’ll be a character whose future isn’t promised, like McGuire’s Spider-man.

@WruceBayne - true

At this point the last rumor i had heard was that they were happy with the script but were waiting for SW to soft reboot to better integrate vampires into the MCU which makes sense imo.

@TheVisionary25 - well, hopefully that’s what the plan is for the Daywalker.
