Marvel VS DC....Who's Winning?

Marvel VS DC....Who's Winning?

Who won this and who won that. My views on the fan feud based on comics, films, animation, and games.

Editorial Opinion

First off, I'll admit that the idea for this editorial was derived from the ruckus over Marvel's The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, though it has seemed to have slowed to a crawl. Also, I have read "Marvel's winning..." this and "DC's winning..." that in the comments section of various articles far too often. There are so many mixed feelings and bias opinions of both. But, who is in fact "winning"? In the following I will break down my thoughts on the Marvel VS DC fan-based feud from what I know about the films, animation, games, and comics. Then, I will determined the "winner".

FILM - Both DC and Marvel have a flawed past whe it comes to films. The likes of the Superman sequals, Batman & Robin, Batman Forever, Supergirl, and most recently Green Lantern come to mind for DC, while for Marvel we have X3, Hulk (Ang Lee's), the FF movies, Ghost Rider, Wolverine: Origins, Daredevil, and Elektra. So, yes, they both have some mediocre (being nice) films. They have also both produced excellent films we all (mostly) love. Superman, Batman, Batman Returns, X-Men (1, 2, & First Class), Iron Man, Captain America, The Avengers, Thor, The Nolan Batman Trilogy (BB, TDK, & TDKR), and The Amazing Spider-Man. While at it, The Avengers and TDKR both did exceptionally well and were well received. They are fantastic in their own ways and I really don't think are even that comparable. Back to topic, the future releases for both companies look exciting as well (granted Marvel is producing more, but not only did they go a route that demands it, they have other companies making their movies as well were as DC has only Warner Bros). With that said, I'd have to say they are even. I can't see a distinctive winner. Conclusion...TIE.

ANIMATION - Once again, the past offers a mix of positive and negative attempts. I'll stick with the positive for this one. Marvel has done well with the animated series of X-Men & Spider-Man, then theres The Spectacular Spider-Man, FF: The World's Greatest Heroes (I liked it anyway), Wolverine and the X-Men, and most recently The Avengers: Earths Greatest Heroes. DC has animated series of Batman, Superman, and the Justice League, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Green Lantern TAS, and my current fav Young Justice. However, their future line ups don't look as promising. Although Ultimate Spider-Man is doing well (the older fans aren't liking it as much) and with GL TAS and Young Justice not returning, we don't have much to look forward to. DC will give us the likes of Beware of the Batman and Teen Titans GO, wich both look to be aimed toward a younger crowd, and Marvel has Hulk and the Agents of SMASH, and Avengers Assemble. I do have high hopes for AA, but feel I will be let down. It is also worth noting that both have produced animated movies that I thought were all pretty damn good. So, who wins this category? I feel that with the shows we will soon have to watch, neither...another TIE.

GAMES - I'm not going into alot of detail here. This really just depends on your taste in games. Recently it could be heavily debated that DC is winning with its Batman Arkham games. However, I feel the Captain America game is actually pretty similar. Marvel has put out more games, but like I said, the Batman Arkham games have sorta set the standard for super hero style games. When you think about Arkham, also remember Ultimate Alliance, Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions, and the Movie games (spidey and cap mainly). Also I am really looking forward to releases from both (Deadpool and Injustice). I want to say this one is a TIE as well.

COMICS - Here, I will go into even less detail. Both are amazing. DC has givin us Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Lobo, Green Lantern, Flash, etc... Marvel has brought us Hulk, X-Men, Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, etc... I am an avid fan of both. As for the current runs, I'd say both are lacking. While I have enjoyed the Death of the Family story (up til the end atleast) and some others (Suicide Squad, etc...) from DC and from Marvel I like the Thunderbolts, Uncanny Avengers and All-New X-Men, both DC's new 52 and Marvel's Marvel NOW have disappointed. Therefore, I will give this one a TIE as well.

They have both done extremely well and they have both made mistakes. So, to conclude (in my opinions), Marvel and DC are both WINNING. Comic books and comic book movies have never been so popular. It is actually COOL to be a comic nerd. No losers here.

it's fun to fight about it. we SHOULD fight about it. Nothing wrong with staying loyal to your chosen team.

Me and my friend constantly babble on about Marvel vs DC. We both love Marvel, but we always decide Superman wins. in every scenario, ever. Just mention the word Superman and the fights already over.

I like that the Avengers don't have an all-powerful guy on the team. Thor's mighty, but mighty dim too. Though Hyperion/Captain Universe may change that going forward.

Comics. Pre new 52 i was reading more DC than Marvel. But since the new 52 Marvel have been putting out a lot better books than DC IMO. Marvel wins this one.

Animation. DC wins this one hands down. Marvel have had they're fair share of excellent shows i.e. Spectacular Spider-Man, 90's spider-man and x-men, Wolverine and the x-men and Avengers: EMH. But Marvel do have they're awful shows as well. Spider-man unlimited, MTV Spider-man, the first season of 90's iron man and Ultimate spider-man alone gives DC a huge advantage. DC's great shows are batman TAS, Superman TAS, the 2 Justice League shows, young justice and Green lantern TAS. And if you bring animated movies into account DC destroys them completely. Point to DC.

Video Games. This one is an odd one, because while DC have hands down the 2 best superhero games ever made in the batman arkham games, they don't have anything after that though, and they have easily the worst superhero game ever in superman 64. While marvel have had they're fair share of poor games (iron man 1&2 and thor god of thunder), they've also got quite a few if not great really fun games as well i.e. spider-man ps1 (great for its time and i have huge nostalgia for it), spider-man 1&2 movie games, ultimate spider-man, spider-man shattered dimensions, x-men legends 1&2, x-men origins wolverine uncaged edition, incredible hulk ultimate destruction and marvel ultimate alliance. I'd have to give this one a tie.

Movies. Marvel easily win this, DC have only gotten 3 of they're main DC heroes onto the big screen in batman, superman and green lantern. Batman has got 89 and the dark knight trilogy, superman has got 2 good movies out of 5 and green lantern is one of the worst CBMs ever made. So that's 6 good movies out of 12 movies based on main DC heroes. While Marvel have been dominating the big screen since x-men and will do so until at least avengers 2. Not to say that marvel have not had they're bad movies i.e. X-men 3, wolverine origins, spider-man 3, blade 3, Fantastic four 1&2, both ghost rider movies, all 3 punisher movies and ang lee's hulk although i don't like that movie for different reasons to everyone else. Bu they also have some of the best CBMs ever made in spider-man 1&2, x-men 2 and first class, iron man, the avengers and blade 2. They've also had others movies that while not great are still good movies i.e. thor, cap, x-men 1, the incredible hulk and blade 1. point goes to Marvel.

@SpiderGuy94, For me it was the exact opposite with comics. I picked up a lot of DC as a result of Blackest Night and the New 52. Marvel has pretty much been falling off the radar for me since Fear Itself and even more recently with AvX and Marvel NOW!. I pretty much only read the Ultimate line, Hawkeye, and Venom.

Movies... If you look at it from what's happening now, Marvel easily wins. WB and DC are essentially putting out 1 hit wonders while Marvel is investing in the future. Marvel has Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, Thor 2, Avengers 2, and Ant Man all to come out with in the next 3 years. That's not counting X-Men First Class, Amazing Spider man, The Wolverine, etc...

DC has Man of Steel and that's it. There's literally nothing else. Nothing else is in development. You can't use the Quality over Quantity debate because chances are that most if not all of Marvel's movies will be quality. Nolan's Trilogy is extremely high quality and Man of Steel will probably be the same. However, I'd argue that movies with an A- rating beats 4 with an A+...

Animation, WB and DC wins hands down. In terms of quality of story and quality of animation. WB has a history of putting out quality animation. Marvel had X-men, Wolverine and the X-men, Spectacular Spider Man, and Avengers. Features wise the only good ones in my opinion were Thor, Hulk vs, and Next Avengers. WB has given us not only the mentioned tv shows, but in terms of features, they gave us all those Justice League New Frontier, Dark Knight Returns, Batman Mask of the Phantasm, Under the Red Hood, Wonder Woman, Superman Batman Apocalypse, Public Enemies, Justice League Doom, etc... How can you say this is a tie?

Actually forgot to add Winter Soldier to that comics list for Marvel, but yeah... Marvel's comics are making me less interested these days.

@randomality85 that's your opinion i'm enjoying more marvel titles than DC titles but that's just my opinion, You think DC are putting out better books and I can't say your wrong, I may disagree with it but I can't say your wrong. Clearly you didn't read what I said about animation, I said DC wins hands down and they especially destroy marvel in the animated features. I give the video games a tie. I also said marvel kills DC in the movies as well.

@Spideyguy94,

Sorry, I really more meant the comics portion of your argument. Everything else is pretty much an agreement. I kinda put that part in last. Should've clarified, my mistake.

Spideyguy94 - 2/14/2013, 7:10 AM
@randomality85 don't worry man we all make mistakes. Yeah the comics I think are more down to taste and what you enjoy. For me I've been really enjoying batman, ultimate spider-man, all new x-men, daredevil and quite a few others but they are my 4 favourite books on the stands at the moment.

animation dc but marvel have some good shows as well.

comics tie both have good & bad titles.

games tie takeaway the two arkham games dc has nothing.

movies marvel no competition at all,two good batman films & watchmen isn't enough to rival marvel.
ToTheManInTheColdSweat
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 2/14/2013, 8:40 AM

for me:
games - dc
animation - dc
comics - none but animal man & swamp thing are awesome.
movies - marvel & dc

marvel stepped it's game up recently, when i was a small lil runt, dc was the only one bringing the goods (marvel only had the [frick]ing awesome incredible hulk, the rest were utter shit - the crappy 1970s dr strange, blow-your-brains-out captain america, cheesy nick fury & shitty fantastic four), so i can't diss them (DC) now when they are struggling.

but who wins? we the fans ^_^
good article

You know as well as i do that
Animation is Dc
Games is Dc
Movies marvel but i tell you know if MOS does as it promises to do and sets up Dc universe then marvel will struggle to hang on to this.

Movies: Marvel. However, DC has a few good movies. The Dark Knight Trilogy, Superman: The Movie, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Watchmen, Batman, and Man of Steel is shaping up to be a decent flick.
TV: DC. They have Smallville, Lois & Clark, 60's Batman, Arrow...all Marvel has is 70's Hulk which was awesome.
Animation: DC again. All Marvel has is Spectacular Spider-Man
Games: TIE. Both have great games, and both have crap games.
Comics: Depends on when you ask...
bazinga85
bazinga85 - 2/14/2013, 5:53 PM
Movie: Overall, I'd say marvel. TDK is the best CB movie of all time, no question about that.
Animation: DC, no contest
Games:DC. The arkham series gives them the edge on that one.
Comics: I agree with @SUPERGUY15. It depends on when you ask, but at the moment I'd say DC because of Snyder's batman.

You'll notice a trend in my picks. Batman. He is the only reason DC is even comparable to marvel in movies(I'm expecting MOS to change that). B:TAS is one of, if not the best cartoon of all time, and Batman:Under the Red Hood is the best CB animated movie ever, IMO. And like I said before, the arkham games are the best CB games ever, and Snyder is killing it with his Batman series. That is why Batman is the best CB hero of all time :P

Simple answer to "who's winning?" : WE ARE.
xcrementus

@Kenjim; Superman throws Juggernaught into the sun. Superman wins lol.

scenario B) Superman rips off Juggernaughts mask, freeze breaths him, waits for a telepath to turn him into a gimp. Superman wins.

scenario c) Superman summons Cyttorak, throws Cyttorak into the sun. Superman wins.

See? the title of the new Superman movie really should be Man Who Wins.

Example script...

VILLAIN: "here Superman, i have some Kryptonite, what are you gonna do now?"....
SUPERMAN: says nothing. throws him and the kryptonite into the sun. Superman wins.

Well, I don't really have a brand loyalty. I'll read anything with good story and cool characters. And in my opinion, Marvel just has a few more of those than DC. Yeah, DC has some great ones like Superman, Green Arrow and Batman are my favorite comics to read from DC. Even Aquaman is pretty cool now.

Comics-personally I think Marvel has always had cooler characters, that and the fact that the whole universe has a feeling one-ness and it really ties everything together. I mean like does Batman ever come across Wonder Woman in one of his everyday comics? No, it only happens during a specific crosssover or justice league comic. Whereas in Marvel, Spider-Man and Daredevil are two different heroes that run into each other in their everyday lives....it's just things like that, that make the universe feel like on big universe. Whereas in DC, when you're reading you feel as if each hero is in their own separate universe, it's not that way but that's what it feels like. Marvel does a much better job of keeping the universe feeling tied together.

Animation-DC hands down...

Movies-Marvel hands down...

Video games-tie...

Marvel has one more than just spectacular Spider-Man, you're forgetting Avengers: EMH, that was a great show it's one of the few. It sucks that it was canceled.
