DC Studios Boss Talks The Brave And The Bold, Justice League, And Confirms Gorilla Grodd HBO Series

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has shared updates on The Brave and the Bold and Justice League, and confirms that the planned Jimmy Olsen TV series will, in fact, revolve around Grodd.

With James Gunn hard at work on shooting his Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, his fellow DC Studios co-CEO, Peter Safran, is doing the rounds to hype up Supergirl ahead of its release on June 26.

It's been a while since we've had a slate update from the studio, with what's heading our way beyond 2027 currently something of a mystery. That's in no small part because so many of the projects revealed at the start of 2023 have fallen by the wayside (The Authority and Swamp Thing, for example).

Gunn has hinted at his endgame for "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters," but will the Justice Gang eventually become the Justice League?

During a recent red carpet interview, the executive was asked about the possibility of a Justice League movie and replied, "We know eventually, you head in that direction." However, for now, "We really are just talking about those movies that we've announced and those projects we've announced."

Still, Safran had one eye on the future and promised, "You know we're going to do The Brave and the Bold, which brings Batman into the DCU. We've talked about the Gorilla Grodd show for HBO that we'll start shooting this year. That's big news, by the way. I probably shouldn't have said that."

The DC Studios boss is referring to the Jimmy Olsen TV series, which, based on these remarks, is a Grodd series with The Daily Planet photographer in a supporting role. Grodd is one of The Flash's villains, but it seems the Scarlet Speedster will remain on the shelf after his poorly received 2023 movie.

Whether this will air on HBO or HBO Max remains to be seen, despite Safran referring to the former. A series about a massive CG ape with psychic powers doesn't seem like a good fit for the premium cable network, but we'll see.

Later, Safran said that he and Gunn will talk about the DCU's future when the time is right, adding that they need to prioritise delivering the best script and story possible. However, there's no rush, and Safran believes having a "creative visionary" like Gunn on hand is DC Studios' biggest "advantage."

You can hear more from Safran in the player below.

Interesting that he calls it a Gorilla Grodd show rather then a Jimmy Olsen one , wonder if there’s any significance to that or him just mis-speaking?.

Anyway with it apparently shooting this year , I’m assuming we will get it sometime next year which would make sense but we’ll see.

Also I really hope the Brave & the Bold happens sooner then later!!.

@TheVisionary25 - I think I recall Gunn saying the Jimmy Olsen show would focus on some of the DCU's lesser known villains, and he gave Grodd as an example. So, maybe that's all Safran knows about it?

If Brave & the Bold is still happening...we have to get some more Bat-Family characters right? Oracle. Nightwing.

@BlackStar25 - when the movie was announced , they said it would introduce the Bat-Family aswell if I’m not mistaken though didn’t indicate who that would be so likely might include Alfred ,Nightwing & Barbara at the least.

@BlackStar25 - I still like Maya Hawke for Batgirl, with her dad as Gordon.

@TheVisionary25 - two movies and a tv show each year is a good amount of content. Wouldn't be surprised if they add another tv show or animated movie to the slate though

@bkmeijer1 - another tv show seems likely.

The swamp thing movie is still happening, it’s just in a weird situation where James Mangold is stuck in between doing this and the dawn of the Jedi order film

I wonder how many chances Gunn and Safran will be given 🤔

Superman didnt hit a billion and underperformed, supergirl looks like it may not even break even, clayface could be a sleeper hit but we never know. If MOT doesn't hit a billion, will they continue to push forward?

I doubt they can reboot again.

🤔🤔🤔

@SenorTwats - Man of Tomorrow doesn't need to make a billion; it needs to make enough to show a clear upward trajectory for the franchise. If Superman made a little over $600 million, then MOT will need to hit the $800 million mark to show the executives this franchise can clearly grow.

@TheJok3r - Wonder if the executives really think like that... and not like "why are we unable to crack 1 billion with what's arguably our most important character besides Batman?" "if not even Superman can bring in the money should we even keep investing on the rest?" You might be a bit too optimistic
SenorTwats
SenorTwats - 6/15/2026, 9:16 AM
@TheJok3r - i dont know about that one, it all depends on the budgets. If MOT cost more than Superman then WB will expect a bigger return than 800 million. Look at MOS compared to BVS. BVS was more expensive and was expected to make more when it failed to do so WB came in to chop up SS & JL to apease the marvel audience in hope to replicate Marvel's success.

Its all about the bottom line 👀

TheJok3r - 6/15/2026, 9:16 AM
@Urubrodi - If Man of Tomorrow manages to make over $800 million, then the question shifts from "why can't other characters make a billion" to "why can't other characters make a billion just as fast". Man of Tomorrow having a clear increase from Superman means that a third movie is very likely to make a billion, so they will be on the right track. If MOT however makes less than $800 million while Batman II makes a billion or more, then Gunn will have a far harder time getting executives on his side moving forward.

@SenorTwats - This is a Hollywood issue, not a Superman one. A first movie in a new series that's able to make over $600 million shows interest in the property; it being non-profitable shows a clear problem in how the studio handles its finances that goes beyond that individual property. These studios should be competing over who can produce movies for less, not more. Avatar Fire and Ash is another example; it "under performed" despite making nearly $1.5 billion. That's a Disney financial department problem, not a franchise problem.

@Urubrodi - No kidding. I had hopes for the DCU when Gunn took over but since the Superman film and seeing what he's producing thus far and in the future, none of it makes sense to most DC fans I don't think and he certainly isn't giving fans what they want. It's almost like a big Gunn vanity project with DC characters filmed in the frame of GOTG. I know, what were we thinking would happen?

Whats next on the list for Gunn’s DCU? The Flash, WonderWoman, and/or Aquaman??? Nope.
Gorilla Grodd and maybe in the next ten years we’ll get mid life crisis Batman.
