Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves might have stumbled at the box office back in March 2023, but it has quietly built a massive fanbase on home video and streaming.
The general consensus is that the fantasy film taking home only $209 million on a $150 million budget doesn't reflect just how good the movie was, as critics absolutely loved it, handing out a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to the pic's sharp humor, inventive magic, and incredible cast dynamic.
While fans have been begging for a sequel (even if it lands straight on streaming), the directorial duo of John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein recently dropped a promising update; namely that Hasbro is still determined to make D&D 2 happen, even if they have to shop it to a different studio.
Goldenstein told The Playlist, "I think Hasbro is a big believer in it, and if they can figure out a studio partner to make it work, they’ll want to proceed. As are our producers."
Daley chimed in, "I mean, look, it’s something that is near and dear to our hearts in that we loved making the first one. We fell in love with the characters, and there’s so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn’t filled with exposition or introduction to this family that we’ve already become accustomed to. So you can kind of launch right into the story, which is really nice.”
He also commented on the financial challenges, stating, "Yes, there are practical realities with the finance contingent, and who knows if it ever gets made, but we were proud of the sequel script and hope that at some point it does find a path."
