Marvel Studios' untitled X-Men reboot has started assembling its cast, but the team definitely feels incomplete. Beast is still expected to join Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, and Storm, but will that be it?
When the X-Men debuted, it was with a five-person team. Rogue and Storm weren't part of the lineup; instead, we had Angel and Iceman. With that in mind, perhaps we should expect only one more addition to the ensemble before cameras start rolling.
The X-Men will be led by Professor X, while Mister Sinister and Emma Frost are expected to be the primary antagonists (there is, however, a chance the latter is allied with the mutant heroes). As for Magneto, we've heard conflicting reports about whether the Master of Magnetism will be included in this fresh start for the franchise.
Plus, with Rogue in the mix, many fans hope that Gambit won't be too far behind. Well, while it could happen down the line, it doesn't sound like it's in the works quite yet.
According to Knight Edge Media's Caleb Williams, neither Magneto nor Gambit will appear in Marvel Studios' X-Men. This will disappoint some fans, but it's not hugely surprising.
Magneto was the big bad in nearly every 20th Century Fox X-Men movie, while Gambit has recently been front and centre in Deadpool & Wolverine and this December's Avengers: Doomsday. Letting both characters rest for a while could be what's best for them.
While he wasn't mentioned by Williams, Wolverine is also expected to be absent from the reboot.
"One of the great things about the comics is [that] there is such a rich and broad history," Schreier recently said. "That was one of the first things that Kevin and I talked about when I came in; they made many great movies in this world, and they've made so many great things. Let's find the things that haven't recently been done well. All these other corners of the universe."
The filmmaker continued, "Digging back into those comics like 20 years, the whole Chris Claremont run, the newer Jonathan Hickman stuff. There are so many stories that are still untold, to honor and to reach into, and then to meet this cast and try to do something new, I think you always want to see something that reveres where it came from and then is still taking a new spin on where we want to go."
Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, and Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm.
Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) also stars as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who plays Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of Mister Sinister in the comics.
X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028.
