Alfonso Cuarón's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is widely considered the strongest entry in the Wizarding World franchise. Understandably, fans were both surprised and disappointed when the acclaimed filmmaker decided not to return for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
However, producer David Heyman has now revealed why he was one-and-done with the film series.
Heyman, who produced all eight movies in the Daniel Radcliffe-led franchise and is now executive producing HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series, reflected on Cuarón's departure during the latest episode of Harry Potter: The Official Film Podcast.
According to the veteran producer, the director was exhausted after bringing Prisoner of Azkaban to the big screen. When asked about returning for the fourth movie, Cuarón apparently made his feelings very clear.
"We asked Alfonso if he wanted to do the fourth, and he said, 'Cabrón,'" Heyman recalled (via SFFGazette.com). "I think he was exhausted. I look at pictures of Alfonso from then – Alfonso is one of my best friends, and he's my son’s godfather, and I love him. But I look at him from then, and I just look [at him]... Because he was exhausted."
That was a very different experience from the one Heyman remembers having with Chris Columbus, who directed the first two movies, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
"Chris looked like a kid. He was unbelievable," he said. "Alfonso, there was nothing left on the table. He said no." However, Columbus also decided against continuing with the franchise after Chamber of Secrets, though his reasons were a little different. Heyman explained that the filmmaker "wanted to take his family back to America."
"Chris Columbus would fly back to San Francisco every weekend during prep. He would leave on a Friday night, and he'd fly Sunday to be back first thing Monday because he felt it was so important that he saw his family and that he wasn’t away," Heyman noted. "They then moved over. But it was during school, and they had to finish the school year."
Heyman remains hugely appreciative of what Columbus brought to the franchise, crediting him with essentially establishing the cinematic version of the Wizarding World and creating the atmosphere that would carry through the remaining films.
Cuarón, meanwhile, eventually passed the reins to Mike Newell, who had the unenviable task of adapting The Goblet of Fire. He didn't have an easier time, as Heyman revealed that Newell was "absolutely shattered" by the end of production, highlighting just how demanding it was to bring J.K. Rowling's increasingly ambitious stories to the big screen.
There have already been some hints that the TV series isn't proving any easier to wrangle. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Jon Brown, a writer on Season 1, has been promoted to co-showrunner on Season 2. He joins Francesca Gardiner, who was the sole showrunner on The Philosopher's Stone.
