The Odyssey: No God Nor Cyclops Can Stop Matt Damon In Epic New Trailer For Christopher Nolan Blockbuster

Christopher Nolan has launched a brand new theatrical trailer for his upcoming epic blockbuster, The Odyssey, offering fresh footage of the cyclops, the war, Charlize Theron, and an evil Robert Pattinson!

Following Christopher Nolan’s appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Universal Pictures has debuted an epic new theatrical trailer for The Odyssey, offering a jaw-dropping look at one of the year's most anticipated blockbusters.

The new footage provides a stunning extended preview of the July release, including fresh glimpses of the massive Cyclops, warring giants, a villainous Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and a first look at Charlize Theron as the alluring Calypso. Naturally, the trailer also features plenty of action shots of leading man Matt Damon, whose character traverses heaven and earth to reunite with his wife and son.

With an estimated budget of $250 million, the project is the most expensive feature of Nolan’s career and his first to be shot entirely with IMAX 70mm film cameras. Tickets for these IMAX 70mm premium screenings officially went on sale last year, with most selling out within 12 hours. Many box office pundits believe The Odyssey could potentially become Nolan’s highest-grossing title ever, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises ($1.115 billion).

Universal has also secured an exclusive four-week IMAX window for the film, meaning it will be the sole attraction on those premium large format screens from July 16 through August 14. While this is great news for cinema fans, the exclusivity will keep Spider-Man: Brand New Day out of domestic IMAX screens unless Sony is able secure another date later in the year.

The film features a massive ensemble cast, headlined by Academy Award-winner Matt Damon, with a supporting cast featuring Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Corey Hawkins, Nick E. Tarabay, Maurice Compte, Michael Vlamis, Iddo Goldberg, Josh Stewart, Ryan Hurst, Anthony Molinari, Jovan Adepo, Logan Marshall-Green, James Remar, Travis Scott, Sean Avery, and Ian Casselberry.

The Odyssey hits theaters on July 17!

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

The Odyssey is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan for their company, Syncopy. The executive producer is Thomas Hayslip.

@Matchesz - came here to see if that bugged anyone else.. maybe just me but that really took me out of the epic mindset, and into the Odyssey stage production lol.. not quite there but still

@Matchesz - Totally took me out of it. If that's the type of dialogue we can expect, it's a pass.

@Matchesz - That and “Let’s go!” It’ll definitely take some getting used to, but I do think the commitment to not using lofty language or accents is an interesting one.

@MarioT1000 - Yeah, it's all moderny language, kinda unusual for these types of films but I can deal with it. If it's not people talking ancient Greek or Greek accents, sure

Looks spectacular. Huge fan of Homer’s epic and the scale for this looks crazy. The IMAX preview made the siege of Troy feel so [frick]ing tense, can’t wait to see what the Cyclops segment feels like. Pattinson looks great as always but… have some concerns on Holland - line delivery felt a little stiff. Would be a shame if he phoned this in, since he’s pretty great Telemachus casting on paper

@BeyondtheFuture - horrible. Hathaway overacting. Spiderman doing his best to look like a real actor. Bernthal growling. Damon being Damon. [frick]ing Charlize Theron chillin out.

It feels like one of Ridley Scott's bad movies.

This will be epic.

If he nails every aspect of one of the most fantastic tales of all time, he will be crowned the greatest of all time.

I believe this man can fly.

The cyclops looks cgi, I was hoping for photo realism ...which Christopher Nolan is quite good at, sadly he seems to have fallen into the pg13 friendly video-gamey looking monster trap...very disappointing
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 5/5/2026, 9:47 AM
@emeraldtaurus - It was a practical puppet though??
Irregular
Irregular - 5/5/2026, 10:15 AM
@emeraldtaurus - Some of it is obvious CGI but there is something "authentic" that the CGI is mapped over. The end shot when the soldier is grabbed by the Cyclops is obviously of the puppet being used.

HOWEVER...

This is just a guess since it was never confirmed by Nolan or anyone else that the Cyclops is indeed an animatronic puppet. And can't find any source that confirms this to be the case.

@Irregular - was really excited as I was convinced C Nolan was gonna do everything practical. Or something akin to the Ice giants in Thor 1.

@emeraldtaurus - I mean I'm assuming they will make one of the featurettes for Odyssey, will be about the Cyclops. So time will tell how he did achieve it.

Writing looks bad, lol at "dad". I didnt expect them to come up with greek accents but british english just lends itself better to an epic that takes place on the old continent. Costumes are rings of power level plasticky mess. I know nolan is colorblind, but it seems everyone else working on this is too. Shot composition is nice, i guess.

I'm hyped for this. An epic of this magnitude helmed by Nolan... Gotta be awesome.

Minor gripes are some casting choices, like @BeyondtheFuture said. The other (kinda related) is the heavy american accent of some. Somehow just doesn't fit the theme IMO.

Here's hoping. It has potential.
THEKENDOMAN
THEKENDOMAN - 5/5/2026, 5:29 AM
Oh, for [frick]’s sake… now THIS is [frick]ing cinema.

Nolan casually drops a $250M mythological epic shot entirely on IMAX 70mm, sells out premium screenings in 12 hours, locks a 4-week IMAX window… and people still act like the man’s not operating on a [frick]ing different level.

Matt Damon leading, Pattinson going full villain, Cyclops, war, scale… this isn’t “content,” this is proper big-screen [frick]ing filmmaking.

And here’s the funny part, this is exactly why DC taking its time matters. When you build properly, you get events like this… not conveyor belt [frick]ing noise.

Respect where it’s due.

This movie have to be success. So there would be more like this. It was a shame, that Gladiator 2 and Northman flopped.
