Happy HALLOWEEN! Ranking all 13 Movies In The Iconic Horror Franchise From Carpenter's Classic To ENDS

Today is Halloween, and as the trick-or-treaters don their costumes and the spirits prepare to reclaim the night, why not check out our ranking of all 13 movies in the classic slasher franchise...

“I met this six-year-old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and the blackest eyes... the devil's eyes."

Today is All Hallows' Eve, and to mark the occasion, we're taking a look back at one of the most popular and iconic horror franchises of all time.

Though we're sure Michael Myers will return at some point (there's been talk of a small-screen reboot), 2022's Halloween Ends was marketed as the conclusion of the long-running film series. So, to celebrate the spooky season, we're ranking all 13 entries from worst to best.

Though Halloween 2018 (wisely?) ignored all but Carpenter's classic, there actually were a few bright spots among the various sequels, reboots and re-imaginings over the years - including one instalment that didn't even feature "The Boogeyman."

Let's start with the absolute worst of the worst.

Halloween: Resurrection

Quite a few of the movies on this list have at least some redeeming qualities, but it's hard to think of any positives when it comes to the eighth instalment in the Halloween franchise, Resurrection.

Even setting aside how badly made, written and acted it is, the film kills off Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) within the first few minutes (at Curtis' request), and then hilariously attempts to bring Myers into the modern age by making his childhood home the setting for a live internet horror show.

That fact that Busta Rhymes roundhouse kicking Michael Myers in the head is the most memorable thing about this nonsense says it all.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers

Looked at as a guilty pleasure by some fans, Halloween 6 is far too messy and incoherent to score a higher place on this list. A Producer's Cut of the movie was released back in 2014, but that did little to restore any sense to the plot, which introduces an ancient Celtic curse as the driving force behind Myers' relentless rampages.

Notable only for Donald Pleasence's final turn as Dr. Loomis before he died during production and a very young Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle, The Curse of Michael Myers isn't even bloody or violent enough to satisfy the gorehounds..

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers

Honestly, there wasn't much between this and Curse, but at least Halloween 5 had the sense to bring Danielle Harris back as Jamie - even if they do make her mute for most of the running time.

The Revenge of Michael Myers is just a bonkers movie... and not in a good way. From slapstick cops with comedic music to a batshit crazy Loomis and a mysterious Man in Black busting Myers out of prison, this succeeds in undoing everything that was good about the largely underrated Halloween 4.

Oh yeah, and at one point, Michael Myers, aka The Shape, aka evil on two legs, weeps.

H2: Halloween II (2009)

Halloween II (2009) Review

For many, Rob Zombie's second Halloween movie was a vast improvement over the first, but while there are a few kernels of interesting ideas splattered around with the bloodshed, it falls short for several reasons.

The filmmaker ups the gore quota and does at least attempt to delve deeper into the fractured psyche of both Michael and his sister, Laurie, but the ham-fisted dialogue and rather silly imagery bog the movie down to the point that it becomes little more than a brutally violent slog.

Zombie also cynically commits character assassination on Samuel Loomis, who was depicted as a far more selfless and heroic figure in the previous movie.

Halloween (2007)

Stream Halloween (2007) Online | Download and Watch HD Movies | Stan

Rob Zombie probably shouldn't have gone near Halloween, but he did, and the results were... nowhere near as bad as they could have been.

Granted, the monumentally ill-advised decision to give Michael Myers a backstory complete with Zombie's trademark depravity and woefully unsubtle scumbag characters plays out about as tediously as you'd imagine, but once little Mikey grows up and Laurie Strode (a very impressive Taylor Scout Compton) is introduced, it becomes a pretty effective - if still completely pointless - remake with several memorable slasher scares and brutal kills.

Halloween Kills

Halloween Kills': Venice Review | Reviews | Screen

Halloween Kills proved to be highly divisive, and it's easy to see why. Though the movie does feature some downright twisted kills and strong performances from Curtis, Greer and Matichak, it ends up having more in common with the sequels on this list that have now been ret-conned out of existence than the iconic original.

Kills has its moments, and manages to showcase the sheer brutality of Michael Myers before his inevitable final confrontation with Laurie Strode in Ends, but the subplot involving Tommy Doyle, Lindsey Wallace and their support group attempting to hunt down their Boogeyman is laughably mishandled ("evil dies tonight!").

Not the disaster some paint it as, but Kills does have to be considered a disappointing instalment after the promise of David Gordon Green's first film.

Halloween Ends

Halloween Ends' Review: The Horror Series Ends (Rinse, Slash, Repeat)

Some of you will no doubt be shocked to see Halloween Ends ranked so high, but despite the many missteps David Gordon Green and his fellow writers make with this final chapter in the revival trilogy, the fact that they at least made some attempt to subvert expectation and try something a little different does go a long way - even if the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

The decision to sideline Myers and focus on a new killer, Corey Cunningham, resulted in a lot of people writing the movie off before giving it a proper chance, but the idea does work to some extent - although mileage will vary when it comes to the suggestion that Myers supernaturally influences Corey to commit murder.

All-in-all, a more interesting film than many give it credit for. If you've only seen it once, give it another go this Halloween - you might be surprised by how much you don't hate it after a second watch.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch

Did You Catch the 'Halloween 3' Reference in the New 'Halloween' Trailer? - Bloody Disgusting

How can the Halloween movie without Michael Myers rank so highly? Well, because it's still a pretty damn good little horror flick.

Season of the Witch was originally envisioned as a re-imagining of the franchise as an anthology, but fan outcry forced the studio to bring Myers back for the fourth instalment. Because of this, SOTW is often ignored, but there's a lot to like in this very odd, often unsettling tale of killer masks, ancient Celtic festivals and... robots? Yep, robots.

If you've never seen it, give it a shot.

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers

Halloween 4's shocking ending is a true WTF moment | SYFY WIRE

The Shape returned for the fourth Halloween movie, which is probably quite a bit better than you remember.

Though it never gets near Carpenter's original - or its follow-up, for that matter - TROMM still has some genuine moments of tension, thanks in no small part to a terrific debut performance from young Danielle Harris as Michael's niece, Jamie.

Plus, the ending still remains among the most shocking of the entire franchise.

Halloween II (1981)

Halloween II (1981) | MUBI

The follow-up to the first Halloween was not helmed by John Carpenter (and it shows), but the horror maestro did produce and co-write the script, so it does at least bear his fingerprints to a degree.

Picking up directly where the original left off, we follow Myers on a killing spree through the hospital where Laurie is being treated, with Loomis hot on his trail.

It's a solid slasher with a lot more blood than its relatively restrained predecessor, but first-time director Rick Rosenthal doesn't quite capture the atmosphere or dread that comes so effortlessly to Carpenter, and you'll likely feel a sense of déjà vu before the credits roll.

Halloween: H2O

Halloween H20: 20 years Later

The highly-underrated seventh entry in the series brought back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode and was supposed to serve as the final nail in Michael Myers' coffin until his wretched Resurrection.

David Gordon Green and Danny McBride may never admit it, but they clearly took inspiration from the premise of H2O for their revival, even if the execution of the story plays out (a little) differently.

The movie is far from perfect (there's the usual irritating cannon fodder and Myers' mask is laughably awful), but overall, it's a terrific entry in the franchise, and is worth watching for Laurie's final stand against her murderous brother alone.

Halloween (2018)

Halloween' Review

Because the follow-ups are generally viewed as sub-par, it might be easy to forget just how good Green's first Halloween movie really is.

There are problems (the Dr. Sartain twist is silly and a lot of the humor falls flat), but overall, Halloween 2018 comes the closest to replicating the atmosphere of the original while also serving as a satisfying continuation (that really should have been a conclusion) to Laurie Strode and Michael Myers' twisted story.

Jamie Lee Curtis is excellent, and she's backed up by a solid supporting cast which includes the always watchable Judy Greer and newcomer Andi Matichak as Laurie's granddaughter.

Tense, gory, funny, even moving at times, it's difficult to imagine any fans of the franchise being disappointed.

Halloween (1978)

Halloween' 1978: The Times Finally Reviews a Horror Classic - The New York Times

As great as Halloween 2018 is, it was never going to touch the original!

What can one say about John Carpenter's master-class in suspense that hasn't been said already? The 1978 movie may have dated a little in some respects, but it still retains its power to unsettle, unnerve and downright terrify at times.

There's an atmosphere of dread that pervades Halloween that has arguably yet to be matched by any modern-day horror film, with Carpenter's iconic score doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

Do yourself a favor and dim the lights, stick the jack o' lantern on the fireplace, and revisit a true classic this weekend.

Zombie's Halloween 2 is much higher than I'd put it, but other than that, this list feels pretty close to how I rank em.

The genuine fact is that there is only one truly good film in this list which is the original Halloween movie. Saw it for the first time when I was 12 and was blown away. After that I obsessed over it and worked my way through the 4 sequels that existed at the time and was so underwhelmed I can't even articulate how much so. A year later "The curse of Michael Myers" came out and once again I couldn't wait to see it. Went to the theater to see it and discovered it was like, the worst movie of all time. After that my interest in sequels for this franchise died.

Original Halloween is a movie of perfect atmosphere and mood. I could spend days just meandering the dreamscape Carpenter created in that movie with his sound and vision.

@Lucasberg - based. I kinda wish we could get a sequel to The Thing with Wyatt Russel. I know Carpenter has said Blumhouse wants to do a sequel and the potential for it to be horrendous is huge, but man I just always wanted more from that world.
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 10/31/2025, 6:25 PM
@McMurdo - yep that’s Carpenter’s other big deal to me. I like other things Carpenter made like The Fog, Escape From NY, Big Trouble in Little China, and even They Live. But Halloween and The Thing are as good as it gets.

I would be down for a sequel to the Thing with Wyatt if in the right hands. Maybe the director of It Follows could pull it off.

By the way, Dario Argento l’s Deep Red and Suspiria are very different in some ways from Carpenter’s greats but those are also amazing at mood and atmosphere if you haven’t seen, just saying

not a single one of Green's Halloween film's are good. the bus escape in the first one is horrendously stupid. The original film is great but it comes from the guy who gave us The Thing, Escape from New York, and Assault on Precinct 13....what do you expect? the rest are miserable. Season of Witch was interesting and I actually wish they had stuck with the idea of Halloween being an anthology film series, personally.

@McMurdo - I liked H18, and Kills had promise, if it wasn’t so poorly written and could decide on a narrative to actually stick to... but Ends was such garbage that it ruined any thread of decency within the entire trilogy.

Putting anything behind Ends is a travesty... and RZH2 is (MAYBE) only marginally better, but if so, not by much AT ALL.

I actually wish they had done a new film each year or every other year along the anthology, and only returned to Michael like every 5 or so years.

BUT... I will say, I have a soft spot for 4-6, having been far too young when I watched them to realize how bad they are. I was too young to have known that different directors would have had different visions, so in my unofficial head cannon, because I watched H6 at such a young age, Michael was always cursed by the Cult of Thorne, and that’s why he was able to withstand so much punishment.

The DGG trilogy is funny bc it went SOOO FAR out of it’s way to say that the H6 bull shit didn’t exist, and Michael was just a man, only to retcon it in the last minute of the sequel to H18... then to completely shit on the end of Kills in Ends, and rewrite whatever trajectory they had been setting up at the end of kills. That Trilogy is a worse mess that H4-6 IMO.

HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 10/31/2025, 5:33 PM
@ModHaterSLADE - I do think that Kills has Michael at some of his most violent moments. The emergence from the burning house vs. the firefighters for example is epic. But there were a number of less than ideal decisions made in that film.

@dragon316 - haha I hear you man, but it is just a way of wording the fact that you KNOW it’s garbage, but like it anyway. It’s like enjoying Taco Bell... no one is going “man this is some gourmet shit right here”... it’s just trash that’s fun to eat when you’re in your low places, just like our guilty pleasure watch movies....
No one is a bigger proponent of letting your geek flag fly than I am (as I wear a Nosferatu- not the movie, but Vampirefreaks brand- because it’s [frick]ing awesome- and a similar hat out with my little monsters trick r treating tonight with my neighbors... who by now, just laugh at my neediness).

I get what you’re saying and you’re not wrong, but as long as it’s done in a fun, self-deprecating manner, all is well. Fun, being the... shit, if forget how that saying goes because vampire wine is getting to me now. You know what I’m trying to say. Anyway, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!

11, 12 and 13: Three way tie for terrible with Halloween Resurrection, RZ Halloween 2 (2009), and Halloween Ends

The problem with Kills is that it can’t figure out WHAT THE [frick] it’s trying to say or do. Halloween 2018 set an entirely new Franchise up around the notion of retconning EVERYTHING so that Michael is just some random psycho that snapped and started killing people, becoming the shape. Ended great and did what it sought out to do. I loved it, falling only behind the Carpeter films. BUT, then it decides to be some talking piece on the evils of mob violence while making a mockery of everything it’s trying to condemn, and in the last 2 minutes of Kills, DGG completely shits on everything he used to justify his retcon in the first place! Why change all of that, only to say “no, Michael IS in fact, supernatural, in the last 2 minutes of a movie when you spend almost the entirety of those 2 movies highlighting the fact that he’s just an evil person?!?!
I mean, Ends is such a cluster [frick] that it can’t even try to follow the thread that Kills established.

Say what you will about 4-6, but at least it’s a semi-cohesive narrative that doesn’t shit all over itself like DGG did... and for a legacy sequel in the age of legacy sequels, it doesn’t’ live up to what it should. At least 4-6 have the added benefit of nostalgia and the wonkiness of the 90’s horror.

Anyway, that’s my list.

This will be super unpopular....
I'm really not a fan of the original Halloween. I find it long, drawn out, and rather boring.

H2O is my favorite. The moment Strode sees Michael through that window in the door (right after the intense scene of her son and Molly being stuck in between the gate and door) is all kinds of epic.
Halloween '18 completely ripped off the story of H2O and it was boring too.

I find Halloween 2 being my second fav because it was scarier, way better kills, and Laurie having to flee from Michael while drugged up and broken bones.

The rest for me is "eh" to downright awful.

*Side note:
Zombie is already a f***Ed up guy, but him casting Danielle Harris in his movies as a throwback to H4 and 5 would have been cool if it wasn't freaking creepy having her nude years later after she was around 11 or so in her previous films.
I get it's legal but the correlation just grosses me out.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 10/31/2025, 10:10 PM
Halloween Ends is incredible, and I am astounded to see so much Ends hate here. Ends is top 5 Halloween, easily. Some of you wouldn’t know good if it bit you in the ass.

I also have a soft spot for Resurrection. I wrote a fairly lengthy piece in a horror mag many years ago singing its praises. Sure, it’s dumb, but it’s got more going for it than people give it credit for. It takes cues from Scream and dives into this meta territory that’s a lot of fun, and it takes some bold shots like actually making Michael the protagonist of a Halloween film (rewatch the movie with this mindset and it’s so much better). People dismiss it for the cheese factor and Busta Rhymes, but it’s fun and different for a Halloween film.

Anyway, the OG Halloween is the best, and the Rob Zombie Halloween is the worst (I say this as a fan of Zombie’s other work). I can argue about everything in between, but those are absolutes.
