Tim Curry, Star Of IT And The Rocky Horror Picture Show Has Died Aged 80

We've lost another legend, as it's been confirmed that Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York) has passed away at age 80, leaving behind an amazing legacy.

Tim Curry, the legendary British actor whose extraordinary career made him a beloved figure across horror, fantasy, comedy and cult cinema, has died at 80. Curry passed away on Tuesday night at his Los Angeles home, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than five decades.

For genre fans, however, Curry's legacy will forever be tied to three unforgettable performances. The first came in 1975, when he reprised his stage role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film initially struggled to find an audience. However, it later became one of cinema's most enduring cult classics.

A decade later, Curry embraced another iconic genre role in Ridley Scott's Legend. Buried beneath extensive prosthetics and makeup, he played the Lord of Darkness opposite a young Tom Cruise, delivering a gloriously theatrical villain.

Then came perhaps Curry's most terrifying and iconic performance. In 1990, he played Pennywise the Clown in the TV adaptation of Stephen King's IT. With little more than his voice, expressions and unnerving physicality, Curry transformed Pennywise and left a lasting impression on a whole generation of young horror fans.

There was more to Curry than just horror. He also starred in Clue, where his frantic performance as butler Wadsworth remains a highlight of the beloved murder mystery, and Muppet Treasure Island, in which he had enormous fun playing Long John Silver. He also appeared as Rooster Hannigan in Annie, Mr. Hector in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers.

His distinctive voice also opened the door to a hugely successful animation career, including the beloved role of Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys. Curry was also the original voice of The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, but was replaced by Mark Hamill when executives deemed his performance too frightening.

A devastating stroke in 2012 severely affected Curry's mobility. Still, he continued performing where possible, including returning as the narrator for the 2016 Rocky Horror Picture Show television movie and appearing in the 2024 horror film Stream.

Tim Curry leaves behind a body of work unlike almost any other. From Frank-N-Furter and Pennywise to Darkness and Wadsworth, he understood that genre performances could be simultaneously outrageous, frightening, funny and unforgettable.

His unmistakable legacy will endure for generations to come, and our thoughts go out to his friends and family at this difficult time.

@Ikusa -

Feeling sorrow for the passing of a legendary artist and wrath for the undeservimg survival of a similarly aged degenerate in power are not mutually exclussive.

First learn to compartmentalize, and then try to project your shame of belonging to a cult elsewhere.

@TemporarilyHere - That's the dumbest thing I've read today.

“Compartmentalize”? You turn someone’s death into an excuse to fantasize about someone else’s. That’s not emotional sophistication; it’s just bitterness with a thesaurus.

Derp.

@Ikusa -

Do you even know what compartmentalization is? To keep separate and irrelevant. To understand that one does not relate to the other, let alone cause it as you clearly and deliberately imply.

Educate yourself. Assuming your leader allows you, that is.

Oh Man....So many talented people going all near the same time.

I thought he would make for a great Joker back in the day.

And I think he was actually cast as the voice of him in BatmanTAS but had to leave due to illness leaving the way for MArk Hamil to replace him.
