BOX OFFICE: This Is The Movie Which Has Finally Dethroned STAR WARS: TFA In The US

It had to happen eventually, but the fact that it was this movie is definitely a surprise! That's right, it looks like Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be knocked from the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, so hit the jump for details...

There's a war raging at the North American box office this weekend as Star Wars: The Force Awakens goes head to head with...The Revenant! It was thought that Ride Along 2 would inevitably dethrone the movie next week, but early numbers from yesterday indicate that the Alejandro G. Inarritu helmed release actually beat the epic space opera. It took an estimated $14.3 million on Friday compred to Star Wars' $10.7 million, and while it was initially thought that The Revenant might only gross $20 million this weekend, it's exceeding expectations in a major way, and is estimated to make $37 million this weekend. The Force Awakens on the other hand is taking aim at $36 million, and this is such a close race that we're just going to have to wait and see which movie wins. Does it matter if this new chapter of the Star Wars franchise has come in at #2? Well, seeing as it's about to make history by crossing the $800 million mark, I'm going to go with no!
