More concept art from Sony Pictures' scrapped Sinister Six movie has been revealed. Following our first look at a piece showing The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield being dropped into the Savage Land, we now see his web-slinger squaring off against Doctor Octopus.
The villain, played by Alfred Molina, has been reimagined here and now resembles the character's Ultimate Universe counterpart. In what was clearly going to be a high-stakes action sequence, Spidey is wearing his civvies and mask, likely meaning he's had to don that in a hurry to defend himself against a rampaging Doc Ock.
The fight is taking place upside down, with Spider-Man and the sinister baddie squaring off on the roof of a library. Superman and Masters of the Universe artist Victor Martinez shared the artwork.
There are several conflicting reports about what Sinister Six looked like, including Doctor Octopus replacing the Green Goblin as the movie's main antagonist (Pandora's Box may have factored into the story). Ultimately, Spider-Man and the other baddies—portrayed in a sympathetic light—may have teamed up against Otto Octavius.
Sinister Six never had a confirmed cast beyond Garfield's Peter Parker. However, Sony Hack emails revealed that Tom Hardy, Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, Chris O'Dowd, Michael Pena, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, and Sharlto Copley were all eyed for Sandman.
Emily Blunt was on the wishlist for Scorpia, as were Emilia Clarke and Rose Byrne. Colin Firth was named as a contender for Vulture, while Denzel Washington, George Clooney, and Daniel Craig were similarly considered for undisclosed villains. Whether any of them would have ultimately agreed to star in The Amazing Spider-Man spin-off is another matter, of course.
As for Doc Ock, Sean Penn and Woody Harrelson were in the mix to lead the villainous team, suggesting Sony Pictures wanted to find a heavy-hitter to bring Otto Octavius back to the big screen.
"I had a big Spider-Man movie about the Sinister Six go down because of the Sony hack," filmmaker Drew Goddard previously said. "My office was right on the lot, and I saw the FBI swarm in and the helicopters fly over the studio."
"I was sad about it, but there was literally nothing I could do to change the course of events," he continued. "I suppose it was better than if they hadn’t liked the script."
