RUMOR: New Details On SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY's Villain, Possible Daredevil Team-up, "Evil" MIT, And More

More Spider-Man: Brand New Day rumours have found their way online today, including details on the movie's villain and supporting cast. We also have another set video and details on the production pause.

Following the latest addition to the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's fair to say the movie is shaping up to be the web-slinger's most exciting solo adventure to date.

Fans remain eager to see what Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton has planned for the web-spinner, and a few new details may have come our way today courtesy of The Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez.

According to the insider, The Punisher Special Presentation will set the stage for Frank Castle's role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He also seems fairly confident that we'll see Spider-Man, Daredevil, and The Punisher share the screen in the future, "with more characters."

Perez adds that Peter Parker will make his own tech and gadgets moving forward, and doesn't anticipate Marvel Studios revisiting Spider-Man: No Way Home's Venom tease (that's not to say the Symbiote won't appear in this or another Spider-Man movie; the alien suit just won't hail from Sony's Marvel Universe). We still think the Russos will add the Symbiote to the mix in Avengers: Secret Wars.

The plan is supposedly for Spidey to eventually face the Earth 616 Variant of the Green Goblin, but when it comes to Spider-Man: Brand New Day's villain, Perez notes, "[They're] simpler, meaner, badder [than Alistair Smythe], and even Tom Holland technically spoiled it in an interview."

The scooper also backs up Daniel Richtman's report about Florence Pugh returning as Yelena Belova in the movie, but compares the extent of her role to that of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home

One of the most interesting tidbits comes when Perez says MIT—the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where MJ and Ned Leeds are currently studying—will be portrayed as "evil" in the MCU.

In related news, Mail Online claims that Tom Holland's recovery from a mild concussion is likely to cost Spider-Man: Brand New Day a whopping £10.5 million ($14 million).

A supposed insider told the tabloid, 'It's a headache for any production to have to pause filming, but with a movie of this scale it will be a huge migraine for the producers and studio. Crew still need to be paid throughout the delay and there is also secondary location costs to consider."

"While health and safety comes first, everyone on the shoot will be hoping to get the cameras rolling again sooner rather than later."

A new Spider-Man: Brand New Day set video shows the hero attempting to slow that tank's momentum as it seemingly crashes into (not out of) a prison. Could this lead to the huge prison fight sequence we've previously heard about? It seems likely, though the wall-crawler seemingly has his hands full with the cops.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton directs Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Tom Holland leads a cast that also includes Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, Tramell Tillman, and Liza Colón-Zayas. Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh is also rumoured to have joined the cast.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.

Such a weird decision to chose Punisher over Daredevil for a PG Spider-man movie. Daredevil already showed up in NWH. Choosing DD over the Punisher could boost Born Again views and set up S2 of the show that really needs more audience.

@ImNotaBot - simple DD team up would have been great

@ImNotaBot - Well, Punisher originally was a Spidey character, first appearing in the web head’s comic so Im sure that had something to do with it.

Nightwing1015 - 9/23/2025, 7:13 PM
@ImNotaBot - Punisher is an arguably more popular and well-known character and has that legacy of first appearing in the Amazing Spider-Man. I think the decision makes sense although the best decision would be to feature DD also (which maybe they're doing secretly?)

Apophis71 - 9/23/2025, 7:56 PM
@ImNotaBot - I can see that PoV but then there would be more variables as to where narratively DD was upto whilst working on a season 2 with the third season already on the cards. Punisher would be easier to dip out with more predetermined definition as to his status heading into SM4, STILL adds connectivity of DD to Peter and works better if delving into more darker paths and Parker choosing what sort of hero he wants to be etc.

It isn't like Spider-man has EVER needed another A list character to have appeal and draw in an audience even if could be said he had some of that with Iron Man. There has never been a Marvel character anywhere close to the popularity of Spider-Man, at times left ALL other comic book characters in the dust with sales from any publisher.

Ultimately the type of journey and narrative they feel fits best for where the character is should trump which other characters are to appear alongside him as it will likely be Peter raising the profile of the supporting character at this point, not the other way around. That and DD's Super Power would mean he would work out Parker is SM in no time thus undermining the whole nobody knows who he is and when/how/who will break the spell suspense.

@ImNotaBot - I think Holland probably pushed to get Bernthal involved. They have worked together previously on Pilgramage and the upcoming Odyssey, in fact they even helped each other make their audition tapes for their respective Marvel roles when they filmed Pilgrimage. So I suspect they like working with each other and have decent chemistry. I suspect Daredevil’s schedule might limit Charlie Cox’s availability at the moment too.

@Nightwing1015 - Okay, well since you said arguably, I am going to have to say that Daredevil is more well-known and popular than Punisher.

Cretton made a mediocre Shang-chi movie that turned to crap in the final act.

Why did Disney think he could handle their billion $ golden goose Spider-Man?

Oh...

@DocSpock - I liked Shang Chi but you’re right - the third act is total ass.

Interesting (if it’s true that is) that The Punisher special sets up Frank in BND rather then BA: S2 since I felt it would that for the latter but I don’t think he’s even been confirmed to be in that as of yet so we’ll see…

If he’s not in it then I think it’s probably Frank going into hiding again or on the run during Fisk’s reign until he’s perhaps forced to go on the offensive by Ma Gnucci for whatever reason they give in the show.

Not sure what to think about the MCU MIT being evil lol but it makes me think it will just be a joke by Ned or MJ in relation to their curriculum etc.

Also the villain apparently being “simpler , meaner & badder” makes me think it might just be Scorpion or even Tombstone which I’m cool with tbh!!.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/23/2025, 7:59 PM
@TheVisionary25 - At a guess, it will likely more be a single research facility with big business backing AT MIT with nefarious intent that could paint the whole place as 'evil' in the eyes of the characters thus audience. The Uni heads themselves and most the campus would be unaware of the darker aspects of one specific facility and staff within it I'd say.
RolandD
RolandD - 9/23/2025, 9:41 PM
@TheVisionary25 @Apophis71 - This MIT is evil in the MCU doesn’t make any sense to me. If they were going to make an evil university, I think they would make it a fictional one and not one as highly thought of it as MIT. It is The Cosmic Circus, so there’s that also
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 9/24/2025, 12:57 AM
@RolandD - didn’t we already see MIT ? I swore that’s where Tony was giving his speech in civil war and riri was going to school
RolandD
RolandD - 9/24/2025, 1:05 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - 💯 That’s another reason why I don’t believe this part of that rumor because you’re 100% right
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/24/2025, 6:54 AM
@RolandD - I agree, MIT itself won't be cos as you say they would go for a fictional one otherwise, but it having within it something like an Osborn building (or some other company/investor) for research that could be a front for something evil/criminal and thus the characters view the entire Uni as dodgy.

That nuance/detail has been lost during chineese whispers to the scooper IF any truth to it at all cos obv can always be total BS. That could include the head of the Uni being evil too working with a big bad in the same sorta way you had Hydra bods at the top levels of AoS that needs to be exposed and sent off to the tank.

Those sort of business/uni partnerships are fairly common IRL with big pharma for instance having a research facility on campus at medical colleges and the like.

Which is why if ANY truth to any of it then be something like that with research into dodgy drugs of the super soldier type ilk (the sort of things that could lead to Lizard and similar), dodgy prosthetics of the Doc Ock kind, dodgy AI or weapons tech etc all that sort of potentialy nefarious stuff for something like A.I.M. or O.X.E.
RolandD
RolandD - 9/24/2025, 11:35 AM
@Apophis71 -Agreed .After I posted my comment, I also thought about how there could be issue/“evil” within MIT, not painting it with a wide brush as suggested by the rumor

The No Way Home Venom tease didn't even happen in the MCU. It happened in Sony's universe so nothing will ever come of it.
Well it did. It culminated in Venom Last Dance.

“Could this lead to the huge prison fight sequence we've previously heard about?“

I hadn’t heard about a prison fight before. If it’s with scorpion, hopefully they take it to the courtyard where it will be snowing no doubt 🕷️❄️🦂

@ObserverIO - Sadly it’s not Natasha. I mean, I love Yelena and her character, but it’s Matt and Natasha that have history in the comics of course

@RolandD - I'll take what I can get. But if they can bring back Natasha in the reboot and do it properly that would be better for sure.

We are finally getting the street-level Spider-man film and people are not giving it enough credit. Feige and Holland fought HARD to get this for the fans. Remember SONY wanted another multiverse-centric film and Holland almost quit over it (if we believe rumors on the set). Despite the MCU taking a turn toward focusing on what the fans really want, I STILL see people pessimistic about the future of the MCU. Some people are never happy.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/24/2025, 3:41 AM
@JackDeth - I always feel more motivated to complain or criticize something negatively than to praise something good.

Whenever they seem to be doing great things I'm just like, yeah cool they got this. And so I don't feel the need to comment.

But yeah, just for the record, everything I'm hearing about Spider-Man is getting me really excited. They do got this. They seem to have turned it around from Sony's plan of just trying to replicate NWH and expecting the same results a second time, to instead give the fans the kind of Spidey film they've been wanting to see for a long time.

JackDeth - 9/24/2025, 8:34 AM
@ObserverIO - "I always feel more motivated to complain or criticize something negatively than to praise something good."

See, that's what I don't understand. Why is that? Isn't it more fun to say stuff like, 'THE FINALE of ALIEN: EARTH is on tonight and I am HYPED !!' than to bitch about something you can't control.

Why do people feel the need to complain so much. It's not like the creators are reading it going, 'Oh no, they don't like it? Guess I better change it for them.' Nine times out of ten, the show or film has already been made and there's nothing anyone can do (with some rare exceptions, like fixing the CG on Sonic or something). Why the urge to moan about how it isn't up to your standards?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/24/2025, 10:59 AM
@JackDeth - Yeah, I know you're right but... 🤷

I still think that Ugly Sonic thing was like a 4D Chess promotional technique or something. I'm very suspicious of that whole thing.

Thanks for reminding me about the finale for Alien: Earth btw. Now I am hyped.

I will go to see it but would be more interested if daredevil replaced punisher and they didn't choose such an uninspiring director
AC1
AC1 - 9/24/2025, 6:59 AM
@SteviesRightFoo - uninspiring? He directed one of the best post-Endgame Marvel movies with some very compelling characters, talented actors, a good story and brilliant action sequences!

Also I'd love for Daredevil to be part of the movie and for him to team up with Spidey, BUT I don't think you can replace Punisher with Daredevil without completely changing the narrative, because it sounds like Punisher is going to be a secondary antagonist in this movie rather than someone Spidey would be teaming up with (unless they reluctantly team up at some point) but even then it would be a vastly different dynamic to a Spidey/Daredevil team up story.
SteviesRightFoo
SteviesRightFoo - 9/24/2025, 7:21 AM
@AC1 - we will all literally eat up any sort of slop in movies and gaming at this stage. There is no argument that can convince me that shang chi is anything other than a bang average film
AC1
AC1 - 9/24/2025, 10:47 AM
@SteviesRightFoo - Personally I'd say "bang average" would be more like Captain Marvel, Age of Ultron, Multiverse of Madness, Ant-Man 2, and Eternals. I'd put Shang-Chi way above that. But hey, to each their own!
SteviesRightFoo
SteviesRightFoo - 9/24/2025, 10:53 AM
@AC1 - back then , I would've agreed on age of ultra but we would be lucky to get a film of that quality these days

I'm surprised no one is talking about the "goal is to eventually lead to the 616 Green Goblin" I don't understand how they do this? Norman stated in NWH, that there was no Oscorp here. Going to have to take some major rewrites of Norman/Harry's life to bring them in. Maybe Oscorp is more of a company that's very behind the scenes of the Military Industrial Complex, and isn't public? Very curious.
