After breaking several records without them, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is playing on select IMAX screens this weekend. Thanks to that boost, Deadline's current estimates suggest the movie will gross between $135 million and $140 million (if not more).
After an estimated $40 million Friday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day likely won't beat Avengers: Endgame ($147.3 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($149.2 million) for the second-biggest weekend ever. Still, third place is a spectacular achievement, and places it well ahead of Avengers: Infinity War ($114.7 million).
If Spider-Man: Brand New Day finishes on the higher end, it should reach $650.8 million by close of business on Sunday. That would place it roughly 5% ahead of Avengers: Endgame at the same point in its run. In 2019, that movie grossed $858.3 million, though Spidey's latest movie stands a chance of dethroning it for second place behind The Force Awakens' $936.6 million.
If this September's Avengers: Endgame Encore isn't considered a separate release (and it likely won't be in terms of box office tallies), then it could regain a few of its records before the year is over.
Back to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and as of last night, the movie had made $806.3 million internationally to take its global cume to $1.32 billion in just 9 days. By today, it will surpass $1.4 billion to beat Avengers: Age of Ultron and be crowned the fifth highest-grossing comic book movie of all-time.
$2 billion is guaranteed, and while that won't happen this weekend, it is coming early next week. How high Spider-Man: Brand New Day can go beyond that is hard to say, but if it continues performing strongly this week, then it will soon be challenging the likes of Titanic, Ne Zha 2, and Avatar: The Way of Water to at least become the third biggest movie in history behind Avengers: Endgame and Avatar.
In second place this weekend is The Odyssey with $28.5 million, taking its running cume to $458.1 million. After recently passing $1 billion worldwide, it's on course to beat The Dark Knight Rises and become Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing movie ever.
In third place is One Night Only with a projected $6 million weekend. Toy Story 5, meanwhile, slips to fourth with $4.3 million, and Super Troopers 3 is eyeing a $4 million start. Neither of those movies appears to be connecting with audiences in the same way as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as One Night Only has been awarded a solid B+, while the Super Troopers threequel has a disappointing B-.
