SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY's Lead Villain Possibly Revealed; AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY May Still Not Have An Ending

We have a couple of big rumours to share with you today, one of which may reveal Spider-Man: Brand New Day's big bad. Another claims to shed some light on where things stand with Avengers: Doomsday...

By JoshWilding - Sep 27, 2025 12:09 PM EST

Yesterday, we learned that Spider-Man: Brand New Day's lead villain will reportedly be a female shapeshifter. We're not sure what this means for characters like The Scorpion and Tombstone (not to mention The Punisher and The Hulk), but we may now know who she is.

Multiple online scoopers are indicating that Shathra is the movie's big bad, with Stranger Things star Sadie Sink playing the character.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is a big fan of J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr.'s Amazing Spider-Man run; he wrote the foreword for "Coming Home," while Spidey's budding friendship with Doctor Strange ended up being a big part of Spider-Man: No Way Home

Shathra debuted in 2002's Amazing Spider-Man #46, where she was introduced as the Spider-Wasp totem, a monstrous, insectoid predator of the Astral Plane who sought to kill Spidey and feed him to her young. The villain took on a human form to cause chaos in the web-slinger's personal life, and very nearly revealed his secret identity on national television.

In recent years, we've learned that the elder goddess was tasked with designing the Celestial Map of Humanity, the "Great Nest." Its creation was overshadowed by her sister Neith's "Great Web," and driven to madness, she eventually became a Multiversal threat seeking to bring every Spider-Hero and Web of Life and Destiny under her control.

We've heard that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will mix street-level storytelling with a little bit of the Multiverse, and this could be the excuse Sony Pictures is looking for to bring back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spidey Variants in the final act.

They're expected to feature in the next Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars, and we got an update on the latter during a recent edition of The Hot Mic podcast.

"They keep saying that the script was finished, and yes, they had a finished script, but the ending had not been figured out and they were rewriting scenes on the set," John Rocha explained. "Even now, after wrapping Doomsday, they're not really finished. They're still shooting a lot more, my source says, in 2026 before moving on to Secret Wars in the summer."

This might not sound too good, but let's not forget that the same was the case for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Those remain two of the most critically and commercially successful superhero movies of all time.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton directs Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Tom Holland stars with Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III, and Liza Colón-Zayas. Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh is also rumoured to have joined the cast.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026. Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive on December 17, 2027.

Not having a ending is not a finished script.

@Santanaonfire - I know right

Plus Cumming said they eventually got a finished script which meant they had an ending in place but Feige says that from the first Iron Man , they have never worked with a finished script and are always working on the film till the premeire so I wouldn’t be surprise if they change the ending via planned reshoots etc.

@Santanaonfire - True but likely similar to with Infinity war where they hadn't fully worked out where one film ended and the next started. Quick recap, the blip was in the original scripts intended to be between the two films but changed to have the whole finding and killing Thanos at the start of Endgame instead of the end of Infinity war.

IOW two things can be true at the same time, that there was and will be A completed script prior to production whilst at the same time not have a fully set in stone ending when doing two films back to back in these sort of two parters AND even with a full script almost ALL films make changes as they go along if things aren't clicking/better ideas present themselves. Doubly so in this case as not all the cast they likely wanted for the films had signed on to return from the FoxMen movies but couldn't afford to delay production as such if/when they DID agree to return of if they never did some alterations would be required.

As long as this movie shows some Unity in the USA , we need a Hero to inspire us after we lost a real American Hero to hatred AND darkness....a real MCU rebirth while DC Is in a nazi universe

RE "....we need a Hero to inspire us after we lost a real American Hero to hatred AND darkness"

Which "hero" would that be, exactly?

Shathra the insectoid predator from the Astral Plane?... that sounds like a VERY street-level, grounded story.
Skestra

@rychlec - Right? Now I can see why they brought the Punisher into this.
LenSpiderman
LenSpiderman - 9/27/2025, 3:57 PM
@rychlec - this very same website jumped to the conclusion that shathra was the villain yesterday, while reporting on a rumor that the villain was a shape shifting female. They also guessed that this alleged character was a gender swapped chameleon (a character that has already been involved in the current spidey movie universe so recreating the character as a gender swapped version makes little sense). Now, apropos of no new legit information, they are reporting that there’s a rumor that the rumor THEY started about the other rumor is going around. I wouldn’t put too much stock in this rumor. We’re already 3+ layers deep in unfounded information.

Apophis71 - 9/27/2025, 7:03 PM
@LenSpiderman - I forgot about the bus driver in Far From Home being Dmitri Smerdyakov, I only vaguely remembered that the character was also in Sony's Kraven movie. So yeh, any of this talk of a gender swapped Chameleon holds zero water, even if they refer to whoever as A chameleon of having chameleon powers unless it is the dude from FFH it won't be THE chameleon, gender swapped or otherwise as it would be the third time in six years Sony would be trying to use him/her (plus the animated YFNSM alt timeline version on D+).

I have zero idea where the rumor of Shathra came from, the article yesterday was the first time I heard mention of her, of if seen it before forgot. That said just cos a character in the comics came from an alt universe/dimension wouldn't mean they would have to in this BUT the film can still be grounded and have a villain from an astral plane or whatever at the same time. For a quick example it would be possible that Shathra was a villain from another timeline that also was on 616 in NWH but escaped notice/wasn't returned by Dr Strange. Maybe she'd already killed A Spider-man or was about to be defeated by one thus has been plotting since taking down the 616 version but with nobody knowing who he is has taken a few years to plot his demise (or someone just made up random BS).

The most important part of a script is the [frick]ING BEGINNING AND END. Morons
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/27/2025, 7:07 PM
@bobevanz - Technicaly speaking if doing a two part story split between two films where one ends and the next begins can have more flux thus of less import than in a standalone movie. We had that exact scenario play out with IW/Endgame and worked out fine so...
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 9/27/2025, 12:39 PM
Just how many villains are in this Spider-Man movie ? It seems like we're hearing about someone new every other day.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/27/2025, 7:36 PM
@TheJok3r - I mean, a lot of names have been thrown out by scoopers but why any of us fully believe any of those is beyond me.

It isn't always a huge issue having several villains in a film, case in point F4, depends how they are used. IF it is just an opening montage or using some established ones as goons they will face on the way to tackling the main one it can be unsatisfying (Crossbones) in terms of that one character but not an issue at all for how good a film like Civil War is. Then there is the NWH scenario where there is multiple villains tackled one at a time that all come together to fight Spider-man in the final act which can work out great if well written/executed.

Thus far the only confirmed TRUE villains in it are Tombstone and Scorpion. Chameleon was always highly unlikely as was supposedly in FFH already sans any powers and fully used in Kraven so ignore THAT rumor unless the bus driver turns up briefly somewhere.

Punisher will be an antagonist upto a point but one who will become an ally not full villain, no issue there realy. He is supposed to have a sidekick, there IS a chance that turns out to be the shapeshifting villain now being rumored that appears to be one character from the comics (that WAS a Punisher sidekick) but turns out to be this Shathra, an evil Skrull or some other villainous changeling manipulating the heroes (and possibly also some of the secondary villains) as part of some nefarious plot.

Boomerang has been thrown around by some scoopers as has Mr Negative and Tarantula amongst others I likely forgot but those were first being thrown around back when there was division on if it would be fully multiverse or fully grounded tween Disney/Marvel or may have been alternatives under consideration that were not confirmed to be included.

It has been known for a while the main villain hasn't been revealed yet, and still supposed to be Savage Hulk in it but unsure if that WILL still be the case after we had A savage Hulk in Cap4.

TLDR Confirmed to be Scorpion, Toombstone and a unyet confirmed main villain. Beyond that mostly all rumors other than Punisher being in it and a couple cast we know about who we don't know for sure who they are playing. So a sort of confirmed three villains, plus DoDC being idiots in the way again and maybe a Hulk turned savage, beyond that mostly guesswork which rumors turn out to be true.

They always seem on the right track then they puke a bunch of convoluted crap all over these things in the end.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 9/27/2025, 2:30 PM
@Matchesz - Agreed. So many great Spidey villains, and this is who they go with? I'll never forgive Sony for wasting Kraven and robbing fans of a Kraven's Last Hunt adaptation. And they couldn't pick a villain that requires Spidey, Hulk, and Punisher to take down? If Sink was playing Jean, I'd say add the Juggernaut at least.

It almost sounds like Superman's odd act structure. They could have added a secret Kingpin or MCU Norman Osborn/Goblin as the one pulling the strings and working with Doom or something, but they go with a pretty obscure villain in a major Spidey film? Is Sony giving notes to Marvel now?

I have no interest in Shahtra as a baddie so I hope that’s not the case but we’ll see…

Given her shape shifting abilities , it would make sense as to the amount of rumored villains in this film since she could just impersonate them.

Honestly , I would rather it just be Street level with Tombstone & Scorpion as the baddies!!.

It's crazy, Marvel seemed to be invincible for a few years... Remember when we all said "in Fiege we trust" and just blindly knew things would turn out good in the theater... That seems like 200 years ago now.

Considering Doomsday leads directly into the second movie that was scripted by the same writer-director team….i find this rumor a little hard to believe.

The idea that would go with an unknown villain like Stratha is equally hard to believe.

My guess is Sadie Sink is playing a multiverse character in a smaller role who at the very end will be revealed as May Day Parker or someone similar and will pull Peter into the events of Doomsday/Secret Wars. And you can take that theory and cash it.

'And yes, they had a finished script.'

If you don't have your third act, your script is 2/3 finished. Please, someone ask Rocha to get some math classes again.

The biggest mistake Marvel ever did to Spider-Man was give him cosmic enemies. It just defeats the whole "Freak spider with DNA altering properties" storyline that made him so special.
