This weekend, Sir Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars and a movie Warner Bros. Discovery nearly sent to the scrap heap, Coyote vs. ACME, open in theaters. However, neither will dethrone Spider-Man: Brand New Day during its fifth weekend playing in multiplexes.
According to Deadline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is eyeing $18 million in North America, bringing it one step closer to toppling Star Wars: The Force Awakens' record $936 million haul to become the highest-grossing movie ever in the U.S.
The Dog Stars, which has not received positive reviews from critics, is set to kick off its run with $10 million to $14 million. Disney/20th Century Studios' thinking was that the movie would serve as an "adult" alternative to Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey.
As for Coyote vs. ACME, while David Zaslav was happy to scrap the whole thing as a tax write-off, intense online backlash led to indie distributor Ketchup Entertainment stepping in to save the Looney Tunes movie.
While it was initially tracking for a $7 million to $10 million start, that's increased to $15 million this week. Whether it can turn a profit—the movie cost $70 million to produce in 2022—remains to be seen, but it had what's described as a "modest" marketing budget.
So, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will win the weekend again, and it should be interesting to see whether it can fend off Fall 2: Deadpoint
and Onslaught next weekend to be #1 for a sixth time. Either way, with box office takings like that, Digital and 4K Blu-ray releases are likely a long way off.
