MAN OF TOMORROW Director James Gunn Reveals Which Brainiac Story He DIDN'T Take Inspiration From

James Gunn has revealed which Superman story involving the villainous Brainiac he did not take inspiration from while working on the script for Man of Tomorrow...

Brainiac, played by German actor Lars Eidinger, is set to make his big-screen debut in James Gunn's Man of Tomorrow, and the filmmaker was asked whether a certain Superman comic book arc influenced his script on Threads.

Gunn was also asked about the recent Maxima rumor, but didn't respond to that part of the question.

"James, was the Panic In The Sky storyline something you used as an influence on Man of Tomorrow? You've already confirmed Brainiac. Maxima has been heavily rumored. Panic In The Sky is post-Crisis Superman's first time leading a group of heroes. Sounds like your Superman might be doing that in MoT."

Gunn: "I read almost every Brainiac story to put Brainiac in MoT together and used bits and pieces I thought worked best. But PitS wasn't a key influence on the story."

Panic in the Sky was a 1992 crossover event in the four monthly Superman comic books, revolving around the Man of Steel leading Earth's superheroes in fighting an alien invasion led by Brainiac.

Eidinger spoke for the first time about landing the role last week

"For me, it's a true miracle," he told TikTok interviewer DieShowMitChris from the Medienboard Party at the Berlin International Film Festival. "It's truly a miracle that it happened, and I would venture to say that every actor, every actress in Germany, there is a secret hope that one day the call from Hollywood will come."

"I always thought, 'I'm 50 now. Okay, that's it.' Then it suddenly happened, and it all went relatively quickly, didn't it?" he added. "I really can hardly believe it. But it's not then, like, 'Snap' and you're sitting on a beach in LA. First we'll film the movie. I'm very excited."

As for Maxima, several different scoopers sent speculation into overdrive recently by sharing casting details for a character that sounded a lot like Wonder Woman, and it was beginning to look like Gunn really was in the process of searching for an actress to play a new take on the iconic Amazonian warrior for his Superman follow-up.

However, the filmmaker would later debunk the rumor, and NPN has previously reported that the character is actually Maxima, who will serve as the movie's secondary antagonist. Gunn has had no problem shooting down various other rumors relating to MOT, so the fact that he declined to respond to a question about this character might be telling.

Specific plot details remain under wraps, but we know that Man of Tomorrow will focus on the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) putting their differences aside and joining forces to defend the planet against Brainiac

Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

James Gunn EPICALLY shoots down rumors from trolls on social media who say the movie will be another story about a ragtag found family who puts aside their differences to fight an alien threat all to a heckin wholesome le epic soundtrack from the 80s

@RageMonkey - Gunn lies so much he's not even worth taking seriously, this man doesn't really run anything but his own specific pet project(s) whitch have dwindled down to just this and his role as producer of SUPERGIRL, everthing else that was announced in his "GODS & MONSTERS" slate has ether been pushed to the "back of the buss" or outright canceled, namely due to the embarrassing reception to his SUPERMAN film. Michael DeLuca is the guy truly running DC Studios at this time, Gunn is routinely wheeled out to do debunking tours to kill any and all legitimate scoops from gaining any significant traction in the press, being reduced to a highly placed shill essentially. Word is he'll be out regardless of whoever ends up owning WB(the smart money's on Netflix

All of my superhero knowledge comes from movies, tv, and animated shows but at least he uses actual comic storylines. Marvel makes content for normies because they know the Fandom will watch no matter what they release.

@bobevanz - Gunn makes content for himself and to employ his small circle of friends. Normies just happened to tune in sometimes. See Peacemaker season 2.

@RageMonkey - I disagree vehemently.

Normies tuned in to The Boys. Normies tuned in to The Penguin. But not so much Peacemaker. Not even Season 1.

Let me guess: Panic in the Sky is everyone's favorite storyline and now they're further disappointed.

@EskimoJ - LOL I won't whine. I remember liking it a lot in high school. Might reread it this week. Probably liked the aftermath of Lex-Supergirl romance more as I thought that was a crazy twist.

I don't read comics anymore, but when I did I remember the stories were a mixed bag of some good and some bad. I'm not married to 'comic accuracy' like some are. All I care about is good writing and Gunn doesn't miss.

Say what you will about that Krypton series, but they nailed Braniac.

@Bucky74 - I enjoyed the krypton series and wanted to see a season 3 to see where the story goes.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/23/2026, 7:44 PM
@epc1122 - I did too and it ended on a bummer with history changed and no Supes. They needed another season to set things right and fix the timeline!
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/23/2026, 7:54 PM
@Bucky74 - agreed, I hate when a show ends on a cliffhanger. From what I remember, It was also close to crisis from the Arrowverse and was hoping there would be a more definitive conclusion there at least.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/23/2026, 8:21 PM
@epc1122 - That would have been great! They should always at least film a two hour conclusion when they end a series. It benefits them to do that when it comes to DVD releases and streaming.
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/23/2026, 8:48 PM
@Bucky74 - yeah, a built in 2 hour movie. I remember every year for Smallville it was always close to them being canceled. I’m not a fan when a series is too long but also hate when a show ends on a cliffhanger. I was happy Superman and Lois had a definitive conclusion.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/23/2026, 9:58 PM
@epc1122 - Oh, man, I’ll admit, the last 10 minutes of that series had me balling man tears. His grown up sons, when Lois dies and then he passed. I knew they were playing me emotionally and it worked, lol.
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/23/2026, 10:13 PM
@Bucky74 - in my opinion it was such an underrated series. Loved how it was a definitive beginning and ending to a series and it told a new story but also gave backstory. The only thing I thought was missing from the finale was Clark’s parents should have been included when saying goodbye and i was hoping to see John and Jordan more in their super suits. There was some speculation they would get a spinoff but that never panned out. Still, love that show!
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/23/2026, 10:53 PM
@epc1122 - Agreed, excellent quality throughout the series. And he nailed both Clark and Supes to a T. The entire cast really brought it and it was far above typical CW quality
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/23/2026, 11:08 PM
@Bucky74 - I’m always surprised that the series doesn’t get talked about more. It’s just people complaining about the Snyderverse and the Gunnverse and yet Superman and Lois almost never gets talked about.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/24/2026, 7:29 AM
@epc1122 - Probably because it was so good. People like to complain, lol, and there was not much to complain about here. Also, for as good as it was, WB seemed to want to finish the series quietly. There was very little promotion and it seemed to alway fly (no pun intended) under the radar despite being a series about the world’s most famous superhero
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/24/2026, 8:18 AM
@Bucky74 - even though they did finish the series quietly and yes people would rather complain than praise, but people almost never bring the series up. Eh, I like mostly all the version of Superman. Been a fan since I was 4 and can find something to enjoy about any version. Some more than others but it is what it is.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/24/2026, 10:00 AM
@epc1122 - Agreed. It really was a wonderful series with an amazing ending that was emotional and complete ‘. A rare achievement. Hopefully, in the years to come it gets the recognition it deserves.

epc1122 - 2/24/2026, 10:18 AM
@Bucky74 - is this your favorite version of Superman?
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/24/2026, 11:21 AM
@epc1122 - Next to Christopher Reeve's, yes (Cavil is a close third, and Welling's has a special place since I loved Smallville).
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/24/2026, 8:55 PM
@Bucky74 - Christopher Reeve is my number one. I used to love Smallville but it was admittedly a pretty big letdown for me. By season 7 he should have been Superman but unfortunately welling never wanted to be Superman. It is what it is. I liked Cavill but would have liked to see him in a more traditional man of steel sequel with more color and levity. Snyder’s five part Superman plan had him being more like the traditional Superman by episode 5.

Man of steel: finding himself
Batman v Superman: questioning himself still and death
Justice league-resurrection
Justice league part 2-corrupt
Justice League part 3-redemption

Interesting stuff but I wanted a different version of Superman.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/24/2026, 9:04 PM
@epc1122 - I agree on all of that. I think Tom actually regrets not wanting to wear the suit in retrospect.
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/24/2026, 9:16 PM
@Bucky74 - agreed, there’s some really awesome fan made art with welling as Superman. I know it’s controversial here and I know you’re not a fan of Superman 25, but I do like Corenswet in the role as well.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/24/2026, 9:42 PM
@epc1122 - I was very disappointed with Supes 25, but I also wholeheartedly agree that Corenswet was a good choice. To me, it was the script and the material that was the problem. David even had the right instincts in that behind the scenes where he argued with Gunn that Superman shouldn’t lose it and scream in that scene (like a petulant child), but Gunn over rode him. My problem with that film was definitely not Corenswet.
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/24/2026, 10:39 PM
@Bucky74 - i thought in that scene he came off as passionate rather than being a petulant child but it is what it is . He maybe got too triggered over the super sh*t but I don’t think any version is perfect . Overall I enjoyed the movie and thought Corenswet was great in the roll but it’s art which is subjective. But it is what it is, have to go back to work tomorrow so I should go to bed. Hope you have a nice night, Jay!

Bucky74 - 2/25/2026, 10:31 AM
@epc1122 - Thank you, my friend, you too. And I genuinely hope the follow up corrects all the issues I had with Gunn’s first one and turns out great. Superman is the gold standard of heroes.
epc1122
epc1122 - 2/25/2026, 12:17 PM
@Bucky74 - I agree that he’s the gold standard. Some of the outbursts in the movie I get. I love dogs and can understand that one with Lex in the beginning, with Lois it was more like a real relationship which I get. The super sh*t was s little much but eh. And the last one about being human, he seemed passionate but to me it wasn’t whiny. I just hope in the sequel he says something like “I didn’t forget about Mali but thank you for helping me, there’s some good in you”. And then the end will show Luthor is back to scheming or saving tech from brainiac.

Didn't he claim All Star Superman was a big inspiration for his film, where was that? why did he give his Superman suit the kingdom come logo and do nothing with it? he's just a jerry picker stringing along shit he likes with no real thematic substance.

It seems that we have a character arc for Superman...

Funny, it seemed like he never read a Superman comic in his entire life with what he did with the last movie.
