DOCTOR WHO Rumor Reveals That Billie Piper WON'T Play The Time Lord In Upcoming Christmas Special

A new Doctor Who rumour reveals that Billie Piper isn't playing the Sixteenth Doctor in the upcoming Christmas Special, meaning the hunt is on for the show's next Time Lord.

While Doctor Who has an uncertain future after Disney+ ended its deal with the BBC to bring the Time Lord to streaming (a partnership that led to a much bigger budget than the franchise was accustomed to), showrunner Russell T Davies is penning a Christmas Special.

That will air on the BBC later this year, albeit without a global streaming partner. That likely means fans can expect an episode much smaller in scale than those seen since David Tennant's return in the 60th anniversary episodes. Still, in many ways, the Whoniverse was often at its best, creatively speaking, when it had to get inventive with its limited budget.

Whether Davies sticks around beyond the Christmas Special isn't clear, especially as his return to Doctor Who has received a mixed response. From key creative decisions to so-called "woke" storylines, the man who brought the TARDIS back to our screens in 2005 hasn't received the same warm response this time around.

At the end of Season 2, Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor regenerated into a Sixteenth version that shared the same face as former companion, Rose Tyler (played by Billie Piper). While she wasn't officially introduced as the Doctor, it looked like Piper might be the next Time Lord.

Well, The Sun (via SFFGazette.com), a British tabloid and surprisingly good source for Doctor Who news, is reporting that the actress and singer is not the new Doctor. In fact, "producers are trying to find a new Tardis dweller fast as they are committed to a Christmas special — but have yet to start filming."

An insider told them, "From the moment it was confirmed Ncuti was leaving, bosses have subtly been putting feelers out among the industry for an actor who could play The Doctor. Despite once being one of the most coveted roles in TV, it’s now seen as a bit of a poisoned chalice."

"Anyone taking on the job will want to know if they’re playing it for a one-off festive special or beyond as they’ll want to plan their workload over coming years," the source added.

The BBC refused to comment on the report, but in many ways, this was expected. The fact that Piper wasn't introduced as the new Doctor, combined with Rose's link to the TARDIS, suggested the whole thing might be a misdirect. Now, it will seemingly be down to Davies to resolve that before introducing the true Sixteenth Doctor.

Whether he sticks around beyond that to tell their story isn't clear. Still, the BBC has repeatedly said it remains committed to Doctor Who, even as the show looks to evolve following its failed Disney+ partnership and a steep year-over-year decline in ratings. It's previously been reported that the series could take a break or return for much shorter seasons that are cost-effective for the broadcaster.

Keep checking back here for updates as we have them.

There was a prior Timelord that 'tried out' multiple looks during one regeneration (Romana)

Thus if true we could have something similar where we see The Doctor decide not to stick with looking like Billy and changes appearance a second time prior to the adventure but we'll see. I know The Sun CAN get it right with that specific show at times but it is one of the most unreliable Tabloid papers in the UK going so would take it with a huge pinch of salt.

I would prefer that Dr Who went back to a more modest budget without tied to a full partnership deal, will still likely be a million per episode to take advantage of the tax breaks (to thus effectively cost 750K per ep), but these days that is super cheap for drama and with this franchise has always forced more creativity. I was ALWAYS nervous of the bigger budget and pairing with a US company cos EVERY time anything Dr Who related has tried that it hasn't worked out well at all (last Season of Torchwood and the McGann TV movie for instance).

@Apophis71 - you are right in that I didn’t realize until now how all the American collaborations for DW have failed one way or another before unfortunately.

I don’t know if it’s financially viable for the BBC anymore but even just going back to the Smith or Capaldi era in terms of production quality would be fine with me.

Honestly , I wouldn’t be surprised if them already putting out the news in the industry of wanting a new actor for The Doctor is true since I do think Billie will just be a one off that is properly introduced and also done with in the Christmas special this year…

However I can also understand if actors would want something if a definitive answer about their future before auditioning & such since the lack of that is what seemingly caused Ncuti to unfortunately part ways with the role prematurely since he couldn’t put his career on hold for more DW that may or may not have happened.

Anyway while I’m still bummed that Ncuti just got 2 short seasons , I did like his Doctor and era of the show thus I hope it continues post Christmas special due to it being one of my favorites since I started watching during the Matt Smith run!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Still bummed about Ncuti too, I get the issues some have with some of his episodes but he was great in the role and deserved his third season.

Still feel, having gone there, what they should do for the Christmas special is stick with Billie as a one off, pair her with the bi-generation Tennant and wrap up some of the loose ends of the Pantheon arc along with the Doctors daughter and Granddaughter before setting up the actual new Doctor for when it returns. Heck I could even think an unstable regeneration narrative being used where we have multiple in the role, starting with Billie but keeps changing form (other companions or prior Doctors) whilst she works with the 14th Doctor to stabilize their form but maybe in doing so teases the emergence of the valeyard tying him (AND the Pantheon) into why the instability has happened.

@Apophis71 - agreed about Ncuti and his seasons

Your proposed idea could be fun but might be too much for just a single episode.

@TheVisionary25 - Depends how long they intend it to be or if a two parter Christmas and New Year as they've done in the past. If it is only 45mins, sure, keep it simple but would still tend to think BillyDoc pairs with the 14th for the story prior to taking the true 16th Doctor form but you couldn't really tie up anything OTHER than why the Doc took the form of a former companion and fix the issue.

Now if going for two 90mins at Christmas and completed on New Year then the whole Granddaughter/daughter stuff at least I feel SHOULD be dealt with but as long as whatever they come up with is good don't REALY mind other than wouldn't really want the new series when we get it to be expected to deal with any of the leftover stuff.

@Apophis71 - that’s fair.

I think it’s meant to just be a singular episode but could be wrong.

I really miss the Eccelston/Tennant days. Everything felt new and untried, I did feel invested in the story being told then.

How can something be “revealed” by a “rumor”, Josh? Try again on that headline, man.

Assuming this is true (I know, big pinch of salt), I wonder what it would mean about Piper's involvement.
A Romana 1-2 scene were the Doctor quickly flips through bodies, a slow flipping through bodies so a handful of actors get to portray the character for a bit throughout the episode, or would she be "the Doctor" as Heart of the Tardis/Eye of Harmony shenanigan before the regen actually finishes into 16th (so she gets a full episode at being the character without actually burning through a regen)?
