"It Was Heartbreaking": THE FLASH Star Grant Gustin Reveals Scrapped Plans For The Season 9/Series Finale

The Flash star Grant Gustin has revealed some of the scrapped plans for the show's series finale, which came as a result of COVID, and reflects on what sounds like a disappointing final day on set...

In The Flash's Season 9/series finale, Cobalt Blue (Eddie Thawne) resurrected Eobard Thawne, Zoom, Savitar, and Godspeed in the Negative Speed Force and sent them after Team Flash.

Ultimately, Barry Allen and his friends saved the day—Eddie also saw the error of his ways—before the Fastest Man Alive unleashed a lightning bolt that led to the Speed Force choosing Avery Ho, Max Mercury, and Jess Chambers as new speedsters.

It was a solid send-off for The CW series after a near-10-year run, and Grant Gustin has now revealed some of the changes the finale episode went through.

Appearing at SpaceCon 2025, Gustin and co-star Candice Patton (Iris West), with the former confirming, "We had to change parts of that script." He added, "This was two years into COVID, and I had not gotten it. And I got COVID a week and a half before we wrapped. I kept testing positive, and I couldn't come back to work."

"They shut down for a day or two, and they reworked some of it," Gustin explained "I missed three or four days of filming, at least."

One of the biggest changes came when Gustin was no longer able to reprise his role as Savitar. "I was supposed to be in the scene with the prosthetic scar and make-up, with all the bad guys, when it was Savitar in the suit. That was supposed to be [Gustin] as Savitar. There was other stuff that happened too, my stunt double got some stuff, we shot around him."

So, there were a few hiccups, and looking back on his final day of shooting, Gustin admitted it wasn't the most satisfying of experiences.

"My last day of work was alone on a green screen, which also felt right — like it was kind of heartbreaking," he shared. "I also spent so much time in the suit on green screen, talking to nobody! It felt right, and the last shot I shot was the last shot of the series, Barry running, and pushing it in on him, just looking satisfied, and that was a cool last shot to get."

It wasn't all bad then, but fans were lucky to get a final season at all. The truncated 13-episode season was released at a time when shows like Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow were being cancelled by The CW as it looked to move away from pricey scripted dramas.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed he would be open to bringing Gustin into the DCU in a different role. The Flash movie has ensured that the Scarlet Speedster will remain benched for the foreseeable future, and when we do see him again, it will likely be Wally West in the suit.

Anything would have been better than what they did, one of the worst finales to a TV show ever.

@CrimsonComet40 - it minimized every season's big bad to junk time. I get why they did it. But just because they could doesn't mean they should.

“…and when we do see him again, it will likely be Wally West in the suit.”

Is there any basis or source for this conclusion?

@EducatedDefense - that's what I was gonna post...
We have zero word on a Flash movie or when it might even happen. Is West an Assumption?

If Snyder had just used Gaston as his Flash not only would his movies have been better but Muscietti’s Flash would have done much better.

@Astroman - If you just replaced the actor it still would have had significant issues. Speaking for myself though I probably would have at least seen it in the cinema. Unlike what we got, which I still haven’t seen.

@Astroman - no it would've flopped with Guston too. People stopped watching The Flash show. The viewership was at an all time low when it ended. Then it would've turned away people who never saw the show either because it would've felt like a continuation which no 1 watched. Biggest reason why Marvel will never make a Daredevil movie with Charlie Cox and when they do make a DD movie they will recast and do a full reboot.

There's no fixing Muschetti's film as its a product of the DCEU. The whole film needed to be reshot, which was impossible at that time.

@Cass - People don't realize that replacing an actor doesn't fix a movie's acript issues and bad CGI.

@TheJok3r - yeah, but you gotta admit....
Even before Ezra's troubles were made public, it was already the absolute worst casting for the Flash. They wanted to piggyback off of Iron Man mentoring Peter. So they foolishly tried to have Bats in Stark's role this completely messing up the character of Allen.

@lazlodaytona - I completely agree; the casting was terrible and the way he was written was even worse. The DCEU as a whole was just one big mess.

@TheJok3r - Replacing an actor never fixes anything on it's own, however even if folk were tiring of episodic Flash there is kinda no denying Gustin's version of the character was WAY more 'liked' than Ezra's ever was. Would it have made the film better if using Gustin instead or as one of the two versions of Flash, probably not, but I'd lay good odds it may have had slightly better BO numbers and better streaming hours with Grant in it.

@Apophis71 - Anyone would've done better than Ezra, for the simple fact that he was not hired due to being a good actor, but rather to tick a diversity box on the list.

@mastakilla39 - There's a very good chance Cox will show up as DD in either Spider-Man or one of these Avengers films. Marvel isn't worried about turning people away or they wouldn't have brought him back in the first instance

The show was past it’s prime by then and pretty much a shell of its former self but that just shot was done well & showed that Barry was happy with his life and would continue to fight the good fight even if we won’t see it.

The Flash sadly imo peaked in S1 and while S2 was good aswell , the series could never reach those heights again though it would get close to season 2 for me given the occasional story arc such as Bloodwork or even S4 via the Thinker imo etc.

Anyway the finale arc was mediocre at best and honestly should have been longer given Rick Cosnett’s return as Eddie Thawne but oh well ,Eric Wallace had to give screentine to the likes of Cecile & Allegra who were bland af smh.

Regardless , the Arrowverse had its highs & lows but it’ll always have a special place in my heart!!.

@TheVisionary25 -
I agree with you about the show. Season 1 was definitely the best in terms of quality, but season 2 wasn't too far behind. And I'd say season 2 was the show at its peak for comic book nerdiness.
But after that, outside of some episodes here and there (typically involving crossovers, or like some awesome singular episodes that had a nostalgic hope of quality in the past, like some Thinker eps), the show became a joke. I stopped watching the show after that 5 episode post Crisis crossover. I considered watching the Arrow episode in the final season, or the finale itself, but ended up not doing it. The clips I saw here and there for the final season though (outside of the Arrow ep) just weren't good. And seeing your comments about Cecile and Allegra makes it clear I made the right decision not watching the finale haha.
I imagine one day in the future I'll revisit the Arrowverse at large and watch till the end.

Also, I'll just say that I'm adamant that the Arrowverse at large ended with Superman & Lois. But yeah, major special place in my heart. More than a decade of my life. Something that will never happen again. Even now thinking about it makes me sad. Thinking of the fun of so many storylines, of the anticipation of episodes, of coming onto here afterwards to chat with you and others. That's what I did like every Tuesday or Wednesday haha. Arrow and Superman & Lois are some of my favorite shows.

@TheVisionary25 - I thought Arrowverse was truly at its peak with the Crisis on Earth X crossover. The writing and acting was fantastic, the story overall was engaging and fun, and there were real losses that affected every show.

@EternalKnight - agreed

I think that crossover was the best those shows ever had.

@HeavyMetal4Life - yep man

Those were the good old days coming here to discuss those shows and AOS , miss those times

The Arrow episode in the final season was by far the best imo.

HeavyMetal4Life - 10/28/2025, 2:38 PM
@EternalKnight - yeah, that crossover was the best one and certainly the best realized the whole verse ever was. Elseworlds and Infinite Earths were really good too, but not as great as Earth X was.

I will say though, the lead up to Infinite Earths, with some scenes in Flash and the entire final season of Arrow up to that point, that was something special. Amazing stuff.

@TheVisionary25 - the good old days! Yeah, the Arrowverse and AOS show discussions, what a time.

I think it was in prep for the final season of S&L that I rewatched the final episode of Arrow again. So good. And of course the whole final season season (and finale) of S&L. Rewatched the finale the other month and it still hit HARD.
