DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Star Charlie Cox Reveals Who Was REALLY Responsible For The Show's Creative Overhaul

Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox has reflected on the show's creative overhaul during 2023's Hollywood strikes, and credits one of his co-stars with Marvel's decision to take the show back to basics.

2023's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes were good news for some movies and TV shows, and bad news for others. In the case of Daredevil: Born Again, Hollywood being shut down for several months proved to be hugely beneficial for the Disney+ series.

During that downtime, Marvel Studios realised that the series wasn't working. A new showrunner was enlisted, the pilot was reshot, and a myriad of changes followed. In fact, the only instalment of the 9-episode season that was left untouched was the divisive bank heist bottle episode.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 now promises to be very interesting, as what we see won't be a mashup of ideas from different creative teams. Instead, it's 100% showrunner Dario Scardapane's baby, no bad thing when he was responsible for adding everything from Bullseye to more costumed action and that unforgettable head-crushing scene to the Daredevil revival.

Screen Rant recently caught up with Matt Murdock actor Charlie Cox, and he revealed that there's one person, in particular, who deserves much of the credit for the show's creative overhaul: The Punisher himself, Jon Bernthal.

"What I heard was when they were then looking at the show and editing it and putting it together, that scene made it by one day," he said of the heated confrontation between Matt and Frank in episode 4. "And they showed that scene to some of the high-ups at Disney and Marvel, and they were like, 'This is great. This is the show we want to make.'"

"And that was part of the narrative behind shifting direction and continuing what we had done previously, which is, you know, tell a kind of very dark, sinister version of Daredevil."

"Jon [Bernthal] wrote most of that scene as well," Cox added. "So we are very grateful to him for potentially leading us back on track."

Perhaps the biggest change made to Daredevil: Born Again during this time was that Daredevil is now considered MCU "canon." In its previous form, the series essentially ignored the Netflix series and served as a soft reboot.

As for Bernthal's Frank Castle, he'll return in The Punisher Special Presentation and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, both of which are set to be released in 2026.

In Marvel Television's Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavours in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.

The series also stars Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, with Ayelet Zurer and Jon Bernthal. Season 2 additions include Krysten Ritter, Matthew Lillard, Lili Taylor, and Royce Johnson. Dario Scardapane is showrunner.

"A masterpiece of epic proportions, Daredevil: Born Again delivers a powerful, unmissable take on the Man Without Fear," we said in our review"Putting street-level heroics on the map in a way that promises to change the MCU forever, the show is sublime superhero storytelling on a whole new level."

All episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming on Disney+. Season 2 comes to the platform on March 4, 2026.

Bernthal is arguably the most one dimensional actor working today

Who cares? This series was utter dogshit and no amount of overhaul will save the mess that Season 1 created. Just reboot already.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@foreverintheway - Everyone who says "I hate everything" is lying to save their own ass and defend the mediocre slop they like. Just a couple hours ago, I was praising the new Chainsaw Man movie. I praised Florence Pugh as Yelena. Before that, I said I was excited for Stranger Things Season 5 and praised Season 4, and I can't count how many times I've praised horror this year on this very website.

So much for "The guy who hates literally everything"

@WalletsClosed - My opinion is you hate everything - how is that "lying to save their own ass and defend the mediocre slop they like" lmfao like "save my own ass" from what?! All your language is so hyperbolic you can't even have a normal conversation.

@foreverintheway - He is from Bizarro World. Whatever he likes is the thing normal people from our world would hate.

But sometimes he makes a nice point, like - "Everyone who says "I hate everything" is lying to save their own ass and defend the mediocre slop they like." The irony is he doesn't seem to realize that his subsequent attempts to exempt himself from that group are completely ineffective.

At least, unconsciously, he has made it clear by his own words that he prefers Snyder's mediocre movies and is pathetic on the site just to justify his ego.

@SpiderParker - You're absolutely obsessed with me and Snyder. You can't take Gunn's cock out your mouth for a couple seconds. Boo hoo, I didn't like his garish, childish, campy, plot hole filled, badly acted, poorly directed, cgi slop of a mess and liked another directors movie's. Are you gonna cry?

@SpiderParker - "Whatever he likes is the thing normal people from our world would hate."

Most people like Stranger Things, liked the new Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer movies, liked Sinners and Weapons, and more stuff that i've praised in the last week. You're projecting. Most people do NOT like OR care about Diaperman or else it would've made more money than a movie from 12 years ago.

@WalletsClosed - "You're absolutely obsessed with me and Snyder. You can't take Gunn's cock out your mouth for a couple seconds." they didn't actually say anything about Gunn - I think your response here says more about you than anyone else. You are actually obsessed with Gunn because you can't stop bringing him up when nobody else does - and let's face it, if Snyders movies were never cancelled you would have no personality. You are totally obsessed with Gunn and Snyder - constantly bringing up a movie universe thats been dead for years. Like, move on. Just move on from discussing movies as a hobby.

@WalletsClosed - "The irony is he doesn't seem to realize that his subsequent attempts to exempt himself from that group are completely ineffective."

But go on, keep trying to defend yourself. Everyone can see you're having a breakdown now that you've inadvertently called yourself out for liking mediocre movies and lying to save your own ass.

WalletsClosed - 10/27/2025, 2:41 PM
@foreverintheway - Lol at you completely disregarding my other comments to talk about Snyder or Gunn. Most of my comments aren't even about them. You people see what you want to see. I only post about them if the article talks about them. YOU people need to move on and stop bitching and crying about Snyder everytime you get.

Now how about you respond to what I said about me praising multiple things in just the last 5 hours. Or is "everything" just what YOU like?

More projection from you. I'm not "exempting" myself from any group. I liked the Snyderverse. Are you going to continue crying about me liking the Snyderverse? Why did you avoid my comment about Stranger Things, Chainsaw Man, Weapons, Demon Slayer, and Sinners? Does that not fit your narrative that I "hate everything"?

@WalletsClosed - You named three things you don't hate - yet your comments on this site are overwhelmingly OVERTLY negative. It's not even like you don't like things - that would be fine. But you hate it with an energy that's absolutely toxic to yourself.
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 10/27/2025, 3:01 PM
@WalletsClosed - Are they comic book movies? Are you not on a website about comic book movies? And what weight does your proclamation that you like these things have, when all you have done is very clearly state that you dislike everything this site is about except Snyder's movies?

BTW, I noticed how everything you supposedly like is actually very dark. Are you going through a teenage phase, or do you have the capacity to even appreciate anything that's not dark and gritty?

@foreverintheway - "But you hate it with an energy that's absolutely toxic to yourself."

Your opinion. I'm not "overtly negative". I criticize stuff I don't like. Simple as that.

"You named three things you don't hate"

I talked about a numerous amount of things I liked in the past 48 hours on this site alone. You're lying
WalletsClosed
WalletsClosed - 10/27/2025, 3:32 PM
@SpiderParker - Yes, Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer are comic book movies. Just Japanese comics.

"when all you have done is very clearly state that you dislike everything this site is about except Snyder's movies?"

I've never said this and you just lied and made this up for no reason. Congrats I guess?

"BTW, I noticed how everything you supposedly like is actually very dark. Are you going through a teenage phase, or do you have the capacity to even appreciate anything that's not dark and gritty?"

My favorite piece of media ever is One Piece, an adventure that's dark at times but I love it for it's comedy and (pre timeskip especially) vibes between the characters. The main character Luffy, is one of the most lighthearted, goofy, kind, and loving characters i've ever seen and he's one of my favorites ever. I love the Superman character. I liked Guardians 1, Into the Spiderverse, Spider-Man 1 and 2, and numerous others. Just because I don't like slop that overtly panders to 6 year olds does not mean I don't like stuff that's not "dark and gritty".

@WalletsClosed - "Dude has been following me and crying about me not like Supershit for weeks now."

That's quite funny. I never asked you to like it. In fact, when was the last time I defended Gunn? I have only stated facts that you butcher in every article. You really think I have an agenda like you?

News Flash: I'm not a Gunn fan. I'm a CBM fan. Most of Gunn's previous movies are a tad overrated, especially The Suicide Squad, but he delivered a better take on Superman than Snyder, and I will take it. He may not be the greatest, but he is certainly a lot better than Snyder.

And have you even seen me saying Peacemaker is all that? I haven't even watched the first season. You think I like Gunn? Nice assumption. Regarding the whole Gunn V Snyder, I only care about Superman, a character Snyder butchered big time. The Flash from the Snyderverse flopped, yet have you ever seen me bring down Andy Muschietti for bringing us DCU Batman? The Suicide Squad is overrated and also flopped, yet I gave Gunn benefit of doubt for Superman.

When any of them fail, I will give them a second chance, but I'll call them out if the next one fails as well. But only one of us always hates things before they even come out and lacks the capacity to give the benefit of the doubt. I'm not wearing rose-tinted glasses like you for the Snyderverse. I'm just a realist.

@SpiderParker - "When any of them fail, I will give them a second chance"

The DCU has failed 3 times already and I've said multiple times that I'll give Lanterns a shot. But that doesn't fit your garbage narrative and your "fake" facts. Yes, you have an agenda. I've seen you cry about Snyder posting pictures. How sad are you?

Huh , I’m confused because didn’t Bernthal refuse to be in the original version of Born Again so if this was pre-overhaul then how was he there?.

I guess Charlie most likely means that this is post overhaul and during them editing & such the show together , they saw that scene and wanted to make the show more akin to that which makes more sense imo (and I’m glad that they went in that direction since it’s a great scene).

Also Bernthal apparently having written most of that interaction makes me even more excited for the Punisher special since he’s co-writing that!!.

Anyway , I still felt DD:BA S1 was solid so looking forward to S2!!.
