Warner Bros. Heir Compares Paramount Deal To "A Shotgun Wedding With Your Dumb Cousin"

The descendant of Jack Warner, filmmaker Gregory Orr, has weighed in on last night's shocking development, and it's safe to say that he does not foresee positive things for anyone but Paramount...

Last night, the bombshell news that Netflix had decided to pull out of the battle for Warner Bros. Discovery hours after the David Zaslav-led media company’s board declared Paramount's new bid a “superior proposal” left the entire industry reeling.

Though there was obviously some apprehension about Netflix taking ownership of WBD, a lot of people viewed it as the lesser of two evils.

Filmmaker Gregory Orr, the descendant of Jack Warner, has now weighed in (via THR), and he admits to being alarmed at the prospect of Paramount Skydance's David Ellison taking charge, especially as it pertains to the number of job losses that could come to pass due to duplication of roles.

Though Orr was initially sceptical about Netflix's offer and the possibility (let's be honest, likelihood) of shorter theatrical windows, he now believes that the streamer "offers Warner Bros. the strongest opportunity to thrive as a storied creator and distributor of world-class entertainment.”

“As to Paramount and Ellison, I don’t hear a good argument for why they should buy Warner Bros. Discovery except that they will benefit from it," he went on. "Paramount offers very little in global streaming or cash reserves or income compared to Netflix.”

“The deal with Netflix was a good marriage,” Orr added, noting that Warner “merging with Paramount Skydance is like a shotgun wedding with your dumb cousin. I fear for the health of the kids.”

Orr is far from the only high-level figure to voice their concerns. A veteran regional studio head who preferred to remain anonymous tells Deadline:

“Just the debt repayment schedule alone doesn’t bear thinking about. If Netflix don’t think it makes sense at that price, then what genius at Paramount thinks they can make it work? It’s very easy to make savings by cutting budgets and people, it’s much harder to organically and systematically grow a business. Paramount’s modus operandi has been the former for years under Viacom. Netflix on the other hand have shown there is another and better way. There’ll be more blood than in Iron Lung, and more BS from exhibition talking of their great friends and colleagues on the studio side whilst not only stabbing Warner employees in the back, but pushing them down the stairs at the same time.”

“Get ready for 30 rehashed franchise movies a year generated by Oracle AI, with no-one left to market them. But don’t fear: theatrical will keep their precious windows to showcase Transformers vs Superman 8.”

According to more than one well-placed source, the Paramount deal was only made possible due to equity from Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia, and, needless to say, these were not charity donations.

“These are important questions to be asking,” said one studio vet based overseas. “We may never know the answers, but the idea that Middle East sovereigns will own such large pieces of the U.S. (and global) media is shocking. We’re just inured to it all after a year plus of Trump madness.”

Still, not everyone views the Paramount deal as a bad thing.

“Of course everyone would prefer that Warner Bros stayed stand-alone, but that won’t happen," said one head of a leading European film distribution company. "Paramount’s acquisition is better than that of Netflix because at heart David Ellison is a producer — he likes filmmakers.”

They wanted CNN. Now they'll never be able to pay back this money lol they're gonna reboot every single IP that made the slightest bit of money.. I wanted Netflix to fight until the corrupt DOJ denied them. Now they're going to buy the scraps after Ellison breaks his shiny new toy. Or maybe this doesn't happen because IT'S A MONOPOLY

@bobevanz - if Paramount wanted CNN, they would've just bought the Global Linear Network. Netflix only had interest in Studios & Streaming anyway

@ThorArms - Yeah. Hardly any. Mission Impossible, Sonic the Hedgehog, Top Gun, Jack Ryan, Naked Gun, Indiana Jones, and the pre-Avengers MCU are all I can think of.

And maaaybe Tranformers and TMNT if I'm not being overly critical.

@ThorArms - There isn't any track record to judge Paramount right now....the new owners just took over last year.However....pulling the UFC and now WB is massive.

@InfinitePunches - But they did screw these two franchises up? Rise of the Beasts and Bumblebee didn't make anything near what the first Transformers movie made.

TMNT? What?! Are we seriously under the belief that Paramount didn't go ahead and greenlight THE BLUE DOOR script that was floating around with Michael Bay producing? Out of the Shadows also completely shuttered any future for a live-action movie up until just recently.

Also let's be real here, the most truly successful franchises to some degree for Paramount have been:

Mission Impossible (which is making less and less now)
Top Gun 2 (NOW a "franchise")
Sonic
Star Trek

Naked Gun died off and was just rebooted, Indiana Jones they don't even have the rights for anymore so that's pointless, same with The Avengers and pre-Avengers movies. So no...I really can't think of a single franchise Paramount haven't screwed up in some shape or form.

@InfinitePunches - I hope they capitalize on the most underutilized franchises. With 56 short stories and four novels, Sherlock Holmes has the potential to be a film franchise similar to 007.

Tobias Menzies could be a great Sherlock Holmes for Paramount.

@Irregular - They did well with Marvel when they had it. And they're doing well with Sonic, which is basically a superhero franchise nowadays. I think they'll do well with DC.

@Irregular - Can you think of any franchise ever that hasn't been screwed up by some studio or other at some point?
Irregular

@InfinitePunches - They didn't do anything with Marvel though, they only were "distributors" while Marvel Studios acted independently. Even then, they gave up the distribution rights to Disney, so again...Not really doing well.

I did name Sonic, which is ONE franchise.

Hard to say they will do well with DC when hardly anybody in nearly 15 years has done right by DC...but sure...you think that...

@ObserverIO - That wasn't the point the argument to whether or not other studios screw up their franchises though. The point is whether or not Paramount is successful at said franchises. If they felt they did such a good job with what they had, they wouldn't be trying to strengthen their portfolio. Like how they want to make P+ more "compelling to subscribers"

So much for Sonic and friends not being "compelling enough"

Warner Bros. as a studio is doomed if this goes through. Their employees are more likely to be fired, and they are the stronger studio. The debt that Paramount is going to have to shoulder is going to be crushing. They will probably try to manage that by leaning heavily into AI, putting actors and crew jobs in jeopardy. Not to mention the right-wing ass-kissing that they are going to impose on their news division is just going to cause them to lose more money. This is such a mess. Trump/MAGA does to entertainment what he did to his con artist businesses, and now the country...sends it spiraling into decline.

Isn’t Paramount already struggling?.

They are also suppose to reimburse Netflix for the deal so idk how they can afford all this if they aren’t doing that well.

Anyway you can bet your ass they are gonna try to save money anyway they can by cutting jobs like it’s a bloodbath!!.

@tmp3 - I think it's the opposite. It gives respect to HBO Max for Paramount to to not parade around wearing it's brand. I hope they do the same thing for 'Warner Bros.'
