Warner Bros. Animation, DC, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have announced that a multi-part animated adaptation of the iconic Batman '90s comic book storyline that introduced Bane, Knightfall, is in development.

Directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams, the first part - Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall - is currently in production and is slated to release at some point next year. It's believed that three more movies will follow.

The Knightfall comic book saga consisted of three parts — Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd — and saw the Dark Knight meet his match in the form of the super-strong villain known as Bane, who managed to "break the Bat." With Bruce Wayne out of action, the far more violent and unstable Azrael took up the mantle of Batman.

This marks the first time Knightfall will be adapted in full, although Christopher Nolan did use elements of the story for The Dark Knight Rises, with Tom Hardy's Bane breaking Batman's (Christian Bale) back after their one-sided brawl.

Bane creator Chuck Dixon had the following to say about the debuting villain in a 2012 interview.

"Knightfall was in the planning for a few months and we were all working on the issues leading up to it. We all understood that we wanted to create a brand new villain to break Batman’s back but nothing had been discussed about him. Denny thought we should come out the other end of the stunt with a new bad guy. A lot of the elements of the event had been worked out around the creation of this new character but no ideas had been put forward by anyone about who this new badass would be. We were treating him as a blank that needed to be filled in."

"We knew we would basically be replacing KGBeast in the role of the brutal- but-intelligent bad guy. KGBeast had become old news with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The KG-Beast used to be. We also knew that he would be powered by Venom, the addictive super-steroid that Denny had come up with for an arc in Legends of the Dark Knight. And Denny promoted the idea of creating new villains with each event in the hopes of lightning striking. I liked this idea because I always thought DC’s villain bench was weak unlike Marvel where there are hundreds of great bad guys to choose from. I think that’s still true today especially with DC’s penchant for knocking off characters left and right."

The official plot synopsis for Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall reads: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

The voice cast has not been announced. Rick Morales serves as Supervising Producer alongside Producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau. Sam Register and Michael Uslan are Executive Producers.

This could be great if it were done live action. But since it's animated, 90% of the general audience will never see it.

Too bad. The new DCU desperately needs a great Batman.

@DocSpock - Bane is unfortunate because he's best done as a down the line kind of villain after other rogues have been established so that means he's best done in something long running which we've yet to see outside of animation.

Even animation has been so-so because long running things like Batman TAS kinda brought him down

This has been rumored for a few years now, but many assumed Gunn canceled it once he took over DC; thankfully that wasn't the case. I really hope we can eventually get an adaption of No Man's Land sometime down the line.

Can anyone find a picture of Kimberly S. Moreau??? She's seemingly scrubbed from the internet. All I get is a missing person from decades ago.

I wonder what the animation style is going to be and how faithful it’s going to be compared to the comics.

One things for sure, the animation will look terrible. Would be nice to see them invest some big money into animation. Also thought this could be a live action trilogy

So they're just never going to do Kingdom Come?

@LeBronStan - They were; it was cancelled by Gunn when he took over. It's believed that he did so due to having plans to adapt it into live action.

@TheJok3r -@TheJok3r - dumbest thing ive ever heard. If he tries to do kingdom come with a young superman it kinda defeats the main point. Dont get me wrong id love for a Live action Kingdom come. It's my favorite limited series in DC. Alex Ross's art is a league of his own. Id love for a senior citizen DC film lol

Batman - Micheal Keaton or if someone new Jeff Bridges
Joker - Jack Nicholson or Willem Defoe
Superman - Josh Brolin or Jon Hamm
Lex - Tim Robbins
Norman McKay - Daniel day lewis
Magog - Tom Hardy
Wonder Woman - Keri Russel or Angelina Jolie
Specter - Brad Pitt
Captain Marvel - Alan Ritchson
Power girl - Scarlet Johansson
Dick Grayson - Bradley Cooper
Alan Scott - Tommy lee jones
Aquaman - russel Crowe
Wally west - Not sure hes kinda just a red blur and I dont remember him talking much lol

@NonPlayerC - or mark hammil for joker, forgot the obvious choice lol

TheJok3r - 10/11/2025, 12:17 PM
@NonPlayerC - I don't think it would be with the current cast of characters, but rather its own thing that potentially crosses over into the main universe.

The next DC Animated movie DTV should be a multi-part adaptation of 52.

If you count up all the animated projects since Superman: Doomsday (so the 3-part Crisis would count as 1 not 3) there have been exactly 51.

So now would be the perfect time to do 52. Have that come out before Knightfall.

Cool!!.

Interested to see the animation style in this but more curious to see who the voice cast will be.

I know the creative team was involved in the Tomorrowverse films , some of which that I saw I enjoyed but I think it’s rushed nature hurt it.

Anyway , I bet Part 1 ends with Bruce’s back being broken!!.

I just don't trust DC animated projects anymore, the writers can't help but insert their modern day sh1t to try and claim they actually committed something to the film instead of sucking up their pride and staying true to the source material, It never feels natural, they either don't give a shit or simply don't have the talent to make it work within the time that stories were written. This film being Multi-Part makes it dead in the water for me, not because the story calls for it because it does, it's dead in the water because the last time they made a Multi-Part film, it was 3 movies dragged out with pointless filler, with the animation budget of one hour long television episode.

If it was 2012, I'd be excited. They've wasted so many great stories on shitty adaptations since.

@grif - Surprisingly, they're all shit, the 3 part film being the worst. That lantern film is the biggest f**k you to Hal Jordan fans since Gunn chose a 60 year old dude to play Hal at the begining of his new universe.

Hopefully it's good. Crisis on Infinite Earths was... not great. Not bad, just not as great as it should have been.

A 3 parter would be ambitious, but I *extremely doubt* DC go that route. They only do 2-parters even if it's to the detriment of the story, like in the Death of Superman-Rise of the Supermen duology.

I hope DC is back to doing stand-alone adaptations with their own unique looks that try to capture the vibe of the art-style. Like in Dark Knight Returns it's not exactly Frank Miller's art, but it gets the vibe across.

Finally. The animated adaptation I have been commenting about for probably a decade at this point. My favourite Batman story. I'll watch it that's for sure, I just hope I'll enjoy it.
