Batman: Arkham Origins: Do's and Don'ts

With the prequel to Arkham City announced, what should go down in this stroll around Gotham?

And the fanboy’s go crazy. Or at least, I did. When was that? Oh yeah, when they announced freaking ARKHAM ORIGINS!!! I mean seriously, who can’t be excited for this? This is my third most anticipated game of the year now. First is (or was) Injustice, second is LEGO Marvel Superheroes, and now, Batman: Arkham Origins.

So what’s the purpose of this article? Well, you see, Arkham Origins could either kick or suck my posterior. Also, I want this game to improve upon Arkham City. So I’m going to list my Do’s and Don’ts for Batman: Arkham Origins.

Let’s begin.

DO’S

#1:
Let’s see the Industrial District in work

One of my favorite (if more difficult) environments in Arkham City, the Industrial District was full of surprises (who could forget Scarecrow’s boat?) and what felt at some points like a post-apocalyptic wonderland. Or wasteland. But that needs to change in Arkham Origins. This place can be run down, but it has to be working.

It has been announced that Both New Gotham (past the wall) and Old Gotham (Arkham City) are accessible and explorable in this new game. So obviously we’re going to have to see some industry in the, well, Industrial District. And why not? I’m sure that even Batman can enjoy some time on a merry-go-round, or take down some drug lord hiding out at a shipping yard. Maybe you grapple on to moving cranes? Nothing’s impossible. Except Batman dying.

#2:
Another Bruce Wayne segment

Even the greatest heroes need a break, and Batman is no different. Some may consider being a billionaire playboy a break, but when you look at the taxes... let’s be glad Bruce has Alfred. But when you played as Bruce Wayne in Arkham City, it was awesome. It was Assassin’s Creed type climbing, sliding, ducking, all while telling Alfred about your predicament. I even made an Arkham City challenge called Bruce Wayne Mode, I liked it that much. And I want to see that return.

I was a little disappointed that you couldn’t change back to Bruce, but I did understand it. But here, maybe, just maybe, Bruce will come back. And maybe, it will be for more than just one outing.

#3:
Welcome back to the madhouse

I’m not saying we have to have a whole level dedicated to the Asylum. I’m not saying that we even have to explore it. I just want to visit. Check up on the place. Maybe, after a side mission, we can ‘escort’ the villain to the Asylum. Possibly Blackgate. I just want to see the place again.

#4:
The Gordon family

I want Jim to be greying, not white haired. I want Batman and Jim to meet for the first time. I want Bat-Signal meetings, and some at Gordon’s own house. But above all, I want Barbara Gordon walking. I will not take no for an answer, you give me these things. You give everyone these things. Then, you have my trust to make a Batman game.

But, in all seriousness, who doesn’t want to see the Gordon family? Or at least Jim and Barbara. Barbara has yet to be seen, and I want this to be her proud debut, on two legs. These are Batman’s early days, and there had to have been a Batgirl at some point. I’m not saying I want Batgirl in this game, maybe a sequel, but not here. It’s too early for Batman to get a sidekick. Maybe for the finale...? But never mind that.

I would also like to see a younger Jim Gordon, with greying hair. And to experience meetings between the two? That would be great. I do hope that it is included in Arkham Origins.

#5:
Side missions that aren’t ‘do this / do that’

Okay, I’l say it. The side missions in Arkham City pissed me off. They were nothing like they should have been. It was either, beat these guys up, blow this stuff up, or find the bullet’s point of impact. They weren’t fun, and just reused fights and conundrums in the Main Story. So when I heard that there were side missions in Arkham Origins, I was skeptical.

Tearaway, I beg of you, please give the side missions story, character, and develop them. Don’t make them simple ‘do this’ missions. Make them fun and exciting! Give Batman a reason to do them, and make it cool in the process. Please. For the fans.

#6
Include the entire Falcone family

After so many allusions to the Falcones in Arkham City, and Alberto Falcone being announced, how can you not include Carmine, or any other member of his mob? The family would be great for a side mission after you meet Penguin and Alberto. Multiple mission side missions. Like up there. You know, north? ^^^. Okay, glad we got that covered.

And those are the Do’s. Let’s move on, shall we?

DON’TS

#1
Joker cannot be included!

This is the one don’t, where, if it is included in the game, I will literally scream. I will pick up the disc, put it in, play through the game, and scream. The Joker. Cannot. Be. Included. He was a main character in the last two games, he stole the show, yes, but he can’t be in there. Maybe the Red Hood in Ace Chemicals, but that’s all I’m going to allow.\

If we see the clown’s glass glow smile and signature laugh, I’ll go berserk. Mark Hamill said he was retiring from the Joker. And goddammit, I know he helped the other Arkham games, but I don’t want him in there. He had his time to shine, Hamill has left, and frankly, I don’t want to see him again. I’m serious. He had his glory, but give another villain the spotlight.

#2
Ra’s al Ghul as one of Black Mask’s assassins

Ra’s al Ghul was awesome. He was a complete surprise to me in Arkham City, and that was a very good thing. He stole the show in each scene he was in, and I just wish there was more. But he’s not the kind to be hired.

We know that Black Mask has hired eight assassins to kill Batman, but Ra’s cannot be one of those assassins. It’s out of character, no matter how great it would be to see him. So let’s wait until Arkham City’s sequel until the awesomeness continues.

#3
Make buildings like the GCPD Department and Wayne Tower inaccessible

This one explains itself. There were a few landmarks in Arkham City that we couldn’t get into, and I didn’t like that. Maxie Zeus’ club, Ace Chemicals, exedra, exedra. While I don’t expect the two listed above to be non explorable, I would hope that Wayne Manor, the Steel Mill, and Museum are open.

And there go the Don’ts. Ready for the last group?

MAYBE’S

#1
Batmobile driving

It’s been announced that the Batwing can be used for fast travel in Arkham Origins, but it’s non drivable. What about the Batmobile? Now that Batman isn’t constrained by the limits of a wall, can we use the infamous car? I’m honestly not sure what to think. It would be cool, and upgrades for the car would be nice, but... I’m just not sure. It would be good to have a second mode of transportation in a sandbox game so large.

Yet, something tells me no. I’m not sure if the novelty would wear thin, if it would change the formula too much, or if it would keep players from gliding. All of the above, perhaps. So, I’ll leave it as the solitary maybe.

So what do you think? Agree? Disagree? Did I miss anything? Tell me below! Down there. The opposite of this symbol: ^^^. That’s where it is.

Until next time,

Hope Joker is seen as Red Hood, would be cool to see Arkham-version of his origins. Ra's as one of the assasins; maybe if done right, Talia as one of the assasins; very likely.

Operating The Batmobile or Batwing would be cool. I just wanna see Robin and Batgirl as playable characters.Either in game or as a DLC. If eight of the worlds best assassins are after Bats he may need some backup.

Agree about the joker, dont want to see him anywhere near the game. However I wouldn't mind him as the red hood, who's not insane and completely different from the joker character. He could be one of the assasins hired to kill batman, he ends up luring you to a chemical plant, after the fight he falls into a vat of chemicals, the factory explodes batman think's he dead, moves one. Then at the end of the game you see a hand come out and you hear a laugh. Would kind explain his decent to madness.

Also think that they should add enviromental elements and features to the game for example batman could smash someone's head into a window, or if an enemy is standing in water you could shock it with a stun gun and electrocute the goon and knock them out.

This Batman shouldn't be as dark, as in the other games. Not campy, but not dark and brooding. Have it somewhere in between, like in the TAS. This would leave room for a first encounter with the Joker, turning Batman into the dark and brooding version from the other games.

I don't imagine the batmobile will be able to traverse the environment if they intend on keeping the same area density as Arkham City. Not to mention there's a supposed snow storm in Gotham City, I imagine there'll be a lot of abandoned cars in the road. Who knows, we may be pleasantly surprised.

Haha nice, almost forgot about that.

Anyways I also agree Joker will be included. Think about it, why do you think they made a prequel instead of a sequel. To keep joker alive. Either that or they didn't have a story of how to follow up after that ending.

Nice post! Agree with a lot of things you're saying. Of course, we know now that Batman will be flying the Bat-Wing for quick travel instead of the Bat-Mobile, but thats okay.

The Joker probably is going to show as Red Hood. Would be cool for a final level to chase him through the Ace Chemical building, fighting thugs on every level until you reach him, but you know. He falls off the scaffold or whatever and into the chemicals. The last little clip should be him coming out of the chemicals just laughing, but we don't see his face.

Ocelot - 4/14/2013, 3:31 PM
@MrCBM56 probably because the sequel will be on the next gen consoles next year, which rocksteady are most likely developing which is why they're not on this game. This is pretty much a filler game, they're pretty much saying rocksteady is working on a bigger and better batman game for next gen consoles, it wont be out for a while, so we'll give you a similar batman game to arkham city to play with until it comes out

Am I the only one thinking that after this, they may make a sequel to this prequel rather than Arkham City? I'd be okay with it, but I just want to know what happens after AC.

I hope they have 1st robin and 1st batgirl. Assassins should be: Deathstroke, Lady Shiva, KG Beast, Blockbuster, Deadshot, Hush, Ventriloquist/Scarface, Mad Dog, ManBat, and Firefly.

I don't think the Bat mobile would be a good idea, because if its free roam Gotham city, theres probably going to be people on the sidewalk, unless its eerily dead like Arkham City. That means all the jackasses that buy the game will ignore the story, and go on a GTA inspired roadkill spree. Very Batman like.

I'm fine with the Joker showing up in any capacity. And Mark Hamill is awesome. Buttttt what I really want...is the stupid sequel game to Arkham City. I didn't want to wait. Now I have to play this game that doesn't follow up any threads from the previous game and...wait some more. I hate waiting as you can see.

They need to create this game on a different engine than the Unreal Engine because that engine is ugly to look at. Have more variety in weapons because Arkham City weapons were lackluster and only about 3 new one than Arkham Asylum. The gadgets in Arkham Asylum could do more than the ones in Arkham City.

Frankly, I can't find too much fault in Arkham City. I got all but 1 Riddler trophy and enjoyed the cameo side missions. It improved on Asylum, which I slso enjoyed. I'll wait until Origins is released to determine what I liked and disliked about, but hoping this or that is or isn't in it is more likely to leave you disappointed.

I think we will see the Joker in the game. Ever since hearing about the game I've been convinced that the Red Hood will be one of the hired assassins, that we'll fight him in Ace Chemicals, and that he'll fall into the chemicals. The Red Hood can be voiced by another actor who has a passing similarity to Mark Hamill's Joker's accent.

I reckon the Red Hood fight will be toward the end, and I have a really strong feeling that there'll be like a post credits scene where we see him get out of the chemicals, take off the hood, and see him as The Joker. They don't even need dialogue for this, or to necessarily even show the character's face if done right (the hair would give it away if we saw him from behind) - all they need to do is reuse a stock recording of Hamill performing Joker's laugh.

I mean, it's ARKHAM Origins - you gotta show the Joker in there in some way.

This was a fun article! I totally wanna see what you wanna see. More Bruce Wayne, a visit to Arkham, Barbara friggin Gordon- I want it all!
More than anything, I want a populated open world. I want to stop purse snatchers on the side, and have hobos ask, "was that the Batman?" I want to feel like an urban legend.

There are some things I'm not so sure about. While I agree Ra's Al Ghul was a nice surprise in AC, him and Hugo were the main villains, so just like Joker, I want to see someone new. Speaking of Joker, the Red Hood is a great idea.

One thing though: would it make sense for Batman, a vigilante, to be walking around a police station?

Also, gotta have the Riddler challenges. Love those.
A must for these single-player games.

(surprised multiplayer wasn't on your DON'T list)

I was thinking more along the lines of sneaking into the police station, or meetings with Gordon in a security room. Also, it has been confirmed that Gotham is fully populated and you can stop random street crimes. If you succeed, the GCPD will start to trust Batman again.

Has anyone stopped to think whether The Riddler will be in this game. Remembering this is set years before Asylum...and we all know that although it's optional to chase after, The Riddler aspect of an Arkham game is always heavily present. Will Riddler be in this I wonder...

Would be cool to see references to the JL, to set up the silver age game that has been teased. Also would be cool to see a post-credits scene that sets up a game that takes place after Arkham City.

Wasn't there a promotional stand that had Joker, Scarecrow, Bane, Black Mask, Dead Shot etc on it?

As a prequel you can count Hush out, which is a shame because i was really looking forward to him.

we should get some day action. The problem with the other games was that it was always fricken night. i kknow thats when Batman comes out but why can;'t we get some daytime interaction? Its BRUCE [frick]INN WAYNE! You expect me to believe he doesn't get mugged or his house isn't getting robbed? In truth I too want to play as Bruce.
