Marvel Studios' next Spotlight series, Wonder Man, is heading to Disney+ this December, and we're hoping to see the first full trailer during Marvel TV's panel at New York Comic-Con this Saturday.

Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II appeared to confirm that we will be seeing something from the show at the event when he shared a fun new title logo earlier this week, and we now have a first look at the Wonder Man NYCC display.

The items in the display appear to be props from the "Wonder Man" show-within-a-show that Simon Williams is believed to be auditioning for. If you look closely at the lunchbox, you'll notice artwork depicting a completely different actor in-costume as the hero.

Possible spoilers follow.

The prevailing theory is that Williams will land the lead role in a reboot of a classic '70s Wonder Man series, which would allow the actual show to poke some fun at Hollywood's penchant for revisiting and revamping old properties - and race-swapping characters.

We have heard that this show was developed as a superhero satire and “a love letter to LA and the industry," with a tone similar to shows such as Silicon Valley, Dave, and Barry

Marvel's Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, recently confirmed the show's the episode count, while also giving Wonder Man his endorsement as "the best show no one's ever seen."

"Wonder Man is eight episodes. It's a very new flavor for Marvel," the exec tells Collider. "It's straight from the minds of Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest. Honestly, it is one of my favorite things ever. I think it's the best show no one's ever seen, and I’m very excited to see the audience reaction to it. I think it's a love letter to what we do as filmmakers. It's a love letter to acting as a profession, and it's a very sincere, beautiful show."

As for the episode run-times, Winderbaum says they will vary.

"There's a little bit of some streaming leeway in the episode runtimes, so I think our shortest episode is 20-something, and our longest is, like, 40-something."

Along with Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, Wonder Man will star Demetrius Grosse as Simon's brother Eric Williams, aka the Grim Reaper, along with Sir Ben Kingsley as the returning Trevor Slattery. Byron Bowers is also on board in an undisclosed role. We have heard that Ed Harris, Bob Odenkirk, and Courtney Cox have been enlisted for cameos, but only Harris has been confirmed (he'll play Simon's agent Neal Saroyan).

Stella Meghie (The Photograph) had been tapped to direct multiple episodes. Cretton - who we now know will also helm Spider-Man 4 - will reportedly direct the first two episodes and is on board as a writer along with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 30 Rock, and Community scribe Andrew Guest, who will also serve as showrunner.

So nothing like Wonder Man then? - they just took his name, the fact he tried to be an actor in the comics, and did the story they wanted to do

@Radders - Well if the Joker movie taught us anything, it's that slapping a brand on an unrelated story will yield a billion dollars.

@IAmAHoot - @Termin8r I was more along the Tom Brady path... seems Marvel uses his likeness often. Lookup the Arcade1up Marvel Pinball machine. Tell me that isnt Tom Brady as Captain American on the marquee.

It’s a shame they used AI to make that art for the lunchbox.

More and more this show proves to be retarded and unnecessary. Sounds like it was only made to go after fans online for… heaven forbid… wanting their comic book shows and movies to look like the comics they grew up with.

I think it’s time to accept the fact that the old Marvel is done and everything we liked about the early MCU is gone. They are a completely different studio/company now and the only thing that remains from the original MCU is the name.

@Odekahn - explain your observation about this show, without having seeing it, without sounding like an incel. this should be good.

@supermanrex - It looks awful. That's our observation

@supermanrex - it’s one of, if not THE, last under the last regime focus. So it’s quite reasonable to assume this will suck.

But I always leave my hand slightly relaxed to it being a surprise hit.

my only concern for this show is will it actually feel like its in a superhero world or be artistic driven and ashamed of its super hero roots.

@supermanrex - I definitely think it might be more satire then Superhero show but there’s still been an element of the latter there

Maybe instead of poking fun at the character, they could have taken it seriously. Wonder Man has a decent enough backstory. I would have somehow used him to give White Vision his emotions back. That would have made the triangle perfect and opened up a lot of stories.

I think it was already confirmed that Yahya’s Simon Williams auditions and secures the lead of a superhero film remake called “Wonder Man” while also somehow getting superpowers in real life aswell which is an interesting premise imo.

Anyway , I’m intrigued by this and looking forward to the show!!.

I think this is clever, but also very calculated. The way it looks to me Marvel Studios knew there would be push-back in their adaption of Wonder Man and decided 'okay, we'll push back first before the criticism'. The Wonder Man from the comics that fans know DOES exist in the MCU, but that character is from a fictional TV show from the past. This new adaptation is a meta way to show how Hollywood (& Marvel Studios) is remaking and modernizing the character. I even expect there to be an inhouse explanation to explain why the producers are changing the race of the character. VERY meta and smart but very forced.

I have two problems with this. One, there is no connection to any other superhero, like Vision and Scarlet Witch from the comics. I don't count Trevor Slattery who is an original MCU character. Ironic, Trevor played a fake Mandarin in Iron Man 3 and now is in a show that at least starts off with an actor wanting to play a fictionized Wonder Man. Frankly, Wonder Man's connection to Vision was never actually going to happen in the MCU. Joss Whedon remade Vision's origin and replaced Simon Williams brainwaves with Jarvis' AI. So, this Wonder Man has NO connection to any superhero existing in the MCU.

Two, while I don't have a problem with Wonder Man being race-swapped, I wish Destin Daniel Cretton went with an Asian actor. To me, Wonder Man is NOT a top tier character like Peter Parker's Spider-Man or even Doctor Strange. Most people don't even know the character. So why not open the casting net for all actors for the role. My problem is after all the talk Destin Daniel Cretton made over the casting of Simu Liu for Shang-Chi and how he shouldn't be the first and last Asian actor in the MCU, he didn't cast an Asian lead for a television show he produced. The opportunity was there, and he didn't take it which makes his previous comments disingenuous.

Anyhow, I just get the feeling Marvel is doing another Mar-Vell all over again. Write off the original version from the comics fans know and get right to the MCU version of the character. In the case of Mar-Vell, Kevin Feige went straight to Carol Danvers so he could adapt Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel, the character he really wanted. I don't know. Perhaps I'm just over Marvel's recent casting decisions. To me, it all feels forced and inauthentic to what makes the characters special from the comics. A Wonder Man with no connective tissue to other characters is meaningless to me. Why should I care?
