Nova Writer Confirms Rich Rider; Says Movie "Would Have To Reckon With" Thanos' Decimation Of The Nova Corps

Though he was careful not to give too much away, Nova writer Michael Waldron has dropped a few big hints about what fans can expect from Richard Rider's long-awaited debut...

Earlier this year, a rumor circulated online that Michael Waldron was working on Marvel's long-awaited Nova series. The report appeared to be debunked, but it later came to light that Waldron had indeed been tapped to pen a movie, not a streaming show.

Waldron wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and also served as showrunner on Loki. He is involved with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

While speaking to The Wrap about season 2 of Chad Powers, Waldron was asked how work on Nova is progressing.

"I don’t know if I can say anything about anything I’m doing with Marvel. But I will say, I love Nova. I love Rich Rider. However we expand the cosmic side of the MCU will be really cool."

When the interviewer pushed for a little more information, Waldron obliged - while stopping short of actually confirming that he's boarded the project!

"Annihilation is, I mean, I guess that’s the go-to, right? But the character spans a lot of generations, and I think maybe that’s why it’s taken some time to get him to the screen: figuring out where do you start that story? Do you start him on Earth? Do you start in space, as part of the Nova Corps? Whoever does it, I hope they do a good job."

Finally, Waldron was asked if Thanos decimating the Nova Corps to get his hands on the Power Stone would be addressed.

"They would have to reckon with that. Yeah," he responded.

Marvel Studios finally confirmed plans to introduce Nova to the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2022, and since then, there have been conflicting reports about which medium the project was being developed for. It seems Sabir Pirzada was writing the script for a series, but the idea was ultimately shelved, and Waldron was brought on to tackle a new pitch.

The Nova movie is still in the very early stages of development, and aside from the few nuggets Waldron shared above, plot details are still under wraps. We had heard that Annihilus was going to be the villain of the series, but plans may have changed. It was also claimed that both Richard Rider and Sam Alexander would feature, but again, the idea may be completely reworked for the big screen.

The Nova Corps was introduced in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, which led to speculation that Rider would eventually find his way into the GOTG franchise. James Gunn showed little interest in the character, but the Nova film will most likely spin out from Thanos decimating most of the Corps in the build-up to Avengers: Infinity War.

Sam Alexander first appeared in the Marvel Point One one-shot in back in November 2011 before going on to lead his own series beginning in February 2013. The Arizona teen inherited the Nova helmet from his missing father and officially took up the mantle after being trained by Guardians of the Galaxy members Gamora and Rocket Raccoon.

“Waldron wrote Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness..”

@Gambito - it was a last minute decision and as far as I know, was a completely different movie when Raimi came on board. I don't envy anyone in that position. But he also wrote Loki so I'd give him a chance.

Did the snap happen when the reboot is finally here?

@ModernAudience - Any continuity from the old universe will alienate Gen Alpha and Beta.

Zoomers love the current Spider-Man but even that should be rebooted. I know that sounds insane considering how much it's made but it sounded insane to reboot the DCEU when Aquaman made a billy too. Yet they kept it going for 9 consecutive flops.
Don't let BND be the MCU's Aquaman. Recast everyone with a clean jump on point for all new viewers for the next couple of generations.
(us older generations will follow on anyway because we're already hooked)

Would have to be after Secret Wars. Since they really shit the bed with the Nova Corps in GotG.

Unless Spider-Man is in this, it won't make a [frick]ing dollar.

Half the posters on here don't even know who the [frick] NOVA is.

It's Phase Five Forever Bitches!!!

I really hope they take time to explore the inherent impact Thanos’ action had on marginalized communities throughout the universe

"Kid finds helmet..." is the oldest story there is.

It's hot, sunny and sand is blowing in the wind. A helmet is slowly becoming visible to our hero and he takes it to his dad. Dad says to ask Grandfather after dinner. ... Camp fire and story time starts... Time speeds up and we watch our evolution, even into space, with battles and finally zeroing in on Thanos. Que the music.

Cool , Waldron did well even if he didn’t confirm or deny anything…

I feel like you could approach Nova as it is two ways in that you make it a origin story for Richard Rider in that perhaps the Corp was experimenting with the Power Stone in order to soup themselves up for the future but they were decimated by Thanos before they could implement that power which was dubbed as “The Nova Force” into themselves hence that somehow escapes and finds itself a host on Earth in Richard Rider.

The other approach still has the experimentation angle but in this you have Rich Rider already be a Nova Corps member who survives Thanos’s decimation due to being the first subject to get the Nova Force and now has to rebuild the Corp with new people via that power such as Sam Alexander etc.

Anyway if/when it happens , I hope Waldron brings on his “Chad Powers” star Glen Powell to be the lead!!

Seems pretty obvious to me that the opening scene of any Nova project would need to be the Thanos attack on Xandar. I've always assumed that's why they cut it from Infinity War in the first place.

No one has given us the serious space fantasy in MCU.

Thor & GOTG is more fantasy than sci-fi.

Nova can take a different approach, going to places like Zenn-La and the Shi-ar Empire.

Interplanatary, diplomatic, action, drama. It could make us care.

Do the Human Rocket stuff with a cosmic ending based on the original run. Annihilation in a sequel.
