UPDATE: For the first time since Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened worldwide on July 31, The Odyssey has emerged triumphant, taking the #1 position at the worldwide box office during its eighth weekend in theaters.
With a global total of $45.96 million, Christopher Nolan's fantasy epic managed to beat the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios co-production's still-impressive $44.1 million haul.
What made the difference? While The Odyssey—which continues to benefit from IMAX screens—has just opened in Japan, there was simply higher-than-expected interest in both North America and international territories this weekend. As a result, it's now made $1.627 billion in total.
Don't feel too sorry for the web-slinger, though, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially passed $2.4 billion worldwide.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on course to web up between $22 million and $23 million at the U.S. box office over the long Labor Day weekend, keeping it at #1 for the sixth weekend in a row.
The movie is chasing history, having recently become only the second movie ever to reach $900 million in North America. In a matter of weeks, if not days, Spidey's latest solo outing will pass Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $936.6 million record to become the highest-grossing movie of all time domestically.
The Odyssey is making its mark, too, with a $16.4 million haul over four days, taking its U.S. haul to an impressive $588.1 million. A couple of days ago, Christopher Nolan's fantasy epic reached $1 billion internationally, an incredible feat.
Another big surprise has been the horror movie, Buddy. That's had an amazing hold during its second weekend, particularly with under-25s. It exceeded expectations when it opened last week, and has now made $7.4 million over four days, taking its domestic cume to $15.98 million. You can watch our interview with director Casper Kelly below.
Back to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the blockbuster is performing better than anyone could have expected. While the mystery surrounding Sadie Sink's character certainly helped build excitement, box office numbers like these point to repeat viewings and exceedingly strong word of mouth.
Can Avengers: Doomsday possibly hope to beat the web-slinger? We'll find that out early next year.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter that he may not have the power to control.
But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.
In our review, we concluded by saying, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day is everything fans could want. Emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, it’s an action-packed love letter to the comics and one of Spidey’s best big-screen adventures. Spider-Man has never been more amazing."
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.
