Supergirl Writer And Director Credit James Gunn For Lobo Cameo And Divisive Final Battle Song Choice

Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira and director Craig Gillespie have credited DC Studios boss James Gunn with two particularly divisive elements in the movie and reveal how Superman changed the script.

In an ideal world, Supergirl would have received the same response as Superman, been a modest box office hit (at the very least), and continued DC Studios' momentum. Instead, it's been a rough week for the movie, with so-so reviews and what's looking like a lower-than-expected opening weekend.

While some are already calling for DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn's head, others are a little more level-headed and want to see how things go with Lanterns, Clayface, and Man of Tomorrow first.

However, for anyone looking to point fingers for Supergirl's failings, it seems Gunn is responsible for two particularly divisive elements: Lobo's extended cameo and a final battle song choice recently described as "cringey."

Many reviews were critical of Jason Momoa's Lobo being shoehorned into Supergirl, though we'd be remiss not to mention that some have praised the former Aquaman actor as a highlight.

Lobo wasn't in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, and there aren't any similar characters from that he's replacing; he's a completely new addition to the story. Writer Tom King has previously said he pitched the bounty hunter for a role in his and Bilquis Evely's series, but Lobo being in this movie was a DC Studios decision, according to Ana Nogueira.

"That was also given to me. That was like my assignment: 'We want Lobo in the movie,'" she told Rolling Stone"So those were like the kind of little toys I was given, and I knew that Woman of Tomorrow was based on True Grit. And so I actually went back to the source, and I went back to True Grit."

"That’s when I was like, oh, that’s how Lobo fits in, because there’s Matt Damon’s character, and he’s the third entry point, the third character, the love-to-hate-to-love kind of guy," she added. "And then that’s how I was styling it, just as a Western, because I knew that’s what inspired [Woman of Tomorrow author] Tom [King]."

Nogueira started working on Supergirl before Superman landed in theaters, and Gunn's DCU plans understandably led to some changes.

"There were two major changes, which were notes from James, and one was that Superman isn’t known in the galaxy. In my first draft, she would go places and people would recognize Superman," the writer explained. "This Superman is new. He’s not out there saving worlds and planets. So he’s not known out there. This is her domain."

"And then the other note was to change from the comic that Kara is there when Krypton is destroyed, versus her being born on [the post-destruction planet fragment] Argo," Nogueira said. "Because the note was that — and I understand this — the Phantom Zone, all that takes over. It ends up taking over a screenplay. 'She got what? She’s stuck where? What occurred?'"

Director Craig Gillespie, meanwhile, revealed who chose one of Supergirl's most divisive needle drops: Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" with female vocals by Kelty Greye and KidMotel. That plays over the final battle and has been widely ridiculed on social media after leaked clips first circulated earlier this week.

The filmmaker confirmed that Gunn picked the song, adding that "there were probably about 45 songs that went against that scene." Revealing that another cover was considered, the filmmaker pointed out, "That was down to the wire getting that sequence finished, 'cause obviously the visual effects are massive. So it was a long few months of being like, 'It’s gonna be great.'"

Back to Nogueira, and while she wouldn't be drawn on sharing Teen Titans or Wonder Woman details, she did make it clear she's not interested in getting involved with what the interviewer described as "culture-war-type hatred" aimed at Supergirl

"Oh, God. I try to ignore any culture-war aspect. And I do believe all of these people love these characters a lot, and they mean a lot to them, and have for years, decades maybe. I just wanted to be like, I think this one’s for everyone," she shared. "We’re just gonna tell a good story, and it’s not gonna be an us-versus-them kind of a situation."

"I want everyone to like it. From the whole spread of the DC fan base. We made it for all of them, and I hope they’re all into it."

Supergirl is now playing in theaters.

Fair play to Ana for being honest.

Now we know what came from where.

Lobo? Gunn’s call.

The final battle song? Gunn’s call.

If you’re going to take the credit when the [frick]ing movie works, you’ve got to take the criticism when parts of it don’t.

That’s leadership.

The good news? Lessons are learned. Now let’s see what Gunn does with Lanterns, Clayface, and Man of Tomorrow.

One film doesn’t define a [frick]ing universe.

Gunn made the right call as usual regarding Superman and his status in that world as a new hero, as well as having Kara born after Krypton explodes.

Also, there was nothing "woke" about this movie. Unless you think stopping human traffickers is "woke"...

The CW show was woke. This is not at all.

I liked it a lot and will be seeing it again ASAP.

@Sominan - "The CW show was woke, this isn not at all" Have you been under a rock this entire week when Milly Alcock gave her insight of how Kara would also be into girls or what? Or that Gunn, Co-CEO of DCU, is as woke as it can get as he's shown in Peacemaker S1 when the titular was in the same bed with Vigilante?

You're as bright as a rock.

I dont much about Ana Nogueira and neither does anyone else either. These genius studio heads who think they can just roll out some writer while they micro manage the entire project is the reason for this shit. This is a Gunn movie, if I told you he wrote and directed it, you would believe it.

Similar to what Marvel was doing. Then they had to back up the truck to bring in competant writers and directors to save the MCU. Even that seems debateable. Faverau was a big a reason for the MCU success as anyone.

So Gunn's prints are very quite in this.

If they wanted to include a Jimmy Eat World song, why didn't they choose this one?

Besides it has history with DC: was used in this iconic scene from the 4th Season of Smallville. Those who know, know.

Man, I really miss live-action Elseworlds DCTV shows.

"Face front, True Believers!" I just saw Supergirl and I really just don't know why some people did not enjoy it. It's a different take on Supergirl, but there are like 3 different takes on Supergirl in the DC comics. Miley played Supergirl very well and Jason was dead on with Lobo. With the production cost of the movie it wasn't going to make a ton of money, but simply tell a story about the DCU Supergirl as we move forward in the DCU. I enjoyed it and it was a good comic book summer popcorn movie that is tons better than the 1984 Supergirl movie. I lived a good part of my life wishing one day Hollywood would make superhero movies and here we finally are. Let's support both DC and Marvel movies and keep the comic book movie train rolling. Nogueira is a terrible writer. Giving her Teen Titans and Wonder Woman after Supergirl is just baffling. I honestly don't understand why she got the job in the first place. She's been writing Supergirl scripts since the Sasha Calle version was in development, and after all these years, this is the best she could come up with? A completely uninspired, mediocre script based on arguably the best Supergirl comic ever written? It's crazy that Gunn read it and approved it.

Craig is the definition of a "ChatGPT director." He openly admits that he copied True Grit, and Supergirl is filled with shots and sequences lifted from Mad Max. There's even a shameless recreation of Furiosa's scream in the desert, except it's done much, much worse.

He was hired to adapt Woman of Tomorrow, yet instead of focusing on the comic itself, he went in a completely different direction, making a film that feels far more inspired by the movies that influenced Woman of Tomorrow than by the source material he was actually hired to adapt. That decision makes no sense to me.

What's even crazier is that Gunn signed off on all of it. If he was willing to cancel Sgt. Rock just days before filming because he didn't think the script was strong enough, why greenlight such a bland, uninspired movie as the second film in the DCU? Supergirl was supposed to be the first DCU film not directed by Gunn, giving audiences a glimpse of what the rest of the franchise's creative team could deliver after Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker. Instead, it raises serious questions about his judgment as a studio head.

This movie wasn't good at all.

Loved Alcock though. She's so great in the role.

This movie feels like a Guardians (and Mad Max) rip off through and through and is hella cheesy and cringy in places There's no way Gunn didn't have a HUGE input creatively in this as it feels and looks just like one of his movies (but with a far weaker script. I don't think he's a good writer at all, but he's a lot better than whoever wrote this movie!). Last years Superman was much better, and I didn't really like that movie.

It’s such a terrible song choice and immediately takes you out of it.

I wasn’t big on the movie in general. Just boring and visually pretty ugly.

Also didn’t enjoy Momoa at all but I am unfamiliar with Lobo so maybe it’s spot on.
