James Gunn On Whether Lex Luthor Knows Superman's Secret Identity & "Plot Hole" Relating To Ultraman

James Gunn has weighed in on the perception that Lex Luthor should have been able to figure out Superman's secret identity after using his DNA to create Ultraman...

A meme roasting (or attempting to roast) Lex Luthor for failing to discover the Man of Steel's secret identity in James Gunn's Superman has been circulating online, and the director has now responded.

Though it doesn't really make a lot of sense, there's a perception that, since Lex was able to create a clone of Superman from his DNA, he should really be able to figure out that his human disguise is Clark Kent.

When someone brought this up on Threads, while also mentioning the theory that Luthor actually does know his nemesis's secret identity but is simply choosing to keep it to himself for the time being, Gunn replied:

"Lex doesn't know who he is but I don't know how he would. A) Lex thinks Superman is a disconnected alien who wants to take over the world, so I'm not sure why he'd assume he has a "secret identity." B) Hypno Glasses are real. Clark looks like another person. C) Being a genius in some ways (in Lex's case, genetics, electrochemistry, nanotechnology, nuclear & quantum physics, to name a few) doesn't mean you are a genius in all fields. Like many scientists (& artists!) he can miss basic things."

There is an argument that Lex seemed to be trying to uncover Superman's earthly origins in the infamous Russien Roulette scene, but the villain only ever asks his prisoner who raised him.

The plot of Gunn's Superman follow-up will focus on the Man of Steel (Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Hoult) putting their differences aside and joining forces to defend the planet against Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).

Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Maria Gabriella de Faria (The Engineer) have all been confirmed to return, and we recently learned that Aaron Pierre will reprise his Lanterns role as John Stewart.

Adria Arjona is also set to appear as Maxima (though there's a lot of speculation that she's actually been cast as Wonder Woman).

"At its core, it’s about Clark and Lex," Gunn said in a recent interview. "I relate to both of them. I relate to Lex’s ambition and obsession — minus the murder. And I relate to Superman’s belief in people, his Midwestern values. They’re two sides of me."

Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

This goes against Gunn's own themes that your genes or lineage informs who you are less than your upbringing/environment.

If Lex is able to clone Superman, from what I assume is cellular material, than Clark likely had some traces of his thought patterns or memories in there.

This whole thing is stupid.

@TheDarkLastSonKnight - It’s a movie about a guy in tights and red underwear outside of his pants who flies and beats up monsters.

It may be possible that some of you people are taking this stuff a tad too seriously.

@Rpendo - So these movies have regressed back to having to turn our brains off in order to force ourselves to try and enjoy it.

@Rpendo - It's ok to still want a semblance of verisimilitude in my science fiction media. You could make your argument for any media:

T2 is about synthetic and liquid metal cyborgs battling each other for the fate of mankind.

The Dark Knight is about a billionaire who dresses up like a bat and uses gadgets to defeat eccentric criminals in his city.

Wanting it to be taken somewhat seriously isn't too much to ask.

TheDarkLastSonKnight - 4/29/2026, 10:23 AM
@UltimaRex - Since it's scifi/comic fiction, I'll allow that element.
But If Ultraman is a clone, He's likely to have some of Clark's memories.
You could make the argument that he's an imperfect or dumbed down copy of Clark, But it's a harder sell for me personally, especially when we just leave it up to "Magic Glasses".

To each their own.

@TheDarkLastSonKnight @HashTagSwagg - I only saw the movie once in theaters, but was Ultraman mentioned to be a perfect or identical clone to Superman? Ultraman likely doesn't have the same medical, dental, or DNA records as Clark for Lexcorp to trace or match with Superman. There's likely no database that has Clark's DNA because he never had to go to any medical, criminal, or dental facility.

Lex seems to have made a clone that was identical to Superman in physicality only not knowledge. Ultraman had to be controlled with a billion dollar computer or video game console to fight Superman so he has no knowledge or conscience besides what he was programmed to do.

Cloning is a vague concept in general used to keep plot points open ended. So unless certain facts are stated we don't know what is or isn't. Like should a clone have the same memories or knowledge of a person? Can you clone someone's knowledge or memories?

@TheDarkLastSonKnight - its best not to think about the movie. The more you think about it, the worse it becomes.

TheDarkLastSonKnight
TheDarkLastSonKnight - 4/29/2026, 10:45 AM
@mastakilla39 - I agree about the vague cloning concept as a plot convenience as it is applied. In Superman 2025, Lex Luthor entered the Fortress of Solitude by using Ultraman, a clone of Superman created from his hair. The clone’s exact genetic makeup allowed the Kryptonian systems within the fortress to recognize Ultraman as Superman, granting access without resistance. Luthor exploited this security loophole to breach the stronghold and execute his plan.

@TheDarkLastSonKnight - you're thinking of Connor. Implanted memories is a separate technique and wasn't Clark's memories to begin with. To even do something like that would require a brain scan from Clark which Lex didn't have...
TheDarkLastSonKnight
TheDarkLastSonKnight - 4/29/2026, 10:46 AM
@vectorsigma - Tell that to Nolan, in the Prestige and Robert Angier's clones.
UltimaRex
UltimaRex - 4/29/2026, 10:50 AM
@TheDarkLastSonKnight - the Prestige was a scanning and copying device that doesn't work like cloning. If Lex had that, it'd be a different movie...

TheDarkLastSonKnight - 4/29/2026, 10:56 AM
@UltimaRex - A "scanning and copying device" in late century Colorado can copy memories, but a clone made of Clark's hair with ultra modern technology and ingenuity would do nothing but create a mindless, grunting creature.

Consider my disbelief suspended.

I was very disappointed by Gunn’s Superman but he makes a case here with his reasoning. Although hypno glasses are still dumb even if they were in a few of the comics.

It’s a little like that JLU Ep where the Flash and Lex switched bodies and Lex says “it’s time to have a look under the mask” and then “I have no idea who this person is.”

@FinnFangFoom - I had problems with the overly political plot, the characterizations (Supes lost his cool and whined way too much, the evil parents thing, the supporting characters being more interesting/entertaining, the suit, and more, but didn’t hate it. Hopefully, he does better here, but I think Gunn has too many “yes men” now and not enough people calling out bad decisions (although I think Cornsweat was on the money in that behind the scenes clip but was overruled by Gunn).
TheDarkLastSonKnight
TheDarkLastSonKnight - 4/29/2026, 10:26 AM
@Bucky74 - It goes to show you that you can have a materially perfectly casted Superman (Cavill, Corenswet), But the Director's vision can effect how that casting or performance plays out greatly.

I think Corenswet wishes the material was also being treated with more reverence.
It's obvious in the behind the scenes clips of David fighting to not have Clark be whiny in the climax when speaking to Lex.

God Bless em.

Nobody cares. The last Superman movie was shit water..I have lower expectations for this one & I won't be going to the theater & spend my hard earned money just to be pissed off AGAIN. I watched Man Of Steel & BvS with Zack JLA after watching Gunns Superman & I realize I can't trust critics or SHILLS for Gun or DC. Those movies easily EPIC & CINEMATIC. Great costumes, actors, script & theme music. Was they perfect..hell no but theyre still awesome to watch. And to think I would've NEVER watched those films had it not been for all the negative stuff I read about the on these sites. I watched all Gunns DC films & Shows...Im disappointed & turned off. DC is loved by men over 40. Of course the casual person enjoys it but the fan base is over 40. Zack Snyder films hits for that fan base because we all read the Dark Knight comics where he got his Batman from, we love the lore of their respected origins. Gunn just shits all over it just to push a political narrative. Nobody else is doing that to their fans..alienating them from the character's they love. Gunn is a lame duck director & his work other than Guardians of the galaxy is unrewatchable!! His DC & Hamada's are the worse.

Good points imo.

Also as much as Lex argues he’s going against Superman for humanity , he also views himself as above others so he can’t possibly imagine imo someone as powerful as Superman wanting to be a part of this world because why would you?.

For as much as Lex argues he’s doing this for humanity , he’s just a petty & jealous person who can’t stand that Superman gets the love and adoration he feels he rightly deserves!!.

Would get the hypno glasses if it changed the image of Clark's daily planet ID card but it doesn't. Clearly the glasses don't work on cameras so lex's drones should have picked up Clarks face using facial recognition software and matched it to Ultraman.

+ he knows of Clark kent as he name drops him after killing the food vendor.

Gunn is right. Why would anyone assume Superman does anything aside from be Superman at all times? When people don’t see him they just assume he’s out helping somewhere else. They’re not thinking he’s hiding off in an alleyway wearing glasses somewhere trying to turn in a news report. No one would suspect Superman has a secret identity because he doesn’t wear a mask. In fact, the entire point of the costumed S wearing Superman persona is so people don’t think he’s hiding from them. That’s why the costume has no mask, why it is in primary blue and red colors with a cape, and why the S is inside of a giant shield on his chest, all to show that he is transparent and a protector. That’s why Clark created the Superman persona and he created the mild mannered reporter disguise to help towards that end and find things that Superman can help with.

John Byrne also had it correct:
