Superman Day Falls Flat For Fans As DC Shares Messages But Nothing For Man Of Tomorrow/Supergirl Footage

This year's Superman Day celebrates Superman, Supergirl, and Krypto, but DC Studios has disappointed fans by sharing nothing ofsubstance from Man of Tomorrow and this summer's Supergirl.

With the Hollywood trades dismissing DC Studios' CinemaCon contribution as a disappointment, Superman Day was the perfect opportunity to bounce back.

All anyone is talking about right now is the Avengers: Doomsday trailer (which, as a reminder, has not been released online), but James Gunn had a chance today to shift the spotlight away from that movie and back to the Superman family. After all, this year's Superman Day revolves not only around the Man of Steel but also Supergirl and Krypto.

Unfortunately, this marks another major misstep for DC Studios. In the interest of fairness, let's not forget that Man of Tomorrow hasn't started shooting yet. Still, a glimpse of Brainiac, another concept sketch by a DC Comics artist, or confirmation of Adria Arjona's role in the Superman sequel would have gone a long way in building excitement for the DCU's future.

As for Supergirl, excitement for the movie already appears muted. It isn't as visually dazzling as the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, and trailers haven't wowed fans. Either there's nothing particularly "wow"-worthy to show or the studio is keeping its best moments for theaters.

Whatever the case may be, a well-cut 30-second TV spot would have gone a long way towards changing the narrative.

What do we have for Superman Day? A 47-second promo with messages from Gunn, David Corenswet, a bald Nicholas Hoult, Milly Alcock, and Jason Momoa. There's also a tease that Supergirl is teaming with Blondie for...something...and some promo art shared by a fan with no official affiliation with DC Studios.

The DCU got off to a strong start with a slate reveal and successful releases like Creature Commandos and Superman. Several of the projects in that slate have since fallen by the wayside, while Peacemaker Season 2 was a victim of over-promising and under-delivering.

Trailers for Lanterns and Supergirl have received a tepid response. The conversation around the former has revolved around a lack of superpowers, costumes, and "green," and the latter has been dismissed for looking too similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. Plus, short of a misdirect for the ages, Gunn appears to have cast a Wonder Woman fan favourite as Maxima, a character whose fanbase could be counted on two hands.

We're not writing the DCU off, but as Superman Day celebrations go, it feels like DC Studios has missed a trick.

@Nonameforme - There's plenty, they're deep in pre-production. Adria Arjona's character has not yet been revealed. Oh and there's that Supergirl movie or have you forgotten about that? Wouldn't blame you if you did. Everybody else has.

I can't believe they haven't shown us anything from a movie that hasn't started filming yet.

The disparity in coverage and negativity towards anything not Disney related is unreal. Site has serious credibility issues. Man of Tomorrow hasn’t even started filming yet and they’re bashing it.

Disney pretty much killed Star Wars and the Indiana Jones IP’s and has been coasting on Infinity War so long that the MCU suffered last year and lost so much credibility they’re in a panic and pushing nostalgia to save the ship. But here, you’d think everything they do is a cinematic tour de force! Unreal!

@Huskers - I was gonna make a post, but you pretty much summed it up. Been like that for as long as I’ve been on this site, which has been at least 10 years.

@PatientXero - Yea honestly, why wouldn’t this site just focus on the character of Superman and wish everyone a Happy Superman Day with the character that launched this whole genre. Instead they use the opportunity to be critical of the DCU. 🤷🏻‍♂️ That’s terrible, this site wouldn’t even exist without Superman being created! Show some respect and class Josh!

We all celebrate Superman Day differently, Krypto's eating treats, Supergirl is off on an adventure, and Superman is...hanging out with Lex?

Dude couldn't even muster up a BTS shot of Superman on the set of Supergirl.

How about a storyboard or two or maybe some concept art from MOT for the Gunn fans.

@Sominan - I’ve enjoyed everything so far from Gunn in the DCU. I don’t know if it’s bots or comic book readers wanting everything their way (a big problem with comic book movies) but let’s calm down a bit. I’m really hoping they kill it to shut up the comic book haters

Superman as a character goes much further than his next live action appearance in a film that hasn't even began shooting.

I get that the big opinion about Gunn's Superman around these parts is that nobody liked it (kind of like when Snyder was in charge of the character a decade ago), but seriously, your fingernails gotta be hurting from scraping this hard at the bottom of the barrel.

@TheWinkler - Nobody liked it except me and a lot of others. I would say a big proportion of the people on this site who didn’t like it had already decided they were going to like it long before it came out. They, just like Josh seem to have a hard on for being down on DC. Then get a lot of the people on this website that say they didn’t like Superman don’t seem to like anything.

This is fine, I’m more concerned that DC just doesn’t seem to give a shit about a phase/slate publicly. We’ve got Clayface, Lanterns and Man of Tomorrow. That’s it. Any big plan? Any continuity plans? Those projects seem like theyre in 3 different universes. What happened to Gods and Monsters?

No Lobo and Gene Simmons collab??

This was a miss for Gunn and DC. You’re actively building a universe around the guy and his day comes along and you … post a message on X?

Gunn doesn’t strike me as lazy or unimaginative but this was definitely both.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/18/2026, 5:05 PM
@ElJefe - I’m assuming they just don’t have anything to show right now or just don’t want to since MOT doesn’t come out till July of next year as of now…

I do hope we get perhaps a look at Brainiac soon or confirmation of Adria Arjona’s casting & character but I’m willing to wait.
ElJefe
ElJefe - 4/18/2026, 5:40 PM
@TheVisionary25 - Yeah but that’s just the usual. Why not send Corenswet to a children’s hospital to handout toys dressed as Superman? How about put out a special tie-in comic for free - digital or physical. Why not do a pet adoption event in Krypto’s name? There’s lots of stuff to do. I’m wondering if Gunn and DC just figured that Superman Day isn’t an official event and it’s kind of beneath them - or they’re too cool - who knows? But for me it’s a big fail. And I loved Superman 25!

Man , Josh will pretty much try to twist anything DCU as a negative huh?.

I guess i will be more be more positive then since i am happy to see how much at the forefront of this universe that Superman & his cast of characters seem to be right now given the film last year aswell as Supergirl and then Man of Tomorrow next year…

There’s even a rumor that they’ll be shooting the Jimmy Olsen true crime-esque show at the same time aswell like they did with Peacemaker S2 for premeire next year.

Anyway , Happy Superman Day ya’ll!!.

@RolandD - It’s funny because he’d get way more traction doing positive articles - those get the most hate comments, which on here, are the ones that repeat over and over, like to argue, and generate clicks.

I consider myself a big Superman fan. He’s far and away my favourite superhero. I’m 48 but have been reading about his exploits since I was 5 or 6. Have watched all the movies multiple times, same for Smallville and Superman/Lois and any other tv shows. Have a collection of Superman graphic novels tucked away. Attend any conventions near me and always make a beeline for Superman related exhibits.

Today did not ‘fall flat’ for me. There is no new Superman content for a movie that hasn’t started filming yet ffs.
