Sarah Michelle Gellar has returned to the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to develop a new series alongside Eternals and Hamnet director Chloé Zhao. Hulu has ordered a pilot for the show, but a full series order still hasn't been announced.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended with Sunnydale collapsing into the Hellmouth cavern. Buffy Summers saved the day and realised that the burden of being the one chosen Slayer was no longer on her shoulders, making it a (mostly) happy ending for the character.

Still, fans have been left to wonder how the upcoming sequel series, now confirmed by Gellar to be titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, will pick up where the original show ended. It's widely believed that the spotlight is going to shift to Buffy's daughter, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

"It’s not a sequel, it’s not a reboot — it’s a continuation," Gellar confirms in the video below (via FearHQ.com), adding that New Sunnydale will address where Buffy "is now in this world and what is this world that Buffy lives in with her and without her."

She added, "So it’s not a reboot, it’s not picking up with all of the same characters right away. It is not like a sequel. That’s why the name was even important to me — Buffy: New Sunnydale. It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else."

Gellar went on to admit that she's had to eat her words about a potential Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival. "I never saw how and why it could be as good [as the original series]. I’m not trying to be better. I just want to hold and honor the memory and what we created," the actress shared.

"I know sometimes that memory is conflicted for people about how they’re supposed to feel about it, but a lot of people put their blood, sweat, and tears into making what I think is an incredibly great show, and I’m incredibly proud of it."

It was Zhao's passion for the project that was a game-changer for Gellar, revealing that they went back-and-forth for three years on what a new Buffy the Vampire series could look like.

As for where things stand with the series now, she said that they're "still working on that, why and how," noting, "I know this seems like it’s taking a long time, and it’s because unless we are sure that it is exactly what we set out to do and that it makes sense to do it, we don’t want to sell you the legacy by not. When I know it’s perfect, then it will be out there, but I won’t do it unless I know it can be that."

Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce the pilot. Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar executive produces with Gail Berman.

Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce through Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television also produce, and Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original TV series.

A recent logline for Buffy the Vampire Slayer revealed that, "Nova, a 16-year-old bookworm, discovers she’s a vampire Slayer in a rebuilt Sunnydale, split between gritty Old Sunnydale and upscale New Sunnydale."

"During Vampire Weekend, a festival celebrating the town’s dark past, vampires Jack and Shirley emerge from a construction site, killing a teen and planning a ritual to raise a vampire army at the Cursed Circle," it concluded.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was released in 1992 as a feature film starring Kristy Swanson. Joss Whedon wrote that, and Fran Kuzui directed. Five years later, the franchise was rebooted for The WB with Gellar taking over the lead role. It ran for five seasons on that network and moved to UPN for the final two.

It's about a new vampire slayer called Nova but it's called Buffy: New Sunnydale?!

They kept the wrong part of the title. Shoulda been called Nova the Vampire Slayer.

Coulda been called Nova the Vampire Slayer.

WOULDA been called Nova the Vampire Slayer... if... if they'd called it that!

"It's widely believed that the spotlight is going to shift to Buffy's daughter, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong."

Well, most of that sentence was correct, but unless Josh has suddenly gone from offering his opinion on news in the guise of news to actually, you know, breaking real news, there's been absolutely ZERO to confirm the character of Nova will be Buffy's daughter, Faith's daughter, Dawn's daughter, etc etc etc.

But hey, kudos! Way to make sh1t up out of thin air and run with it.

@EducatedDefense - I was wondering if it was really confirmed that she was going to be Buffy’s daughter. Now watch some of nonsense site pick that sentence up and write their own nonsense article.

How are they going to explain Angel and Spike? Would they recast Xander?

This statement makes no sense. It clearly is a sequel.
Same universe, same characters, just set years after the last season. She’s right that it isn’t a reboot, but the way she’s describing it isn’t what a reboot is anyway.

@EscapeMySight - Yes and No. You're correct in saying it's a sequel but what SMG probably means in this context is that the show isn't a DIRECT sequel that picks up with the same characters around the same time. So far Buffy herself is the only returning character from the original show and it picks up 25 years later.

So it is a sequel but more a continuation of the world of Buffy The Vampire Slayer instead of a direct continuation of Buffy's own story with the character that were with her at the end of the show.

@MisterRiviera - Well said and I agree regarding it not being a “DIRECT” sequel, for sure, but it’s still a continuation, so still a sequel — It’s still picking up in the context of the original story, even if it isn’t continuing THAT specific story that the first show covered.

The reboot comment is also quite the head scratcher. “picking up with all of the same characters right away” — That’s not what a “reboot” is. The original show was a “reboot” of the 1992 film, that we know is true. New cast / new universe / new continuity = Reboot.

I'm not saying that the ongoing storylines in the original series weren't engaging, far from it, but it is probably fair to say that most of the fan-favorite episodes are standalone monster-of-week stories and the longer 22 episodes seasons gave the show time to truly developt all the various character relationships. Not saying that it can't be done well, but I fear that this revival will have modern streaming "a long movie cut to 8 episodes" types of seasons, which doesn't leave room for that stuff.

@FinnishDude - Short form tv shows have both upsides and downsides. It indeed doesn't leave much room for character development of a bunch of character which the original show did really well. But on the upside a shorter season results in a tighter story less bogged down by filler.

Me personally I'm oldskool. I grew up watching Buffy, Charmed, Stargate, Smallville, Star Trek etc. I even watched all 15 seasons of Supernatural. So I don't mind either way.

I’m interested for the sake of nostalgia, but capturing the same energy and the GA is going to be an uphill battle. Calling it Buffy, and knowing the appeal Buffy has, but centering around another character is going to be a huge obstacle, Buffy is the draw, not Nova or anyone else.

That this has been in development for as long as it has, and that they don’t have a for sure direction for the series beyond the pilot episode is kinda disturbing.

Fingers crossed they don’t mess this up, I’m root for them, but it’s not sounding amazing by any stretch.

Def need to bring back Willow and the crew for a cameo at the least

I'll give it a shot, but it's not going to be the same without Whedon. I do really like 'POKER FACE' though, so the writers are on point. I just hope they don't try to do too much homage and just focus on creating their own thing. Calling it 'Buffy' worries me. How much of this is going to be Gellar and how much is going to be the new cast?

Can't wait for people to call this woke even though Buffy featured a lesbian couple as series regulars, a quarter of a century ago

Yes, this is what a “reboot” is.

“So it’s not a reboot, it’s not picking up with all of the same characters right away.”

This is not what a “reboot” is.
