Channing Tatum Says Unmade GAMBIT Movie "Had Mutants Having Sex" And Reveals Why Disney Would Never Make It

Deadpool & Wolverine star Channing Tatum teases his future as Remy LeBeau beyond Avengers: Doomsday, and explains why he doesn't believe Marvel Studios will ever make Gambit a reality in its previous form.

After Channing Tatum expressed interest in playing Gambit, X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner wasted no time in signing him up to play the character in a solo movie.

Multiple attempts were made to get cameras rolling on the project, with Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski all attached to direct at one time or another. However, just as it began to take shape, the Disney/Fox merger occurred, and Gambit fell by the wayside.

Ryan Reynolds pushed to give Tatum another chance, and he made his surprise MCU debut as Remy LeBeau in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. The Roofman star's portrayal of Gambit was a hit with fans, meaning Avengers: Doomsday is now up next for the actor alongside the rest of the X-Men.

Talking to Variety, Tatum reflected on Deadpool & Wolverine by saying, "It was the most high-stakes cosplay of all time. I looked around and saw Deadpool, Wolverine, Blade — and I’m standing there in full Gambit. I had this out-of-body kid moment."

He went on to claim that Marvel Studios "has ideas" for the character moving forward, adding, "If the fans really want it, I think there’s a world where Gambit could finally get his due." In other words, there's a chance he'll continue playing the hero beyond Avengers: Secret Wars

However, he doesn't anticipate his unmade Gambit movie being part of those potential plans.

"Look, if we’d made our Fox version, that script would’ve never gotten made — ever. It was an R-rated romantic comedy," Tatum explained. "And when I say R-rated, I mean we went for it. We made Gambit the kind of character who could only exist in a movie with Deadpool. We had mutants having sex! It was wild — full-on."

"That’s something Marvel and Disney would never do. You don’t always know what Disney will be, but you definitely know what it’s not going to be. It’s not gonna be horror. It’s not gonna be sex," he continued. "But I think Marvel needs that kind of tonal diversity; something to balance the other side. Gambit’s a great opportunity for that."

"There’s so much you can do with him, and he’s slowly being built into the Marvel psyche. It’s fascinating, and I think one day they’ll figure it out."

Marvel Studios has proven itself open to telling R-rated stories when the story is right, but how much demand there is for any version of Gambit is hard to say in this era of "superhero fatigue." Still, with Reynolds reportedly developing X-Force, there could be a place for the Cajun there.

Would you like to see a Gambit movie in the MCU?

We need a 30 yr old gambit along with Rogue.

@Thebronxknight - It's just my preference but, having been introduced to the characters in the '90s through Claremont and Lee's run, I just prefer them in the late-teens or early-20s. 30-something Gambit and Rogue don't sound interesting to me, plus you miss all of Rogue's backstory. They have the opportunity to really mess with Captain Marvel when they bring Rogue into the MCU, and they shouldn't miss it.

@HelloBoysImBack - yeah, I actually really liked him and his facial structure looks more Gambit way more than Tatum's box-head.

NOT saying they would with Marvel movies but just needed to say studios owned by Disney have made a ton of horror movies and many films with Sex scenes in them. Doing an MCU one on the big screen maybe not but it can never be fully ruled out considering the companies history of using studios sans the magic kingdom/Disney logo for making stuff entirely for adults not kids.

Anyways if planning to do anything with Tatum's Gambit post secret wars I'd assume that would mean DP gets his own alt universe to play in and that's where we'd see Channing's version of the character again considering that for 616 the word is going for younger mutants in the main and if part of the DP franchise after his first one (even if not made under Disney) it would be a push to say they'd exclude being R rated with sexy scenes etc if warranted (just make it good whatever).

@Apophis71 - yeah, I think the main face of Disney brand makes people overlook that they own a few studios that make different content.

A hit with the fans? He was terrible and nowhere near as good as Taylor Kitsch in Origins. Looked awful and a wooden performance.

@Spike101 - Kitsch still wasn’t a good Gambit. There was a reason his performance was far from celebrated.

@McMurdo - Definitely not. X-Men Origin is one of the worst movies i've watched and Kitsch was one of the reasons for that. Absolutely awful. At least Tatum got some engagement from the audience (laughter). We were all bored as shit watching Kitsch's Gambit. Don't lie
Spike101
Spike101 - 10/14/2025, 10:08 AM
@McMurdo - agreed. The scene in the ally behind the bar I thought was pretty good, especially compared what Tatum phoned in during D&W

McMurdo - 10/14/2025, 10:10 AM
@WalletsClosed - Origins was horrible, but Kitsch buries Tatum in the role. That's how terrible he was in DvW. He played a caricature. Kitsch actually tried to play the character even if he didn't fully succeed. Night and Day performances though. Tatum was awful.

@WalletsClosed - and Tatum with his cosplay costume and his phoned in performance was? Don’t make me laugh…

WalletsClosed - 10/14/2025, 11:10 AM
@McMurdo - You guys actually have me defending the garbage known as D&W lol. I don't even like Tatum in the role, hated him even, but he was by far and away better than Kitsch. I know this because I rewatched Origins like a week before seeing D&W. He was absolutely horrendous and was Gambit in name only. At least Tatum had the costume, was Cajun (yes, the accent was horrific), and had good action scenes. And once again, he provided something, laugher and charisma. What did Kitsch provide other than being an auraless, boring, piece of shit? The only thing Kitsch has over Tatum is the look of Gambit. That's literally it.

@Spike101 - Go rewatch that garbage movie (Origins) and come back to me. The nostalgia here is wild. Kitsch's performance was panned on release for a reason. Dude was awful

Tatum seems like a fun guy but his Gambit is just a comedy sketch. Taylor was perfect in the role but is too old now. I'm sure Gambit will eventually be recast in the X-Men trilogy. Until then, he can utilised as part of the fallen hero body count in the next two movies.

I mean , Marvel has made more “mature” or R Rated content in recent years but they perhaps wouldn’t still go as far as Tatum wanted his version of Gambit to be though we’ll never know I guess…

Also while I enjoyed his somewhat exaggerated version of Gambit in DP & W and am looking forward to seeing him in Doomsday aswell , I do hope we get a full clean slate in regards to X-Men post SW so new actors in all the roles etc!!.

Great costume. Wrong person wearing it. In a perfect world we would have a more serious version of Gambit played by Austin Butler.

There's a lot of comics properties that could benefit from an R rating, even demand it...
I may have missed something but I never got the impression Gambit was one.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 10/14/2025, 9:53 AM
@Slotherin - I mean I don't recall him ever having a top shelf comic but his history as being considered a ladies man (although that is kinda contradicted by having one of the longest running relationships with Rogue) who was raised by a thieves guild and first publicly used his powers was after Candra sold him to a child slave trader at age 15 kinda leads it into where a darker or mature tone would fit esp when he did end up working for Mister Sinister for a while. Then again that could be said of MANY comic characters almost always in stuff aimed primarily towards kids when you look at the history/background.

he is a horrendous Gambit. it's embarrassing how bad he is in the role.

I didn't mind his Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine, but the accent was a bit over the top, even though it was done on purpose for the gags. Glad they are toning it down for Doomsday.
