Few fictional characters can hope to achieve the pop culture status of Batman's defining nemesis The Joker, who has appeared in various incarnations throughout his near eighty-year-old existence via comic books, movies, television, and other forms of media and merchandising. Even as far as the source material is concerned, Joker's depictions are many, ranging from a harmless prankster to a nihilistic mass murderer. Although there have been attempts to explain the radical deviations of the Clown Prince of Crime, including Grant Morrison's "super-sane" theory that suggests he has no real personality and reinvents himself on a constant basis, the most shocking came from DC Comics' Rebirth initiative, where it was revealed that The Joker may have always been three completely separate characters right under readers' noses. This will be properly explained in Geoff Johns' Three Jokers storyline later this year, published under the more edgy DC Black label.
In the meantime, a fan has created an amazing piece of unofficial art re-imagining the cover to Three Jokers in live action, with the three silver screen adaptations of the character. From left to right - Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), Jack Nicholson (Batman), and Jared Leto (DC Extended Universe / Worlds of DC).
According to Geoff Johns,
"It's all about scars and healing wrong and healing right and pain. If I could tell one Joker story, this is the one I would tell... [It] will create a relationship between Bruce and The Joker that is completely different than the one they have now."
