As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, StudioCanal, Fathom Entertainment, and Rialto Pictures have announced that Terminator 2: Judgment Day is returning to theaters from August 28 to September 2 to mark the groundbreaking sci-fi classic's 35th anniversary.

Available in 4K, REALD 3D and premium formats, the re-release also celebrates "Judgment Day" on August 29. The U.S. release has a wide national theatrical footprint thanks to a partnership with Fathom Entertainment, the leading speciality distributor of content to theatrical partners worldwide, and Rialto Pictures. StudioCanal is handling global distribution.

The 4K and 3D presentation uses StudioCanal's 2017 restoration and 3D conversion, so this isn't a remaster or updated version of filmmaker James Cameron's classic 1991 movie. However, that version has previously received widespread acclaim from film buffs.

T2 remains one of the highest-grossing and most influential films ever made. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, and Robert Patrick, the film earned four Academy Awards and revolutionised action cinema with effects that definitely hold up today. Terminator 2: Judgment Day holds a 90% critics' score and 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Cameron said today, "T2 was made for theaters, and our lovingly-prepared 3D version, coming back to the big screen, is the absolute best way to see the film.  I believe it's safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so spoiler alert:  the good guys win against the AI superintelligence! And maybe that’s a message of hope we all could use this summer."

Ray Nutt, Chief Executive Officer for Fathom Entertainment, added, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day was a cultural phenomenon in the U.S. upon release and 35 years later, remains a timeless, non-stop thrill ride that audiences – new and old - will love to see."

"With non-stop action, iconic performances from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, spectacular sound and visual effects, and even a massive hit song by Guns N' Roses ('You Could Be Mine'), the re-release of T2 is a must-see theatrical event perfect for 3D and other premium formats."

In a future ruled by machines, young John Connor holds the key to humanity’s survival. When a reprogrammed Terminator is sent back in time to protect him, a new threat emerges: the T-1000, a terrifying next-generation assassin capable of becoming anyone, anywhere. No rules. No limits. No mercy. As Sarah Connor races to stop Judgment Day before it begins, the fate of humanity hangs by a thread.

Tickets for Terminator 2: Judgment Day's 35th Anniversary will go on sale on July 17. Check out a trailer in the X post below.

I saw this in the theatre twice when it first came out and we used to rent it a lot at the video store. That’s right the video store. And you got in trouble if you didn’t rewind the tape.

Still prefer #1 - Arnold plays an evil Terminator better than a nice one and Reese is awesome, but love #2 as well!

@ridah - Both are complete differ genres. 1st one was a slasher and 2nd one was an action blockbuster. I prefer part 2 becuz my parents were refugees who didnt know much english but we understood action so #2 has a deeper impact for me.

This and Rambo 2 were consistently played at my house as a kid lol

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - Its hard for any movie to compete with 1 of the best films and sequel ever made. Godfather 2, Toy Story 2, and Terminator 2 are the holy grail of sequels. Most argue these sequels are better than the 1st film.

@mastakilla39 - The Empire striktes back is probably the best sequel ever made.
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 7/8/2026, 11:26 AM
@MarvelZombie616 - For me, in order to be the best sequel it has to be able to stand alone, argueably better than the original, and not require me to have seen the 1st film to have an impact. SW:TESB requires you to have seen the 1st film to fully enjoy it, so thats why I put those films above it.

But I agree, it is the best Star Wars Sequel, just not the "best sequel" ever made.

I was only born in '90 so I didn't see it in theaters. But you best believe that VHS got a epic heck load of play as soon as it became available. I grew up watching Desperado, Rumble in the Bronx, Aliens (oh man they had the most awesome action figures for kids; for an R-rated movie), etc. so this was obviously top tier. Also legit the first movie I specifically recall crying to; that final goodbye was a tear-jerker. (I probably cried at The Land Before Time before that, for good reason; but as far as I remember...)

Make no mistake I also watched the puffy box Disney movies as well.

What a great decade to grow up! Oh man and then there was Broken Arrow, Jurassic Park, Con Air, Armageddon, The Rock, Face/Off, Aliens (with those incredible action figures for kids from an R-rated movie), etc.

I honestly think this up there as my favorite movie of all time. I remember seeing this in theaters like it was only yesterday.

Still one of the all-time best sequels, but Dark Fate has kind of marred the experience of Terminator 2.

@XRayCat - Definitely some cool bits in T3 and it has a great ending but man it feels like a big budget TV movie sometimes and gets really campy.

@Forthas - As others have so accurately noted, Dark Fate doesn't exist as canon.

Some might say there are only two, but I'm more generous. There are truly only 3....maybe 4 if I give Salvation a pass.

Easily one of the best movies to come out of the 90s. The effects still hold up.
GeneralZod

@ModHaterSLADE - Probably the best adventure/action/sci fi film of the 90s (Schindler's List, Shawshank and Pvt. Ryan best dramas). I walked out of T2 completely blown away, similar to Star Wars 77.

Yeah, that's what happens when you are fantasizing and writing some fictional story..... The harsh reality, however!

@c0ldR0b0t - I dont think it looks too bad compared to other remasters. But similar to Matrix and Lord of the rings, I hate how they messed with the color grading.

Independence Day was pretty good, matter of fact I think it brought back disaster movies when that block buster came out!
