TERMINATOR Director James Cameron Confirms He's Working On New Movie But Has Been "Unable To Get Very Far"

Avatar: Fire and Ash director James Cameron has confirmed that he is indeed working on a new Terminator movie, while explaining why he has been "unable to get very far."

Last year, Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day director James Cameron indicated that he was developing a mysterious a new project set in the Terminator universe.

That was all we had to go on (and still is, pretty much) at the time, but the legendary filmmaker has now confirmed that he is still working on the script for a new movie - and that he has hit a bit of a roadblock.

"I've been tasked with writing a new Terminator story," he tells CNN. "I've been unable to get [very far] on that... I don't know what to say that won't be overtaken by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now."

When the first Terminator came out in the '80s, the movie's premise did seem a lot more far-fetched than it does today, and the advent of AI has resulted in a very real fear that the technology could become too advanced. We're not sure how many people would be too concerned that it might ultimately become self-aware and we could have a Skynet situation on our hands, but we take Cameron's point.

Despite decent reviews, the last movie, Dark Fate, was the latest instalment in the franchise to underperform at the box office, and it was generally assumed that it'd be a very long time before we see the war against the machines continue on the big screen.

However, in a 2024 interview, Cameron hinted that the franchise would continue with a new live-action project while speaking to THR about the Netflix animated series, Terminator Zero.

"It looks interesting. My relationship to that is very much like The Sarah Connor Chronicles — other people spinning stories in a world I set in motion is interesting to me. What’s their takeaway? What intrigued them about it? Where are they going with it? It looks like they’re going back to the root cause of Judgment Day — the nuclear war — and whether that’s an ultimate timeline. I’d be curious to see what they’ve come up with. I’m working on my own Terminator stuff right now. It’s got nothing to do with that. Like with The Sarah Connor Chronicles, they occasionally touched on things I had been playing with completely independently. So there’s some curiosity there. It’s not a burning curiosity, but, obviously, it’d be nice to see it succeed."

"It’s totally classified," he added when asked for more details. "I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robotic agent if you were to talk about it, even retroactively."

There's been some speculation that Cameron might decide to direct this new Terminator film himself, but we know that he intends to take the helm of at least one more Avatar movie after the upcoming Fire and Ash, and may not be free to move on to another project for quite some time.

Would you like to see another Terminator movie, or do you think the franchise should be left alone at this stage?

They should do a movie where Skynet sends a Terminator to the past to infiltrate Cyberdyne Systems and assist a young scientist to kick start Skynet decades earlier instead of hunting John Connor. But by altering the timeline of the future significantly, The Resistance sends a Terminator unit of their own to assassinate the scientist but the Skynet Terminator must protect the asset to ensure Skynet gets started earlier.

@SonOfAGif - dude. That's an epically great idea. It'd probably make the audience sympathetic towards the scientist for sure. Kinda like Miles Dyson but expanded upon.
Oh, and have the resistance-sent Terminator a brutal killer to accomplish its mission at all costs ... thus making it scary and evil ... for the side of good.

You're onto something man!

@MuadDib - Call it "Terminator: Rebooted" as a play on both the franchise being rebooted and the Skynet program being rebooted. By doing this they can avoid the entire John Connor plot and not need Arnold back for a glorified cameo. They could definitely dive back into the Sci-Fi horror of the originals.

@lazlodaytona - Yes exactly! Since Skynet knows what John and Sarah did by going to Miles Dyson, The system knows it's compromised with him. So it sent it's interface and data back in time to a completely different scientist whose looking for an invention to put him on the map. And this Evil Terminator unit uses his vulnerability and desperation to kickstart Skynet earlier. And the Ruthless Resistance unit goes on a complete rampage to kill the scientist, Terminator, and anyone standing it it's way. The audience will not know who to cheer for.

@SonOfAGif - freaking great stuff.

I'd also like skynet to send 3 or 4 terminators back at the same time to different eras like in the Predator animated movie on Hulu... four stories in different years simotaniously

SonOfAGif - 9/15/2025, 8:46 PM
@lazlodaytona - I had an idea for that too lol. I call it "Terminator: Archives" and basically in a specific year a Terminator Archive Unit was sent to be sort of a Hard drive for Skynet. Basically everytime Skynet tried something new, They would send a Terminator back in time to report it to the Archive Unit so other terminators could load up the Intel of future probabilities and what happens if such and such survives or gets killed. Essentially a Resistance keeps forming and Skynet has to keep going into the past to undo the mess it makes for itself. Thus allowing every Terminator storyline to be canon.

@SonOfAGif - I'll tell you what that's genuinely a pretty cool idea that compliments Sarah's ethical dilemma in T2

@SonOfAGif - What if they take The Terminator series back to the 80's, with Skynet realizing that it keeps losing to the human resistance because one of its early original programmers deeply embedded strategic flaws/vulnerabilities that are/were ultimately self-defeating for Skynet but also encrypted in a way Skynet cannot identify/solve/remove them. So Skynet sends a Terminator back to the 80's to keep that programmer from putting those vulnerabilities in place, but because the human resistance does not know about any of this, they don't send a protector. It's just up to programmer and his 80's allies to defeat the terminator and save themselves so that the future human race will also be able to dave itself. The whole story is about the fight, race and foresight to future-proof AI's destructive potential by fighting ealrier than later.

@lazlodaytona - My idea is for a new trilogy in which the first movie is of a Terminator being sent from the future to plant the seeds for Skynet to be started decades earlier. The first movie the Terminator kills off roadblocks in Cyberdyne such as analysts, shareholders, and programmers that will get promotions and and new credentials over the Skynet chosen scientist. At the end of the movie the Terminator reveals itself to the Scientist to offer him/her a chance at making a name for themself and building a future for mankind. The second part is the Resistance sending a Terminator back in time to kill the Scientist and the Evil Terminator Unit must protect him/her at all costs. The third movie would be about the Scientist becoming the hero and having to set up a firewall preventing Skynet from becoming self aware and the evil Terminator begins to hunt him/her down and their loved ones to retrieve the hard drive that has the Skynet program on it.

@AnthonyVonGeek - For all the hate it gets, Salvation was a great movie. Not perfect, but Bale was a great JC. This would be my first choice for a continuation starting point. Way better than the JC who becomes a Skynet terminator, that was dumb af

@AnthonyVonGeek - I don't want another time travel / current day terminator story, give us what McG promised yet failed to deliver. A prequel that shows John bringing humanity back from the brink, lean more into the horror of the first film, less of the outlandish action, no line call backs, make JC the central character and stay the hell away from the boring ass desert.

There were tons of great Terminator stories made as comics.

The original Dark Horse Terminator Story, Robocop vs. Terminator, Cold War, even the Alien/Terminator/Predator Crossover.

There are also great fan movies on Youtube.

@MarvelZombie616 @lazlodaytona - IDW actually did a Transformers vs. Terminator series a couple of years ago and it was pretty f**king awesome. Now that Skydance/Paramount owns the film rights to both franchises, who wouldn’t want to see that? Plus both franchises could use a shot in the arm and this might be just the ticket. Hell, throw in G.I. Joe for the human element (picking up from the end of “RotB”) and now you’re cooking!

@lazlodaytona- Yeah, I know that it’s kind of an out-there idea, but it’s not hard to see how the TF/GI Joe/ Terminator franchises could cross over. I mean, instead of the Decpticons being being the main threat in a TF movie, how about Skynet and a swarm of Terminators of all different shapes and sizes? And then, like I said, throw in GI Joe as the human element (essentially the audience window into the whole conflict with the “WTF is going on?” perspective), and there you go. It actually makes sense in established TF cinematic universe.

@Deadinside - Hey buddy I’m still here and I’m doing fine. Just been super busy for a while with work and stuff around the house so I’ve been mainly just reading the articles here when I can and not commenting a whole lot as I don’t have a lot of time for that right now.
