MAN OF TOMORROW Star Frank Grillo Looks Jacked As He Teases Getting Into "Fight Shape"

Peacemaker star Frank Grillo has shared a new work out photo confirming that he's in fighting shape to return as the DCU's Rick Flag Sr. in 2027's Man of Tomorrow.

We first met Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, where he was tasked with leading Task Force M, a group of monsters forced into service by Amanda Waller.

After taking a beating from Clayface, Rick saved the day (mostly) and was appointed the new Director of A.R.G.U.S. sometime between the events of Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. So far, Frank Grillo is the only actor who has appeared as the same character in every DCU project, and he'll next be put front and centre in 2027's Man of Tomorrow

When we last saw Rick, he'd broken bad by allying with Lex Luthor and stranding Christopher Smith in "Salvation," a Multiversal prison where A.R.G.U.S. intends to send the world's criminal metahumans.

Now, the actor has shared a post-workout photo, confirming that he'll be in fighting shape for his DCU return. Man of Tomorrow begins shooting in April, so Grillo still has time to prepare, but he's already looking ready for a fight if this Instagram post is any indication.

We're expecting Man of Tomorrow to continue exploring Rick's newfound partnership with Lex, and he'll likely be responsible for releasing the villain from prison. After all, how better to prove that the world doesn't need metahumans than to allow the LuthorCorp CEO to suit up and save the day?

"My character, Rick Flag Sr., is a big part of the sequel’s story, so I'm excited about it," Grillo previously said of the Superman sequel.

Filmmaker James Gunn, meanwhile, has teased, "It is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together, to a certain degree, against a much, much bigger threat. And it's more complicated than that. It's as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex Luthor, sadly."

Written and directed by James Gunn, Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr.

Several actors and characters are rumoured to appear, including Aaron Pierre's John Stewart/Green Lantern and John Cena's Peacemaker.

Recent reports have suggested Gunn is looking to cast the DCU's Wonder Woman, and while the filmmaker has remained silent on that, he did recently confirm that Steve Trevor won't appear in the Superman sequel. The hunt for Brainiac also continues, with Dave Bautista, Matt Smith, Claes Bang, and Sam Rockwell among those said to be in the mix.

Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Salmon, rice, and a little tren. Just the right mix. I need that Brainiac ceremoniously kills Flag Sr. scene in MOT.

@MisterBones - No Tren. But he does do TRT, which is pretty necessary pushing 60 these days.

For some reason, the new dcu just feels like a made for tv thing. Doesn't feel like anything has any weight

@Sicario - I kind of agree. I enjoyed Superman mostly too.

I think some of that has to do with Peacemaker having such a large foothold in the universe so far. Its a rather silly show for the most part that has its fair share of seriousness but overall it feels inconsequential in a stakes sense. And its look and feel is clearly so TV; and not the kind of premium quality that you normally see on HBO. There's benefits to varying styles and flavors in a universe but I think everything still has to somehow feel of the same world at the same time. Its not easy to pull that off.

On the other end I think some of it has to do with how much Gunn leans into the comicbookiness of it all, which sometimes feels cartoonish. I like those elements at times but I also think you need to have a sense of gravity and substantiveness blended with it. Its doable. I think that balancing act Gunn sort of misses sometimes.

@Sicario - Superman’s whiney Gen whatever man-child who screams and needs constant comfort doesn’t help fight that CW look and feel

@Sicario - Agreed. What's worse it the films feel like by product of the tv shows instead of the other way around imo.

@MisterBones - I have a counter argument, more counter theory than argument. I don't think peacemaker is the reason that it feels more like tv.

I think it's just the movie, in an alternate universe only the movie exists and not the peacemaker tv show, I'd be able to show you why it feels like tv.

Bear with me here, I'll say it upfront, I didn't like the movie, apart from the israel Palestine stuff, the movie was mediocre to say the least. It was a mile wide and an inch deep. There was nothing in the movie that made it feel like it had any depth whatsoever. The israel Palestine stuff I liked because 'free Palestine' , but not because of the movie itself.

Peacemaker has more depth than superman, the ideation for the new dcu feels episodic in the TV way than, say, star wars. A story of any kind, this is my theory, has to have more time passing in it, for it to feel like it has any kind of weight. Superman 2025 is about 3 days long in universe. So whatever transpired feels weightless because of how quick it is. Now of course there are stories that transpire within days or a single day which could feel like it has depth, but those movies necessarily need to be like a character study than a superhero movie. These 2 can crossover, but exception not the rule.

Peacemaker is sort of a character study, since he is put in situations that pushes his limits in a way superman 2025 doesn't. You are correct in how Gunn leans into the comicbookiness, which doesn't help at all.

Now only way to make sure my argument is coherent is if we lived in that alternative universe, or maybe just ask someone who hasn't watched peacemaker season 2. But also, ask in contrast with another movie, any comicbookiness movie, if superman 2025 feels like a TV episode or a movie. Has to be someone who doesn't watch comicbook movies either. Or else they might be influenced by the big name. Anyway just my theory. Kinda irks me that the new dcu really feels like tv lol.

Ngl , he does look good so kudos to him…

Honestly , I think Grillo has done well in the role and I also think this version of Rick Flagg Sr has been decent so far.

Yes , he is not the flashiest of characters and I do think his descent into villainy so far has been a bit rushed but I do think the seeds for that have been there since Creature Commandos…

I don’t think he hates all metahumans but given the ending of Superman especially , he had started to think perhaps they were given too much free reign and couple that with his grief over the death of his son aswell as Lex’s manipulation no doubt then I feel it makes sense the route he has gone for the most part.

Anyway , I’m gonna be interested to see Flagg Sr’s role in MOT since I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s an ally to Lex but also another antagonistic figure especially if Checkmate is involved in opposition to ARGUS!!.

Combat suit for Rick Flag Sr., please. He could be equipped with LexCorp technology, turning him into a new version of Metallo.
