MCU's Approach To Creating A Cohesive NYC Across DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, THE PUNISHER, And SPIDER-MAN Explained

Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum explains how the MCU is creating a cohesive, street-level New York across Daredevil: Born Again, The Punisher Special Presentation, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Marvel Studios is finally fleshing out the street-level corner of the MCU, but how will Daredevil: Born Again, The Punisher Special Presentation, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day link up?

A big part of that depends on whether Wilson Fisk is still the New York City Mayor at the end of Season 2. However, Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle is set to appear in the next Spider-Man movie (where the Man Without Fear is also rumoured to make a cameo appearance).

Even though the characters will cross paths on screen, Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum has confirmed that Marvel Studios is setting out to make each project its own. At the same time, the idea is to ensure there's a certain level of cohesiveness.

"It's exactly the same as anything in the MCU. It's a small, tight-knit group of producers, and wherever the characters cross or worlds cross, you're talking and looking at each other's work," he told Phase Hero"That doesn't mean there are these major plot points that are set up in one project that pay off in the next project. It's more about making sure it feels like one universe."

"That doesn't mean you have to stick to the same tone or genre. We bounce around all the time from comedy to drama...you want New York to feel like the same New York. Like many things we do, the answers are in the source material and comics."

"You can read a Daredevil and Spider-Man comic, and you're looking at two completely different lenses of the world and of New York City," Winderbaum continued. "You want it to feel like the same city even though they're completely different in tone."

The Marvel Studios executive didn't share many new details about Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, but offered fans an exciting update about where things stand with The Punisher Special Presentation.

"It's wrapped up. We're in editorial now. Written by Jon Jon Bernthal and Rei Green, our director, shot by Robert Elswit, an Academy Award-winning DP," Winderbaum teased. "Beautiful piece, and incredibly acted by Jon. It's really emotional and wild."

In another recent conversation with ComicBook.com, the Marvel Television boss reined in expectations about how closely connected these street-level stories will be.

"I think everything will go in order," Winderbaum said of the MCU's timeline. "Daredevil Season 2 comes out before Spider-Man, and like I said, there’s a coherence there. They’re part of the world, but I wouldn’t put too much faith in big, strong narrative connections."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn't likely to feature the web-slinger battling The Kingpin then. Still, this was to be expected when Marvel Studios no longer wants fans to feel like they need to do streaming homework before watching their movies.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 comes to Disney+ in March 2026. The Punisher Special Presentation doesn't have a confirmed release date, but it will likely hit the streamer before Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31, 2026.

Before the MCU dies, they really need a series, more likely a film (if they can get the rights to use Kingpin in a film) where Spidey, DD, and maybe even Punisher are taking on Kingpin and whoever he hires to keep him safe or do a job (Hobgoblin, Scorpion, Bullseye, ...whoever) just once. You talk about a film that I would guess 99% of the fans want to see, it's so obvious and yet nobody has done it yet, I think it would be this.

@Linux1172 - truly astonishing. people have been asking for Daredevil to team up with Spidey for literally forever and instead they chuck Punisher and Hulk into a movie where tension will be completely non existent because silly string and bb pellets do nothing to the Hulk.

@Linux1172 - Sigh, dunno how many times I need to say this, Disney doesn't NEED to get any additional rights for Kingpin, certainly not withina Spider-Man film. IF it is a Spider-man film Sony's rights allow his use fully so there shouldn't be any reason for any legal obstacles at all, just Sony saying yes to his inclusion. There is also zero reason why DD and Punisher could also be in a SM film as proven by this next film and the last one.

It is ONLY outside of Spider-man films it get's more complicated and what the actor is aware of the major issues without knowing enough to be clear on it. Marvel carved out an exception clause specific to the character due to how big a part he became primarily with DD but also to a lesser degree with some others thus Sony can't prevent his use in any project that revolves around a story from a DD comic plus a more grey area clause related to appearing alongside other Marvel characters Fisk interacted with prior to the date Sony signed the deal on IP rights. THAT was why the Hawkeye story revolved around a DD story so much, as in the Echo origin tale, as Hawkeye alone as a character V Kingpin was in the grey area. It was also why they could fully use Kingpin more readily free from fear of issues with Sony in Echo's own show.

I am fairly sure Feige will fully want to have DD and SM team up against Kingpin, as much as we get frustrated with him at times he's as much a nerd at heart as all of us. I also don't see Sony being against it considering they greenlit Matt appearing in NWH and Frank in Born again so expecting we WILL get that in SM5 or 6.

Honestly , that seems like the best approach imo and ironically the same one that the original Marvel TV was pretty much taking so it’s funny to see it circle back around…

At this point , I’m expecting the Mayor Fisk stuff to be relatively self contained to DD but I could see certain bits of fallout from it being reflected in Spidey such as a possible power vacuum that allows people like Tombstone to come out and try to lay claim.

Anyway , I’m looking forward to the connections between DD:BA S2 , the Punisher special and BND!!.

As much as I have lost a lot of interest in the MCU post Endgame...This has me insanely pumped. DD, Punisher and Spider-Man are my top 3 Marvel characters. I will say, that they have really nailed the casting and movies/shows for all 3 of them. Say what you want about Born Again season 1(everyone always seemed to ignore that it was mostly done, when it got reworked) every other season of DD, Punisher, and the 3 spidey films have been great. 2026 is easily the most pumped I've been about the MCU since 2019. Hopefully they also stick the landing with Doomsday and Secrert Wars, but honestly with all the DD, Punisher and Spidey we're about to get, I almost don't care lol.

@JabbaTheSus - "every other season of DD, Punisher, and the 3 spidey films have been great."

Daredevil Season 2 was average at best, Born Again was awful, Punisher Season 2 was awful, Homecoming was average at best, Far From Home was awful, No Way Home was just fun cameo nostalgia fanservice porn that was horribly written. Good to watch on a first watch with a packed theater, rewatching it by yourself or with family in your own home exposes it.

The only good projects from those 3 have been Daredevil Season 1, Daredevil Season 3, and Punisher Season 1

@WalletsClosed - I'm not saying their oscar winning pieces of media, but they're pretty damn solid for live action comicbook media. I've enjoyed them all quite a bit, so **shrugs**

Needs to be single story episodes with the occasional 2 parter otherwise all they are doing is stringing out a boring formulaic film

The tone of New York in Marvel Studios stories is identical to the tone in real life. I visit NY all the time and it's exactly how it's depicted in Marvel Studios. You will have a drag show on one corner, a protest on another, someone being brutally murdered in an alley two blocks over, someone singing from their fire escape, and the police doing a drug raid down below. New York is like a living embodiment of every human emotion and every movie genre coexisting together.
