X-Men ’97 Executive Producer Confirms Nightcrawler’s Death Will Be Permanent

Gambit died in X-Men '97 Season 1, only to rejoin the lineup by the end of Season 2. Will something similar happen with Nightcrawler in season 3?

After X-Men '97 seemingly killed off Gambit in Season 1 only to bring the fan-favorite Cajun back in Season 2, fans are naturally taking Nightcrawler's death with a heavy dose of skepticism.

But series producer Eric Lewald is saying that Kurt Wagner's exit is final.

Speaking to The Direct [via Bleeding Cool], Lewald stated that Nightcrawler's tragic death is intended to be permanent but the show earned it, commenting, "Oh yeah! But the finale of Season 2 is very emotional, and it's earned. It is earned because those are the characters that we've all spent 30 years marinating in, and thinking of, and loving."

He went on to add, "And because of the personal relationships among the ones that are in jeopardy, and the one that ends up having to pay the price, it just… it fits. It fits, and again, we can't take credit for that story twist. The guys, you know, Matt Chauncey and the people doing the writing made that choice, but we think it's a perfect choice."

It was previously revealed that it was Nightcrawler who was originally slated to die in X-Men 97 season 1, not Gambit, so in a way, the show is simply undergoing a bit of course correction as they get back to some of the initial plans and concepts.

Plus, Nightcrawler's death just functionally makes the X-Men 97 creative team's job a little easier, as teleportation is widely considered one of the hardest powers to manage in any sort of action storytelling format because, without strict limitations, it instantly breaks standard plot tension. Standard plot devices such as retrieving a bomb, escaping a collapsing building, or sneaking past guards all become trivial with such an ability.

Heading into season 3, the Season 2 post-credits scene seems to be a clear indication of where the show is headed as it completely reshaped the show's political landscape.

While anti-mutant politician Graydon Creed won the presidency, his administration is secretly compromised now that Mystique has killed Val Cooper and assumed her persona.

At SDCC 2026, producers confirmed Season 3 will also mark the revival's first appearance of classic Brotherhood of Mutants members, including Toad, Pyro, Blob, Avalanche, and Surge.

Expect all of these plotlines to converge with the emotional aftermath of Magneto's death at the hands of Apocalypse.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.

From executive producers Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, Larry Houston, and Beau DeMayo.

The voice cast includes Ross Marquand, Matthew Waterson, Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, and George Buza.

@dragon316 - Good God, punctuation is your friend. Rely on it, please! But from what I could decipher, I do agree. Death has become meaningless in comics.

@TDKRnry88 -
Everyone on here has a gimmick. I just assumed that talking incomprehensibly was his. He’s been doing it for over a decade now.

@eddyxx - I used to correct him then I realized (or assumed) he had a disability. And I felt bad for poking fun at him. If you decipher what he says, there's smarts and literacy. He just has some writing impediment. I accept him for how he is ❤️

Glad I found the time to watch the last episode yesterday and didn't wait until today. Didn't saw it coming at all. Made way more impact than Rogue just giving her life

@bkmeijer1 - agreed

Nightcrawler in the show (especially this season) like in the comics was the moral center so losing him perhaps permanently does hurt sadly.

Also poor Rogue , got back her love but lost her brother.

Well this sucks. Nightcrawler has always been my favorite X-Man. The comics have made his powers work since 1975 and it's never been an issue. The decision to kill him for good is just a terrible creative decision.

That sucks since Nightcrawler is one of my top favorite X-Men (though he has died in the comics at atleast one point) but I get it since you don’t want to keep doing the death & resurrection card all the time because that could lessen the stakes and emotional weight.

I had some issues with S2 , namely structurally which led to some storyline rushing imo in the finale but I thought Kurt’s death did feel emotional and earned in a season I still thought was solid overall!!.

Anyway , goodbye Elf…

Did anyone else feel like S2 was just filler? Like it was just setting up the next season?

I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy it, but it definitely felt lackluster.

@ArthurFuchsache - I mean , almost every season of a tv show is setting up the next in some capacity so yes somewhat.

I will say that trying to do a mix of story of the week aswell as overarching narrative in a 9-10 episode season like the original show might be too much hence it could feel like filler to an extent , especially since we got 3 relatively standalone episodes back to back this time.

I'm definitely not a Beau DeMayo fanboy, and I always like to give the benefit of doubt in these shakeup situations. But Season 2 really did hit a hard shift. I feel like there is a big effort to convince the fanbase that it has nothing to do with anything and is just a coincidence, but damn - Up to that Apocalypse killing Magneto episode, the show was generally entertaining (despite some rushed pacing, etc.). It really jumped the shark with Apoca-Gambit, in my opinion (and many others' it seems). And while the Nightcrawler death carried a lot of weight, it felt like it was needed to strike a chord with the audience rather than needed in the actual storyline.
