Batman Begins. The best Batman film of all time. Why is it the best? The answer is simple.

Out of all the Batman films Batman Begins gave us the best look into Bruce Wayne's head. It showed us why he does what he does. Beyond that it even shows us how he does what he does in great detail. I'll give everyone that The Dark Knight might be the best MADE film out of all other films, but as far as which is the best BATMAN film I'm giving it to Batman Begins every time.

We see Bruce loose his parents. We see the dark path it sends him on. We get to watch in detail as he starts to understand the criminal mind. The fact Bruce even starts to sympathize with those who steal to survive. Bruce Wayne is fleshed out in a way that has almost never been seen before. Oh wait. Maybe it has. Which leads me to the second best Batman film of all time.

This film does almost exactly what I just said Batman Begins gives us. It gives me the character of Bruce Wayne fleshed out. It makes us care about his journey. It helps us understand the pain he has over the lose of his parents. Some might even argue that it is THE BEST Batman film ever.

The Dark Knight is a great film, but at the end of the day the reason we love it so much is because of how well written and acted the Joker was through out the film. But I'm a bigger Batman fan than a Joker fan which is why I prefer Batman Begins to The Dark Knight. I will give you guys that the kidnapping scene in Japan and the Batman vs S.W.A.T. team scene is some of the best action scenes in all of action films.

So in conclusion, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are both great films. Not only two of the best comic book films ever, but two of the better films ever made. So what the heck happened to The Dark Knight Rises? What a crap film. Damn third film curse!

I actually agree with this. I think Batman Begin felt the most like a comic book and felt the most like a batman movie. I think the Dark Knight is a better movie but not a better batman movie. In Batman Begins Batman was the main character where as the Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises it felt like the villains and side characters took some of his spotlight.

Good. Its absolutely true. Batman Begins from a technical film making point of view is a better film than TDK: Personally I would put Batman Returns over TDK. People underrate how brilliant Michell Pfiefer was. Her Catwoman was to me as good a performance as Heaths joker. Also, for a film with a character called the Joker in it TDK doesn´t make you laugh much. Why so serious? you know. Even Cillian Murphy in Batman Begins had more laugh out loud lines than Ledgers joker. I mean I love TDK, but people ignore some gaping holes in it and really awful character development because Ledger was really good. But verything else in TDFK was really badly cast. The guy who played two-face, worst casting ever, so wooden and boring. Maggie Gylenhal makes me want to shoot myself in the head everytime she´s on screen. I don´t see what was wrong with Holmes? apart from the fact she was Tom cruise´s wife. And now its a trend to hate on everything about Tom even though he´s a brilliant actor. I thought Kate was so much better for the character than Maggie.

soto - what are you talking about? not once was I taken out of the movie by Holmes. And you know she was meant remind us that somewhere inside Bruce and her were just the same kids as the ones playing in the beginning of the film. she was meant to have that child like innoncense and sense of right and wrong, that was bruce´s spiritual connection, and how he was able to stay grounded even though he´d lost his innocense. sorry man Holmes was inspired casting and I think did a fine job. and even if she didn´t she was a billinon times better than Gylenhaal. she had no idea who the character was, she played her all sassy and sexy and womanly. she didn´t keep that noble innocense that Kate has. It was bullshit. She really did take me out of the movie. Infact everytime her or Two Face guy were on it really pissed me off, they were so bad and missed cast and it was a completely wasted opportunity. Two Face should have been a split peersonality. where you see him struggling, battling against himself. Not some rich douchy preppy boy with the personality of a wet fish.

Begins is probably the best if you're just watching from a Bat-fan perspective. But Rises is the best film. All 3 are really close for me though.

Great editorial. I agree completely. TDKR was awful and TDK was great until I re-watched it. He fell from the skyscraper and just hit a car, not slowing himself down, not throwing a batarang with a line, to slow Rachael and his descent, just hit it going near terminal velocity, into car. They would've been dead. End of movie. HUGE plot hole. So much I can't really watch it, I don't mind if you bend the laws of physics, just don't completely ignore them. That is why TDK sucks.
TheYoungMan
TheYoungMan - 9/28/2013, 10:54 PM
Anyone who criticizes TDKR for having so-called plot holes but doesn't do the same for TDK or BB just has it out for TDKR for some reason. All 3 movies use the same writing sense. For example, how did Bane know the cops would be in the sewer when he set the bombs off? This a movie convenience, and therefore TDKR is a bad movie, right? Well, BB must also be bad because when Ra's wanted Bruce to kill a guy with a sword, Bruce chose not to do that and instead blew up the entire building, killing that guy anyway plus everyone else there.

What naming plot holes actually means is that you don't know how to critique film drama, and you instead look for superficial things in the plot that may or may not be contradicting in an attempt to invalidate the film. It's a cop-out, basically.

Begins is my favorite CBM, period.

TDK was great, just a hair below Begins.

TDKR was a good movie, but easily the worst of the trilogy. Don't get me wrong I loved it, it's just nowhere even close to the brilliance of the other two.

Batman (89) was very good.

Batman Returns was just OK, but a watchable film nonetheless,

Batman Forever and Batman & Robin were pure trash, there's no debating that.
GuardianDevil
GuardianDevil - 9/29/2013, 12:07 AM
My criticisms of TDKR have nothing to do with plot holes, because every SINGLE CBM has them. But you see, Batman isn't and should never be a quitter. I mean he's Batman for like 2 years and then he retires for 8 years...wth??

I just didn't like it that Batman was portrayed as being a frail, wimpy sort of man and a quitter. That and Bane (one of my all time favorites) turned out to just be a lapdog for some lame chick. Outside of that, great movie.

TDK and BB are damn near perfect movies, only one issue with each and it's the same but different. Both leading females were horrible.

@Theyoungman, Actually it isn't. Bruce didn't kill the man on his principles. He may have inadvertently killed the man but that was not his choice to kill him. The point was Ras was trying to subvert Bruce's will to his own, taking away Bruce's free will. So he fought back. Choosing life which was at the very least his own, considering the man was dead one way or another considering who was holding him.

@soto - what are you talking about? honestly don´t know. Katie Holmes and the rest of the Dawsons Creek actors got harshly judged for being in a teen drama that inspite of all it´s flaws wasn´t a bad TV show. The fact was Katie did exactly what was expected of her and I liked the character as she was and many people agree. Then because some fanboys couldn´t wrap their heads around Joey Ptter being in Batman and it was judge the in thing to hate on her when she´s talented actually talented at what she does, they let her go and replaced her with a woman who was acting more like she was Cat Woman than the actual character she was meant to be portraying. It was bad casting.

Then Two Face, if he people won´t admit that that is one of the worst ever portrayals of a fan fave supervillain ever, then I really have lost touch with this generation. It was just so bland and fake. I watch it and everytime the guy is on screen, I find him unbelievable as Harvey Dent and or Two Face. Evene worse his entire act of super villainy (not the actors fault but still) is shooting a few people and kidnapping the commisionars wife and kid. If they couldn´t handle having two villains they should have just left tham out. They did the same to Scarecrow in Batman Begins, which was worse because Cilllian Murphy stole the show in my opinion in that movie. He was absolutely outstanding. He deserved a showdown with Batman. Possibly even more than Ras. He could have been driving the train even at the end, just something to give him that send off he deserved, instead they just made him a joke in the following two movies.

As for the OP, I think The DK is entertaining and edges Batman begins just a bit because of the electric performance by Heath, but from a film perspective to me Batman Begins is the originator and revolutionizer of the comicbookmovie genre. what if find funny is that people say it was least comicy film and more realistic, but Batman Begins is the closest I´ve seen on screen of a Graphic Novel come to life. Apart from Sin City.

I truly believe that when one talks about the "best" Batman film they are really talking about their personal favorite. But anyways, if I had to choose the "best" Batman film then it would have to be The Dark Knight Rises. That film had a human touch to it that I feel Batman Begins or even The Dark Knight didnt have constantly through out their films. The scenes where Bruce and Alfred are talking about Bruce's mortality, his age and what it means to have a life outside of crime fighting are amazing. The scene where Bruce and Miranda (Talia) have to break into Bruces own house because he's never needed his keys BECAUSE Alfred has always been there. The fight between Batman and Bane (both fights) have a great human touch to them and even when Bruce has to escape the prison is emotional because for the first time Bruce has to deal with his fears, his pain of maybe losing the city he loves the most and he has to deal with his physical loss to Bane as well. I know that fans like the version of Batman that will always win but I just dont like that version. I like a more tortured Batman one that has to actually deal with issues head on and to me that version of Batman was portrayed perfectly in TDKR.

@JJ63 The frail and "wimpy" Bruce/Batman is one of my favorite things in that movie. Makes it 100 times more satisfying when he comes back and wins.

@TheYoungMan is speaking some true shit (apart from frail and weak Bruce)
However, The Dark Knight Rises is not a film about Batman, which is why I would never put it as the best. It's a very well made film that gets way more crap than it deserves, but Batman Begins is a triumph. I agree with your #1.

But on the topic of Mask of the Phantasm:
I don't understand the acclaim this film gets. It's dull. It really is.
I don't love The Dark Knight merely for the Joker (although that's a big reason) but I love it for its sophistication, brilliant foreshadowing, stunning cinematography and its chaotic nature as a crime film.

Don't get me wrong, Batman Begins was great, but it wasn't the best. That award goes to both The Dark Knight and 1989's Batman. The Dark Knight was just so perfectly executed by everyone (especially Heath Ledger). The tone was much darker than Begins and showed us a new side of Batman that nobody expected to see. Tim Burton's Batman was lighter, but still serious. It was fun, but not a kids movie.
Batman Begins was just a bit too slow. There was too much Bruce Wayne and not enough Batman. The message Christopher Nolan was trying to put across was that Bruce Wayne is Batman but Batman is not Bruce Wayne. So why spend so much time focusing on the man rather than what he stands for? Still a fantastic movie though.

1. The Dark Knight Rises - Really don't understand all the hate that this film gets. Plot holes can be explained if they just looked a little deeper, as this is a thinking man's trilogy (kind of like The Godfather trilogy, but with a better finale of course), the only "plot holes" are based off of mistakes that characters make (like Bruce trusting Talia with the clean energy project). As a final cap to the Batman that this series has masterfully developed, I think it's safe for me to say that this is my favourite Batman film of all-time because the more I watch it, the more I love it for how it handles the story and it creates real tension by having the villains on-screen for even longer than Batman and maybe even Bruce Wayne combined. Like Michael Keaton in the original two Batman films from Tim Burton, Bale plays Wayne like a shadow or a ghost, surprising others when he steps onto the scene like you wouldn't expect him to be Bruce Wayne (even joking to Selina Kyle at one point that he's pretending to be "Bruce Wayne, eccentric billionaire"), he speaks more in his expressions this time around than in his words and the scene that sells it is when Blake pays him a visit to let him know about how he knows who he really is ("I've seen that look in your face before"). It's a brilliant scene that gives the film real emotional weight as you can see it in Bale's eyes how he needs to return as Batman, he just needed that extra push. Brilliant writing all-around for this finale, with great references to the original (especially in the crisp cinematography) and the best action out of the entire series make this a classic film that will only get better as you give it time to settle in.

2. Batman (1989)
3. Batman: Sub-Zero
4. Batman Begins
5. The Dark Knight
6. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
7. Batman Returns
8. Batman: The Movie
9. Batman & Robin
10. Batman Forever
